This is hard to watch. Did any of these people receive settlements from the MTA? Also, how did everyone seem to keep so calm? I'm amazed by everyones composure.
I'm curious, having never been trapped in a elevator, but need a ton of movie where people get out. After the first hour, what was no one trying to pry the door open, or go through the roof? That would be my first response "IF" it was obvious that people inside were hot and experiencing discomfort.
I am personally not afraid of elevators but the lesson here is to not take elevators in subway stations in NYC...and several other cities. those elevators are not trust worthy
I commend the good people in the elevator for remaining so calm in such a claustrophobic situation. Big ups to Washington Heights. 181 and 168 st stations are a mother- be careful!
First of all, every building has stairs. No exceptions. That has to do with the fire code. So saying that this building has no stairs is ridiculous. Sure, you may be discouraged from using them because they are meant for emergencies only, but every building is lenient on allowing emergency stairwell use. However, they are not lenient with impatient people who do not want to wait, such as 28 idiots who will overoccupy an elevator.
@tjmarshal Have you been to 181st st station or are you just retarded?
It is not a"building" it is an underground structure built 12 STORIES underground in 1906. The only stairs are narrow and steep EMERGENCY affairs hidden behind emergency doors and not designed for regular use.
@tjmarshal YES THE STATION HAS STAIRS BUT NOT FOR USE UNLESS AN EVACUATION...U DON'T KNOW HOW HOT IT IS DOWN THERE & SOMETIMES YOU JUST WANNA GET OUT OF THERE AS SOON AS YOU CAN. I DON'T THINK IT WAS AN OVER WEIGHT ISSUE SINCE THE ELEVATORS ARE ALWAYS PACKED DURING RUSH HOURS & IT HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. SO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU START CALLING ANYONE AN IDIOT...MAYBE YOU ARE'T FROM THE AREA AND DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS.
I rode that elevator on a school trip and since then I dont take that elevator I just get off at another stop and walk. It's too hot in there and I know I would not be able to take getting stuck in that elevator.I dont take the elevator at 168th street either, no way.
Everyone keeps saying to take the stairs...but believe me, I live in the area and I've been in that station hundreds of times, there are no stairs/escalators there (at least not on the 1-line). Those elevators are your only choice of getting up to the upper platform, where the stairs are to the street.
not a fan of messing with elevators in the subway. for real. i knew it had to be one of those elevators on the 1 line. i thought it was the one at 168th street.
Glad everyone was ok. Well done FDNY - go to rallies and support them as the Mayor continues to want to shut down fire halls and lay off firefighters.
Elevator #108, right? About 20 of us got stuck in there on 3/31/2011 for around 15 minutes.
Unfortunately, the elevators are just the beginning of what's wrong with this substandard station. Since bricks fell from the ceiling almost 2 years ago, they've had this ridiculous scaffolding up over the southern half of the platforms, making them half as wide as they should be, and we know how crowded that station can get. Another fine example of why the MTA needs to be overhauled from the top down.
They said no one was taken to the hospital..but thats a lie..it was a horrible experience and that little girl is traumatized....but hey look at where we live..they don't care..that station is hell..it collapsed a few years back and still has not been fully repaired!
I hate the MTA! I remember during the blizzard, the station at Jay street fucked up because the wires were burned! I hope this decrepit system crumbles & burns to smithereens! >:[
@pandaSmore It is a very deep station and there are no stairs accessible to the general public at that location. Elevators are the only way in or out of that station. The station is 180 feet below street level.
Ever think that perhaps it did not take an hour for firefighters to arrive? Perhaps, it took sometime to secure the elevator to prevent further movement and ensure the safety of the passengers and the firefighters. Being a firefighter myself, and being trained in elevator rescue, I know that it can take sometime before it is safe to operate on top of or around a stuck occupied elevator. Before people bitch about the time, think about what is needs to be done before the people can be rescued.
An hour for the firefighters/police to come? If this had a happened on the Park Avenue line in the Upper East in the Mayor's neighborhood, probably would have taken five minutes.
i'm not surprised that elevator and the one on 168th are HORRIBLE and have been so for over 30 years. the mta doesn't care about it either because they're in Washington Heights
@JRLOC488 stairs are not ever available to use at that station unless it's an emergency. i've been there tons of times and passengers have to ALWAYS take the elevator.
@JRLOC488 the stairs are for emergency only. if you don't believe it then go to the station and see for yourself. or listen to the people that live there and have been in the station who are telling you here.
@75ladyoscar Nope there is stairs but used for personals only. There is no stairs to the public becuz this IRT Station is deeeeeeeeeeep underground just like 191st / 168th..
Those Elevators on the IRT Broadway Line at 181st / 191st / 168th sometimes freak me out when im inside them.. HVACs should be added tho..
@stran212 i agree with you for the most part only problem is MTA says no elevators at either station however this could be 181 Aline doubt it though or 168 street
@tommyh106 MAYBE U AIN'T FROM WASHINGTON HEIGHTS...THERE ARE NO STAIRS TO GO UP UNLESS THERE IS A BIG EMERGENCY & THE STATION HAS 2 BE EVACUATED!!! I FEEL BAD THEY WERE STUCK 2 BEGIN WITH IN THE FIRST PLACE & I UNDERSTAND THE FIRE FIGHTERS POINT ALSO. THE FIRE HOUSE IS ONLY 2 AVENUES DOWN. SO I FEEL THAT THEY RESPONDED AS FAST AS THEY COULD & DEALT WITH THE SITUATION PROPERLY.
Those elevator needs upgraded with air condition normally...

I thank the firefighters, they were fantastic! I know that they arrived earlier, but we were still locked up in a bad situation!

it's not their fault, but we were scared!
