when the hero's in hell , you'd better get ready for pain ! i think linda rondstadt has shared this moving melody , too ... though will have to check it out , eh ! johannes de la tour digne - be well !
To MeyerLansky78-I also have some strange attraction to this song and I was strung on heroin for 30 yrs. But....that is not why I love this song. i think it's that's it's real life and gritty! But to your question. The only place to go once the scripts stop, is to the streets or to the methodone clinic. Life is not always fair. P.S. I am clean now for 15 yrs.Hugs and good wishes to you.
I can't stop listening to this song and I never and have no will to do Heroin. But, it is anthem for those with other addictions like H. i.e. painkillers. I have been there and the withdrawls are torture especially having been in a bad auto accident and have to take them to survive the pain. After the dr's stop writing scripts, what are you supposed to do? Withdrawl or hit the streets. I'll let you all decide what happens next.
@sandynapier healing is possible without god. I'm an atheist and I've been of heroin for about 7 years. Some make-believe man in the sky won't get you clean.
@jacksonshredder18 and all others who think GG allin's cover was better....SUCK MY ECLECTIC DICK!!!!!!...GG allin was savage as fuck. love him RIP...i was at GG's last "suicide show", saw that fucker ran naked through the streets after puttin his boot to a fans face.....but ppl can cover zevon just about as good as they cover bob dylan (not a complement), save for hendrix's and eagles of death metal cover......
@BUZZUBUZZU I beg to differ!!! Those are great covers, but nowhere near the originals!!! The voice of Mr. Cohen and the feeling we can hear in this version from Mr. Z cannot be compared. But, I repeat, those are GREAT covers
what album is this on? is it really warren zevon because the other version i heard sounds completely different and has different lyrics. its also about 2 minutes shorter.
@maziku It's from a posthumous double CD that Warren's son Jordin put out a few years ago. It was called Preludes: Rare and Unreleased Recordings. it has some fantastic demo versions of this and other songs. you'll love it!
its funny im actually smoking black heroin as i type this and i love hearing dwight yoakams version, it just so west coast and you got that hopeless desert music and it speaks to me Ive been trying to stay clean and im so tired of pawning shit.

There seems to be some serious confusion in this comment section, and as a very dedicated Zevon fan, I would like to offer some corrections. The track loaded above is indeed Zevon, though some of you may think it sounds different vocally. This version was released in 2007 on his PRELUDES album (track 12). The album is a collection of previously unreleased recordings, some brand new songs and some alternate versions (like this one.) I hope this helps! This is CERTAINLY our good man Warren.
@JacksonShredder18 absolutely!! better than zevon in my own opinion. i give most credit though to zevon for writing it, obviously. i love zevon seperately and equally to g.g.
@JacksonShredder18 dwights version + everyother version covered by hundreds of others r good as well...GG"s was pretty damn good bc it came from his heart...lol bc coming off of junk is no fun
@JacksonShredder18 Why? Because he almost got through it without messing up the lyrics? I guess that is good for Allin. Otherwise his version is nothing.
The lyrics ARE wrong. Warren Zevon originally wrote the song as "I pawned my Smith CORONA," not Smith & Wesson. The guy in the song is an anguished writer in Echo Park, an artists colony in earlier L.A., who had to pawn his typewriter - a Smith Corona - not a handgun. It's the typewriter, his only means of communicating his art, that he loses in the process. That is the whole point of the original song, he is a tormented artist with a typewriter, not some junkie with a handgun.
Ok, you MIGHT be able to get away with calling Warren a folk singer, but COUNTRY??? HELL NO was warren zevon a country singer! He is classic rock all the way!
This could definitely be considered a country song, just not a "Nashville" song. Contemporary country is, aside from fucking awful, much different from country a few decades ago.

I've lost family and friends to heroin, and slowly I'm losing a good friend, who will probably be dead soon. I wish I could believe people when they say they're clean, but I have two brothers and a sister that are dead, and a memory in the back of my mind of all the promises I heard about quitting dope after each sibling died. So many good people have been taken by dope, and I know no-one made them junkies, but I wish all those people were here now.
