I'm glad I got to see the Safeway in Inverness when I went over in 2003.

I remember the Safeways on Shambles Square in Manchester. It was mighty handy for groceries on the way home from where I used to work... then, after the IRA bomb in 1996, it disappeared like the rest of my favourite haunts that made working in town worth the long journey in on the bus.

I remember when safeway opened in livingston scotland in 1981 it was a fantastic shop very American or should i say canadian,my mother was never out of it dad too pecan pie betty crocker the memories.On the day of the royal wedding we had trays of cold meats and fancy cheeses delivered the day before such luxury.

I worked at the stratford on avon store and hated it. They sent in mystery shoppers to deliberately wind up the staff to get a reaction then discipline you !

Also I got into trouble for accepting a 50p tip from a (mystery) customer after pushing her shopping trolley to her car through snow and ice covered streets.

Key Markets on the other hand were fantastic to work for but were sadly bought out by Gateway who ruined the stores.

Yes there was a Safeway store in Plymouth Milton Keynes, Northampton and Nottingham I think

a bit of my childhood died with safeway when it became morrisons :( lets hope everyone does the same as me and refuses to call it morrisons and keep on calling it Safeway to make then change the name lol

I loved working at Safeway, 13 years from bag packer to store manager. Left in 1995 to run my own business but nothing but happy memories there. Now got Morrisons next to my house........................i­t's awful.

Safeway US sold off their UK stores to Argyll Group PLC in 1987 and gradually converted the Presto stores to the Safeway format. Morrisons are rank, and their food is lower quality than Safeway was. The Market Street format is a gimmick. Yes, Morrisons produce their own food,because it costs them less and they are less fussy about hygeine and quality in their factories like farmers boy and neerock. I knew someone who worked there.

I don't know about the US or the UK but here in Canada we still have Safeway and the slogan is "Safeway...Ingredients for life." I wonder why they left the UK. I know that only western Canada have Safeway. I think it's called 'Dominion' in Ontario and the Maritimes. I'm sure Quebec has their own thing. The store is probably called SCREW CANADA AND IT'S DAMN ENGLISH STORES , lol. No, it's probably called GIVE US MORE MONEY FROM OTTAWA WHILE WE WHINE AND BITCH ABOUT HAVING THE QUEEN'S PIC ON IT!

This Safeway jingle actually dated from the late 1970's and was also used in the US and Canada. It was retired in North America when the "Ribbon S" logo was introduced. They did use a modifed slogan without the jingle. It said, "Today's Safeway, where you get a little bit more". Seems like Safeway UK used it longer and with the "Ribbon S" logo! Good memories with that jingle!

Yes the anniesland one was the best ever. I live just round the corner. Morrisons is terrible. Apart for the roll n sausage you can get from the restaurant.

At 0.31, That was the Safeway Megastore in Anniesland, Glasgow. Now Morrisons.

And it isn't the same now. Safeway is sooo much better than Morrisons.

At 0.06 that's the Safeway at Muirend, Glasgow. It became a Somerfield after the Safeway sale and is now a Sainsburys

It's a shame Safeways went. There's less competition on the market now. Soon there will be even less now that Summerfields has been taken over by the co op.

I worked for seven years in my local Safeway here in Airdrie, Scotland (Customer Services Asst in the Deli Dept). This jingle was slightly before my time, but still brings back many great memories. My old store is now a Morrisons. No offence to them, but it's just not the same. Great post - thanks! :)

Yes it is, or was. Safeway no longer exists in the UK. Safeway Stores, Inc set up Safeway Food Stores Ltd in London in 1962.

@TheMeakers Sold off by KKR (who'd acquired Safeway) to Argyll plc in the 80s. They renamed themselves Safeway plc and the rest is history.

It was until 1986 when Argyll Stores bought Safeway UK. Argyll converted all their large Presto stores to the Safeway format. In my opinion, the company failed due to incompetent management at Hayes after the departure of Sir Alistair Grant.

They should never have changed the smaller Presto shops into Safeway. Now we all work for Morrisons and pine for the good old days.

Yes, and in Australia, the remaining Safeways (in Victoria) are now gradually being converted to the Woolworths brand! (No relation to the dead British firm)

Great stuff. The company name was legendry. A Great company to work for and had many years within it. It was better in the days of american ownership. A tragic day when Morrisons bought it and finally the Safeway name vanished for ever. Also that jingle dates back to about 1981 1982. Ex Transport Department Employee Aylesford Kent.
