I can't stop listening to this song and I never and have no will to do Heroin. But, it is anthem for those with other addictions like H. i.e. painkillers. I have been there and the withdrawls are torture especially having been in a bad auto accident and have to take them to survive the pain. After the dr's stop writing scripts, what are you supposed to do? Withdrawl or hit the streets. I'll let you all decide what happens next.

The track loaded above is indeed Zevon, though some of you may think it sounds different vocally. This version was released in 2007 on his PRELUDES album (track 12). The album is a collection of previously unreleased recordings, some brand new songs and some alternate versions (like this one.) I hope this helps! This is CERTAINLY our good man Warren.

The lyrics ARE wrong. Warren Zevon originally wrote the song as "I pawned my Smith CORONA," not Smith & Wesson. The guy in the song is an anguished writer in Echo Park, an artists colony in earlier L.A., who had to pawn his typewriter - a Smith Corona - not a handgun. It's the typewriter, his only means of communicating his art, that he loses in the process. That is the whole point of the original song, he is a tormented artist with a typewriter, not some junkie with a handgun.
