  • Never sold his soul to the industri....U real and a love u

  • sadest song i've ever known

  • what made you choose these two songs? just curious.

  • i've just got to get some of this off my chest, got screwed over recently, everything fell apart and there really wasn't much for me to keep going for. then i remembered tom :). i have no idea how many times i've listened, but every time i do his voice makes me believe in myself a bit more...i'm just another sap commenting but hey thought i might as well.

  • true beauty

  • and i hope that you dont fall in love with me

  • La voce rassomiglia in modo impressionante a quella di Springsteen.. impressionante sul serio..

  • Listen to this, then listen to Hell Broke Luce from the new album. Now there is an artistic journey if I ever heard one! (And it's brilliant the whole way through.)

  • If anyone ever doubted the pure genius of Tom's songwriting, let them listen to this one. Hit's all the right buttons, ticks all the right boxes and rings all the right bells. Tom, I've loved your music for nearly forty years, so God bless you for being there and helping me understand things and people as I was a young man growing up. You and Bruce have inspired me all these years. I've laughed and cried with you and not many artists can do that. Just you, and The Boss.

  • who is the voice that starts at 5:16 ? same guy ?

  • @alexczink yes, that's the way he usually sounds.

  • * * * * *

  • So like this song. So can understand the pain of needing love and being so afraid of it...

  • This is not tom waits.... It is Cookie Monster

  • @powerofpaper cookie monster is his secret identity

  • for you my dear mister.

  • love it...both...together! gives me chills

  • Who hasn't felt instant love?

A certain smile, a twitch of the mouth, a glint in her eye and your heart anchors in your chest.

It's magic when she feels the same way, it's happened to me only once in my whole life. And I married her.

  • @agiambrone Posting a smug comment on this here song ruined it for me. Thanks.

  • @kittycanyon haha stay strong. Someday your prince will come.

  • @agiambrone T _ T

  • @agiambrone You lucky bastard.

  • @agiambrone Not to be overly sentimental, I have been drinking.

But this comment affected me more than a childhood of studying Shakespearean romances and watching classic disney movies.

You brought a tear to my eye sir.

  • ……. A true Poet … for you, Herr Sonntag ~ (•8-D

  • i miss you old Tom

  • Tom takes me away to places.happy sad me him .what can you say. he takes me every outside & down. ...thats when im not inside up :} Thank you tom ;] love and peace.

  • пиздато

  • someone wrote here it could be dylan.to my mind toms charm and genius revolves around the fact that he can not be tied down hes not dylan hes not springsteen or anyone else.its those guys who can only dream thier as good as tom

  • for my girl racheal,,, i love you from dean hall

  • I hoped I wouldn't, I never meant to but you captured something in me and I did..... I love you K K

  • tom waits is a genius.

  • 11 people have no taste

  • whoa to you all...

  • Guys, thank you for the lots of answers, I believed that it's Waits before the first one. I just wanted to express my surprise about strange clear voice, wich is unusual from him. Since the first listening, I realised that it is from the first album, so he was young. Btw the style of the song could be Dylan, I think, but this this one is much more better than any from him. Thanks, once again:) Aspecially the upload:)

  • I thought this song was called "Closing Time"?

  • remember living in malibu around '71 playing tom waits on the stereo and my friend who never heard tom before said "sounds like neil young to me" . i love them both but still can't see any resemblance. well, maybe a pinch. sorta like comparing winwood to mcartney or dylan to springsteen. . .all unique talents in their own right

  • pure

  • Yes he has quite a few voices over time. I believe this was way before he started screaming into a pillow to rough up his voice. Ole 55 was another. then he kinda left me behind. I've been covering his tunes for a long time, the early stuff. My wife

s favorite is sandiago serinade. Don't know what I would have done without Tom, Jesse winchester, John Prine and the eagles. Tom is great.

  • well for first time listener thisis some awsome down to reality writing and his vioce could wake up the angels thank you tom wait

  • Congrats Tom. It's been a real adventure since the days at the Tropicana on Sunset, Ben Franks, the parties on Miranda Street, or The Mermaid in Topanga. Oh and... Keep kicking...

  • Any guy who's ever been in a bar, and been alone, must have a heart that's open to this song.

  • @gyudbal i assure u its tom

  • @Dustalk only an idiot would think Mr. Waits would sound like that zimmerman dude.

  • @tobinlbeach i never said he did?

  • @Dustalk FYI, your statement is not a question...

  • @Sibbycat lol FYI its a sarcastic statement hence the '?'

  • @Dustalk Pure genius

  • @gyudbal one of my favourite tom waits songs... though I see what you mean by the different voice. Sounds more like early Springsteen to me though haha

  • @gyudbal Dylan can't sing anywhere near that well, haha

  • @gyudbal it is "TOM WAITS"... not Dr Waits.. and I'm sure it is him

  • @meski777 Thx for reply, but you must be wrong: he made an incision larynx with a ball pen, he told me in besides a coffee ;)

  • @gyudbal how can anyone mistake Tom Waits for somebody else....you must be deaf or stoned

  • @gyudbal Have you heard Bob Dylan sing before? This does not sound much like Dylan at all.

The only similarity is that they both had raspy voices, and now growl and/or screech into the microphone. Which isn't a bad thing :P

  • Oh Lord, I would be so happy if Tom came to Russia, to Siberia!

I love and respect him. My favorite american singer, he has a very big human heart.

    Great man, great songs!

  • @Captain985 i certainly hope he has a human heart!

  • Not the most talented vocalist of all time but has more feeling in his vocals than any singer ever, a style all his own. My favorite of all time, especially his early stuff

  • @AnEpicNotusedName i disagree...tho i like both artists alot...they both have their own thing going

  • @AnEpicNotusedName not at all

  • And i think i've already fallen in love with her....... damn

  • such a deep harsh singer , capable of such touching , beautiful songs

  • @cloud9savagehenry

yep, u nailed it, what i love about his ballads: it always touches me...

  • 802.11 ieee

  • Tom always makes me feel better when I'm down

  • its a little weird listening to this and then listening to rain dogs and singapore haha

  • two of the most beautiful songs :)

  • my uncle turned me on to tom many years ago...him and john prine, well my uncle since passed but never far from my thoughts when listening to either or...was closing time i 1st heard and was instantly hooked.

by the way...the piano has been drinking seems to not be well recieved in rehab morning excercises...thought it might be at least understood, another memory but i guess just mine.

  • @grafdale1 the piano has been drinking is another really great song lol

  • @grafdale1 tom waits and john prine .... it don't get no better than that. your uncle had great taste in music.

  • I used to listen to this in my basement as a teenager, smoking cigarettes and venting them through the old wood stove, heartbroken at all the girls who I couldn't get the courage to talk to.

  • Easily one of my favorite musicians. I used to do Tom's music in a couple of upscale pubs about 20 years ago. The clientelle was mostly local business owners. They had a variety of classical pianists come and play. I often played classical pieces...but one night I asked if I could do something different just for the hell of it. I played Ruby's Arms and sang just like Tom. The people loved it and frequently asked for it thereafter.

  • if you are listen this song, you are in love mates !

  • @morgoth2689 or we like to be in love !

  • That was lovely :)

  • tom waits is brilliant.. he embraces the character in his music.. voice included.. he truly sings his words and his voice changes in character.. ruff and gritty or soft depending on the story.. experiment of sound.. gotta have balls to "sing" like tom has on occasion.. most singers ego gets in the way long before

plus he is fucking witty as hell.. go watch all his interviews..

  • 7 minutes from Incredibleland...

  • Covered this song last Sun. at the TOB in Alex Bay NY. Everyone loves this song. Mine Fav. is Sandiago Serinade. Tom is incredible. Hope I get to see him in person but he plays mainly overseas.

  • tom waits is an angel

  • To the 10 people who dislike this, have you ever felt!?...anything!

  • This kinda reminds me of james taylor but I like Tom Wait voice on this song love james taylor but Tom Has sounds so weatherd and rich in emotion.

  • These are the perfect songs for anyone whos evert lived a live in any adventure.Talesboth happy & sad told in a simple unjudgemental tone. This man is truely one of only five true artists to emerge in the 20th century(the other four being Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Elvis Costello & Lou Reed)

  • a 10

  • I am so in love with this song!

  • This version of "I Hope I don't Fall in Love with you" sounds different to the one on Closing Time.

The guitar is a lot softer and so is his voice, I prefer this one. I can't find it anywhere. :S

  • an interesting juxtaposition of old and new ish Tom, delightful, both of them. Thank you from the Sinai desert

  • The funniest thing ever would be Bon jovi trying to cover no one knows im gone...!

Lol that would be a sight !..

  • Bon Jovi's version?? that's the biggest joke I have ever heard Tom Waits delivery of

the song makes it what it is a great song

  • NO. Bad Sebastian for showing me this! Tsk tsk, he knows I'm not a huge country person. =3

  • So Bob Dylan :o)

  • simple and great

  • @A1leejack Would be nice, but I'm from Germany ...

  • @1hungrigerHugo1 wtf i've heard the version and omg that song sucks omfg

  • @1hungrigerHugo1 It doesn't even come close to Tom's version.

  • @1hungrigerHugo1 wow. your stupid.

  • @muzicsalesman oh god :D... I just said I like the other one more!

  • @1hungrigerHugo1 haha. im just being a classic youtube ass. you can have your own opinion :) lol

  • @raphael19801

im sorry but you're 100% wrong lol

  • This sounds just like Springsteen.

  • @zacandtaylorrule

both tom waits and springsteen released their debut albums in 1973 i believe...tho i prefer waits over springsteen by far

  • @Dustalk Oh okay. I was just a little surprised because normally Tom doesw not sound like Springsteen. He has a completely differrent voice.

  • @zacandtaylorrule

yea that was recorded long before the years and years of alcohol and cigarettes lol

  • @Dustalk Haha. Yeah I can tell.

  • thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i just love his voice, it's so different and breath-taking <3

  • what's the name of the song after the one mentioned in the title????

  • @condurachesorin

both song names are mentioned in the title :)

  • If this was played all over the world, non stop, the world would be such a greater place :) gives me shivers to think that a human being with so much sould and love could create such beautiful sounds. 1000000000000000000000000000Stars ! ! !

  • the word beautiful just doesn't do it justice! songs like these make you feel, well I don't know but! you can just sink into these shoes and just feel it! like the the top comment says, live long Tom!...you put us other songwriters to shame! Hats of to Tom Waits! 8) xx

  • I listen to alot of metal like trivium but tom just takes the cake

some say you cant kill the metal well .... tom just did ;D

  • Calling out for me?

  • Great song, thanks!

  • Seriously, what the hell. This sounds so different from his other stuff. Does this guy have like 5 personalities/voices in one body?

  • @TiniNormi no 7 actually

  • @TiniNormi I think it's call genius.....

  • @TiniNormi idiot... he has been around for a very very long time... this is from some 30 years ago when his voice was more tempered

  • @venturecrew06 Uh, right, being around for a long time totally explains why his singing can vary IN THE SAME ALBUM. Can't have anything to do with vocal range...

  • I hope I don't fall in love with you, I think that I just fell in love with you.. (in the guy who introduced me to mr. Waits here.. )

  • Tom is da man! :]

  • beautiful and tragic

  • 6:07 wtf?

  • not originally by marc cohn, dude. waits wrote this.

  • when I listened to "Bone Machine" presentation on Italian Radio, I was upsetted and without words... I listened to "Night On Hearth"... I doi not know too much of Tom Waits... but my suspect is that the so strong intensity of his Music has stopped me... I hope to go accross, thanks Tom

  • Hey wheres the two transformers we let you borrow when you played at the circus in stockholm love the music but you owe me 3600 SEK

  • So fine;

Thanks for posting for us all !

  • Not Dylan, not springsteen, it's originally by Marc Cohn

  • Dear Tom, so many days I felt that music saved the day, BUT...your songs were the saving grace of a life-time...thank you.

  • This has Bob Dylan written all over it!!

  • no, it sounds more like bruce springsteens little brother wayne, he was huge in nagasaki, but didn't make a dent in the states.

  • yes mate ur a fool lol

    good music though

  • I fell in love with you, Tom :-)

  • TW - the man is a musical genius - and a great live performer & entertainer.

  • che pezzo meraviglioso....

  • Wow! I have a different version of this song if anyone is interested. I have the faster version from the album the early years. I like it a bit better than this slower one and no he doesn't sound like Springsteen. He sounds like Tom Waits. & I agree with @dunkafelic. His music has inspired me and helped me get through the struggles I'm dealing with. He's a great influence.

  • there's never going to be someone like Tom Waits

  • absolutely best song ever written

  • Great songs... thank you for sharing them...

  • wow, the first song got me sooooo mellow and then the second one started and it scared the shiz outta me.

  • this is a great song

  • thank God for music like this. it's the reason I'm still alive.

  • @dunkafelic THAT was the best comment ever written anywhere, by anyone for anything. dunkafelic - you said it all in a dozen words. Good one.

  • are you being a smartass? lol thanks. a bit of an exaggeration maybe, but I appreciate it.

  • No - I'm not being a smartass. That's the way I feel about some kinds of music too. That's all. Look - you got 16 thumbs ups for that comment.

  • @dunkafelic well-said!!!

  • @dunkafelic that's fucking cheesy, man. hahaha

  • @tchago you can think that if you want, but it's not necessary to say it in a comment. I'm not the one who beat you up every day at school.

  • @dunkafelic I here you man,but isnt this one very sad fact

  • @nikolai841 depends on how you look at it I guess. gorgeous music like this keeps the soul going when your heart may feel ready to give up. makes you wanna carry on, even amidst all of society's ugliness. it gives you hope, and shows that purity still exists in the world. it's genuine.

  • @dunkafelic you are right man,but I am just a bit angry thath all the real things are sad

  • I LOVE THIS SONG :o)

  • I'd like to hear "No One Knows I'm Gone" during a movie sequence where a main character is out-gunned and then shot down e.g. the set-up in The Godfather or in Bonnie and Clyde.

  • i love this song so much

  • I first heard this song, on the film 'The Prince and Me' - Where she was dancing bare foot to it in the college cafe. I loved that scene a lot :D

  • @AlwaysHisSweetheart same here great scene

  • Comment removed

  • Where can I find this version of this song? The one on Itunes has a lot more production added to it. I like the unplugged version you have here.

  • There are two CD called Tom Waits the early years vol 1 and two. They have the original versions of songs that like this were on Closing Time but also have songs that do not appear elsewhere. Most songs are just Tom singing and playing piano or guitar. There is great stuff on both volumes, if you like this buy them both you will not be disappointed!

  • hör das am liebsten mit meeinem freund marky...

  • LOVE.

    -tm

  • Fantastic.

  • beautiful

  • This is his best song. (I hope...)
