  • navajo pima camanche blackfoot or white black yellow orange and even pink we should all respect AND honor all people who fought and died and fought and lived for this great country even those who choose to rebel against it. shes been through hell and back again and will many more times but you can't break her spirit!!!!

  • I am a former Marine A Gny/Sgt and Charles Lindburg was there

  • he is beautiful and fought for this country to be treated like shit by the us.go to hell anyone who has anything bad about him he wanted to go back to a time when his people were free thanks to europen trash you destroyed his way of life he was a great hero

  • I meet Charles Lindberg, he was a Marine that was the first to raise the flag on that costly island. Check it out. Silver Star. Ira was on the second raised.

  • @pnovak69 Baloney Charles Lindberg was NO WHERE near that flag raising who are you trying to kid.

  • Im not even American...And even I see him as a national treasure!!! Fuck anyone that thinks different! ( Much love from your allys....Brothers in arms...ENGLAND )

  • U no people judge us native americans but as people we r strong. Were tought to respect each other n race. But truth b told without da natives (navajo). We wuldnt have won da war. If it wasent for da languange dat war wuldve been lost.

  • @reppd505THATS THE TRUTH WE WOULD BE SPEAKING JAPNESE NICE TO KNOW

  • @reppd505 sorry but thats not a statement that can really be made, thats a little much to say, i greatly respect the work done in ww2 by natives, but we would have won without them, its not a matter of respect me saying this, just a clarity

  • @littlesongbird. We say Black or African American

  • 3 people need their ass kicked. Respond, and give me your address.

  • Haters: Shut up. Ira was an American Hero. He lived through more hell, than most of us who have never had to grab a weapon and fight can ever imagine. Indian. White. Black, WHATEVER. Ira was a MARINE. That alone makes him special. That he couldn't adjust to the post-war world is our fault. We had no plan to help the men who had what we would now call PTSD. Then they called it "Combat Fatigue." There was no treatment plan. Rest Easy Ira. You are remembered.

  • i'm sorry i said indian in my previous comment. they are called native americans.

  • What a wonderful man. standing up for a country that crapped on his people. we are lucky he didnt act like the white man.....he would of shot everybody in his own battalion. indians good whitey bad

  • @gipper086 We prefer to be called Native American or by our tribes name please.

  • @littlesongbird1 i'm sorry. you are right, i won't do that again. i'm also sorry for the way you and your people have been treated.

  • @gipper086 It's cool. It's not like it's meant to be an insult if you call one of us Indian (ie like when people use the "n" word which I HATE!). And yes, it was sad what happened to us but if you look at history, almost ever group of people has been treated badly at one point or another in history.

  • @littlesongbird1 YOUR JUST STUPID

  • @lovedlakoda It's you're not your.

  • @littlesongbird1 .............What the matter with Indians?

  • @dover357 I and many other people find that term to be a bit ignorant and out dated.

Do we still say Negroes or colored people? (I apologize if saying that offends anyone).

  • Not Boot

  • he's a war hero

  • 2 Dislikes are you serious? 2 Dislikes. what in the heck are people doing disliking the song if you don't like it or it's message don't listen to it. I'll stop now it just makes me mad I guess.

  • This man Ira Hayes must be honored and remembered as America's biggest war hero on this Memorial Day holiday.

  • Great to see the name of Ira Hayes on a memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol in Phoenix, Arizona

  • Semper Fi Ira Hayes

  • Thanks to all veterans! God bless Ira Hayes and all who fought the fascists!

  • This song is about the irony in our (native) community, in which the descendants of the anglo american (U.S.) army's targets, join the ranks of the occupier's army and assist in the descendants that benefitted from the injustice our (native) ancestors endured, to oppress yet another indigenous community, the one line that sticks with me the most is that Ira "forgot the white man's greed", some rather die like Luis Oacpicagigua, tha Ira.

  • @meztikall It is a true story about a man,a hero who braved the black sands of Iwo Jima and the horrors of war;not some abstract concept of irony or a distant story told through song. You,sir, should and ought to hold you toungue,as you are obviously speaking out of ignorance. Furthermore, you strike me as someone so assured in your own perceived itellectual abilities, that you equate this song with hatred, racism, and bigotry. Indeed, you never seem to be grateful for the sacrifices these men endured.

  • "a hero"is Goyathalay, Hatuey, Big Foot@Wounded Knee, Tupac Amaru, Shaka, etc. all targets of anglo expansion. "hold (my) tongue"?, I'd rather die! "speaking out of ignorance", I am actually acknowledging the blinded treachery by those who help the parasites who target us, Ira Hayes and me. "hatred, racism, and bigotry" is what the anglos practice, by systematically killing Ira's people. I can only be "grateful for the sacrifices - endured" by those who resist injustice.

  • @meztikall Clinging to your own ill-conceived notions will do nothing to heal anyones wounds. May you one day rid yourself of your own blinding hatred and ignorance.

  • Comment removed

  • @meztikall What you fail to realize, sir, is that like Ira, I too was a Marine. All marines past, present, and future share an indescribeable bond. This bond transcends race, creed, religion, etc. I am certain the concept of this is incomprehensible to a person of your ilk, and it is tragedy, indeed that you likely never will.

  • @3521mtma - r ur comments supposed 2 make me think like u? or r they supposed 2 make me thankful 4 the injustice Ira faced? r they supposed 2 make me forget "the white man's greed"? Hatred is not in my nature, but mistrust is. Racism is taking my power (I don't have any) 2 adversely affect someone else based on their race. Bigotry is a violent act towards another based on their ethnicity, I'm not a violent person, Ira was violent in Iwo Jima though, at no benefit 2 him, IRONIC n SHAMEFUL!!!

  • I can describe the bond, all marines kill 4 the benefit of the privileged of this stolen land!!! The people of my ilk are the targets of the marines, and 1 of the many tragedies is the fact that marines r classist who uphold a code of silence in regards 2 the crimes they commit. There is no blood on my hands, and my concience is free of atrocities. I realize that u would kill people who don't think like u and that u feel a need to continue this exchange. Have the last say, promote death.

  • @meztikal Fuck you sir.Fuck you very much.

  • "clinging 2 - ill-conceived notions - do nothing 2 heal anyones wounds" - based on my experience with "the white man's greed", I'd be naive 2 not have a healthy mistrust of such people, as well as traitors within my community, look at how well Ira's wounds healed. "May you 1 day rid yourself of ur own blinding hatred and ignorance" - Love is what fuels me 2 speak my mind, the basis of this copycat constitution, which is meant for extremist right wing anglos only, and not people like myself.

  • When I clicked into this I presumed they were talking about IRA, as in the Irish Republican Army.. pity

  • as a marine who served in vietnam, i have all the respect for ira hayes.........if you've ever been in war, you can't help but wonder how any of these warriors survived..........they delt with it in their own ways, some very sad........God Bless all service personell

  • @crownanginger3 semper fidelis

  • How could anyone dislike this video? There's not enough words to express what we owe to the veterans of WWII. If it weren't for them we'd all be speakin German or Japanese now.

  • thank you ira hayes. from all the pima people

  • Peter La Farge wrote it.

  • I wondered why no one wrote song about his best friend got killed helping putting up the flag.long shot 11

  • HE'S A REAL HERO, NOT THESE CRY BABIES TODAY

  • thats my friends cousin!

  • Ira hayes, A real true america HERO

  • Ira Hayes, VietNam vet, OIF vet, they all come back the same. We spend about $350,000 to turn each of them into a fighting maching with honed survival instincts and a capacity to do or die. The we bring them home to a place where Congress won't even fund one VA doctor for every 3,000 vets and demand that they "act normal". When they don't, we put them in jail.

What the hell kind of country have we turned into?

  • God bless Ira Hayes and his love for God, Country and Corps.

  • WHY DID YOU PAINT OVVER HIS GRAVE MARKER WITH THE O.I.F.? THATS TOTAL DISSRESPECT TO HIS TOUR OF DUTY.

  • War is a drug. Abuse it and you'll be dead. War will mess you up for the rest of your life. Rest in Peace everybody that gave their lives for this country.

  • ira hayes a hero , a legend you should remember well, rest in peace

  • a true native american hero and don't you people forget it! he fought for our freedom and his people and ours threw him by the wayside. we seem to do that a lot to our hero's of war !

  • for combat Vets they only good sleep they get is the sleep of death.

  • Wow so much arguing about this Classic Song,

only one thing to remember We Are All Americans

  • pauvre ira hayes .

  • Reyes

  • What a legend Ira is.

  • it's simple

    unlike Ira

I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE WHITE MAN"S GREED!!!

  • @meztikall huh?

  • see here is what your problem is

the only people that matter to you

are the ones within your demographic

and the ones within mine that forget your greed

in short Hatuey's words to some spanish religious nut were

I rather burn in hell than to convert in order to go to heaven with my enemy,

I did not check out any of the videos you sent me as you are trying to convert me,

my healthy mistrust of anglos bothers you to the core

which causes you to reply to my comments

  • Tell me Chaplain, do you know Hatuey's most famous quote?

  • If you are not working to bring justice for Native communities and other disenfranchised peoples, then your words are empty and your comment is simply reactionary, and you are on the side of the tirants that killed Ira's spirit long before the physical death.

You can "just happen to be an anglo who is deeply thankful for this man's service to this great country", but that is all you are, still benefitting from Ira's loss of resources, land and life. I TRUST NO ANGLO, I REMEMBER YOUR GREED!!!

  • If you truly are 'thankful for this man's service to this 'great' country" then you have made contact with people in the Pima community to bring about justice for them, right?

Ira forgot the white man's greed,

thus Johnny points it out so that the future generations do not. greed = parasite! It's like the meaning of the song and Ira's life is romanticized but will never be understood to simple minded people who react to Native mistrust of anglos.

  • Ira Hayes was a true hero

  • Look, im a scottish soldier who has fought, tought and trained hard in america for a number of years now - and i will say that whilst the white american chavies we have fought with have been nothing short of superb the so called 'native' amercan chaps we have moved with have been totaly outstanding, unbelievable.

  • We've taken these guys back to teach our boys, their techniques are second to none and have changed some of our long established systems of operation and routine. We owe our spirit to this kind of man.

  • I do not know what your experience is, but in my world I constantly see anglos, taking natural resources, taking brown (from darkest to lightest) lives, sometimes using brute force and , other times using deceipt, none the less the means lead to the same end, we loose our birthright to a few Un Scrupulous Anglos, now the question for all who read this is, are you working to change the tide?
  • Hope Ira got the Medal of Honour. He really deserved that!

  • Finally People on here that actually make some sense!!!!!!!!

  • I would hope that if we as Americans truly wanted to honor our vets we would study up on the people we elect before we try to put them in office and make sure they reconize our Creator God and the U S Constitution to which they swear an oath to support and abide by.

  • AMEN! thats the best statement i've heard in a while! Thanks!

  • i agree night train

  • An awesome and just song. I live in Winnipeg, Canada, and I "know the Indians for what they is", and I don't idealize them the way some people might. But I will say this: they are probably, like Ira Hayes, the best and most reliable and loyal soldiers there are.

  • Umm what exactly "is we" then?

  • Savage Song. Some man was IRA.

  • Great song, whoever defaced his grave marker with OIF is a real piece of shit, it doesn't make a damn like of sense, IWO JIMA saw more casualties in a month than the whole fucking Iraq war! How could you write over his grave with that!?

Please let me know why you are an idiot.

    CPL Shellabarger

    USMC

  • The defacing of Ira's gravestone is horrible, thanks to those keeping it clean.

  • I think that's the point, isn't it? That it's all a bunch of horrible crap that we're forced to deal with by a load of nameless assholes: Iwo Jima, OIF, everything. You can't be left alone, you can't do good. Why? A nameless mass of assholes will just come around and ruin it.

Your outrage, it was occasioned by the author. Enjoy it CPL.

  • WTF????? when where???

    K 3/11

  • @BoyishlyCuteBritYank

Don't let that 155 blow up in your face. We need it. K 3/11 -- good outfit.

    SF

  • CPL, we have a nation of punks and cowards. Quicker to pull out a gun than to take an ass kicking. Round up all these spineless little punk ass, nutless, dickless, foodstamp/welfare collecting little fuckweeds and put them out on the front line as decoys, WITHOUT ANY WEAPONS! And if any of them make it, send them back to the jungles of africa!!

  • couldn't agree more my friend! good comment! they are scourges on our GREAT NATION!

  • W3QJ, There would not be so many punks and cowards if it had not been for racist cowards like you who contribute to the disenfranchisement of people from poor communities thanks to your support for social apartheid and supporting an economic system that down presses many for the benefit of the few.

  • whoa whoa whoa blacks? thats funny to say because i bet your white its your fault we have so man problems in our nation

  • The war raged on for that Marine, he wanted to be a soldier, not a hero, I hope he received the peace that he so deserved. So many Marines went down on that island, haunts the minds of those who made it off. Dads neighbor was wounded there, shot in the neck, is well into his 80's now, quiet and keeps to hisself.

  • I can not listen to this and not shed a tear. Thank you John Cash for telling the story even in death.

  • Sad story have known it most of my life. I really admire Ira Hayes and wish I could have met him. I have agreat dream to one day go to Iwo Jima and climb that same hill. Thanks vets you are not forgotten, sorry somefolks don't appriciate you. I am eternally greatful for all the men and women who have sacrificed so much so I can be free. God bless you one and all

  • Great lyrics!

  • SEMPER FI MARINE.

  • Rest in peace Ira!

  • i think ira truly mastered courage, humility and forgiveness...and i wish i could be more like hin....

  • heck yah god bless ira and his people

  • He was honorable enough to service our country, so give the man the respect he deserves. Sometimes war causes people abuse alcohol, and drugs. Don't be a critic until you've walked in their shoes. God Bless Ira Hayes!!!!!!!!!

  • @connies3699 Roger that. Till you walk a mile in his shoes....It was a Very different time and place. They were called " The Greatest Generation." Because they were all different from us ...stronger, a harder work ethic...but still as weak as us...they were doing something that Changed this work for all of us. KEPT us free...so who ever doesn't like that...join and SERVE ...Pick up a rifle and stand a watch. If not shut the fuck up, Some one else will kick in your share.

  • @connies3699 I had an uncle who landed at Omaha Beech and fought in the Battle of the Buldge. My dad said that his brother left as a happy go lucky kid at the age of 18. He never recovered from the war, he killed himself at 46.

  • @connies3699 my hubby is a shawnee Indian and seved a marine chopper piolot a very proud people we need to give them all honor for what they did

  • @connies3699 Agreed. My dad said the movie Flags of our Fathers addresses how the soldiers were being used more as a policital tool and not given treatment for things like PTSD which can be very tough.

  • My friend Wild Bill says--

    Semper fi, Ira Hayes.

That old Marine plays your song all the time, scratches and all.

    Semper fi, Ira Hayes.

  • America owes alot to native americans they would have been totally knackered

d in the wars without the skills of native americans. And thats from a Brit

  • im pima!.

    you racist people

people stop talkn stuff bou ira!

  • It is sad Ira died drunk in a ditch, but saying he should have been saved through preaching and repentance is an insult to his tribe and his heritage in my opinion. I'm not sure if you meant any harm in it, but if you knew his life and his troubles, you'd see Johnny Cash gave him a nearly perfect tribute. Watch Flags of Our Fathers to see what I mean

  • Comment removed

  • PTSD,...could that be a possibility, regret , how a bout shame,

what man does to man out of war,is no gods work you ignorant fucktarded dickshit fuck you and repent this

and the fact that you miserable pukes cant get past his drink, is a testiment that you are all a bunch of dishonorable, milk-toast meely mouthed over privileged, pompous dog turd, you aint fit to dig that Marines grave let alone speak of him.

    XHN(corpsman)....

  • Nice to see all Americans don't spout racist crap all the time

  • i love johhny cahs i did a report in school on both of them i grew up listing to johnny, i even met him! :)

  • Ira was cute even. He makes me proud

in so many ways to be part native.

  • god bless ira hayes god bless the pima indians

  • Oh Lord Oh Lord OH LORD

if only you people knew how many ppl had the same story as Ira Hayes, but he's the only one that gets the celebrity status....

  • go cry about it

  • The washitchu has alwalys fucked over folks!

  • Tony Curtis played Hayes in the 1961 film The Outsider.[4]

  • ira was the epitome of selfless.

  • I have always loved this song. Know it by heart! Good Man Ira Hayes. Fought for our Country. NATIVE AMERICAN HERO!!!!! Thank you Johnny Cash!

  • Do you think they'll ever make a move about Ira Hayes? I'd like to see it if they ever do. An almost forgotten American hero...

    RIP, Ira.

  • Rent the movie FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. Pretty good movie about the flag raising on Iwo Jima, and what happened to them, including Ira Hayes. Better yet, read the book the movie was based on. Some very horrific stuff. Most people have forgotten the sacrifices made by our parents and grandparents.

  • nah

  • They did make a movie about him Cant remember who played him Tony Curtis seems to come to mind.. Watch Flags of our Fathers.. Great movie

  • U know idc what u say i don't believe in this war it's rediculous. The middle east has been fighting for thousands of years and we can win over there. o and by the way i doubt our freedom is at stake

  • Look, I love this song. I love most of Johny's songs. Maybe i get a little bent out of shape when I think someone is making derivative art out of them...but I watched you entire video for the first time, and I like it well enough.

Best Wishes to you. I think you can make some great art if you keep at it...

    totally barefoot

    aka tota, and teta.

  • Liberals always hate true Americans. Look how they treated Vietnam Vets. Shameful.

  • Shut up. You Republican's got wonderful nursing homes for vets? I know some folks to refer...

  • you can shut the fuck up and not fucking judge me for honoring teh U.S. Marine corps he fought for ur fucking freedom so watch what you say

  • Ira Hayes is a song about a man who died drunk in a ditch after being neglected and abandoned by the country he fought to save.

Just what were you intending to honor? Drunkenness? Early death of vets in the US?

And just WHY should I watch what I say, you mother fucker? What can you do to me, you twat?

  • What's happening to our war veterans TODAY is not ancient history, you twat.

  • I was honoring the fact that he put teh white mans greed behind him and went and fought to save a country that never did anything for him now that is true dedication and courage if you ask me... you sir are very confused about what is going today i sugest u start paying attantion to what is going on get your facts strait and then come talk to me

  • Oh, you like it when people of color are noble enough to go fight your wars for you, come home, and still not demand to be treated as equals.

I'm a ma'am, not a sir, and you need to sober up, learn to spell, pull your head out of your ass and find a responsible adult who can help you before YOU die drunk in a ditch, you walking talking brain stem.

  • "before YOU die drunk in a ditch, you walking talking brain stem". You better not insult Ira you knuckle dragging troll!...ill cut u!

  • Drink lots of water, take three aspirin, and think of me as you are wishing you'd died drunk in a ditch.

  • What the fuck is wrong with you, you ignorant bitch!

  • hey thats how ira died

  • I want to know what Republicans are doing for the men and women who serve the military of this country. Why is it so hard for them to get medical treatment when they return? Why are soldiers families eligable for welfare and foodstamps? Why do contractors get paid better, eat better, get better equipment?

Republicans care about making cheaper body bags so as not to eat up profit from this war.

  • Dude at least the men and women in uniform have the balls to go and fight for out country so you can sit on your lazy ass and argue with me...Wow man men and WOMEN in uniform... wow even the women have more balls than you.

  • Dimwit, I AM a woman! LOL! We don't have balls. We have ovaries.

Those women with balls you know, probably transsexuals. Or men dressed like women. IT'S OK to be attracted to anyone. Society is learning to accept people like you. Although it's true we used to lock you in the cellar.

  • WOW!!! There is no reason to insult me like that my sexual perferance had nothing to do with it, but just in case you are wondering I of the male specious and i do not agree with those who choose to live there lives different by getting sex changes and things liek that... but this topic has nothing to do with this argument..

  • You were mocking me that "even women" have more balls than I do. I simply pointed out that I am a woman and we are not supposed to have balls. I just wanted you to know that in case one of the "ladies" you pick up is a woman you don't get frightened by the lack of male genitals. Freud said castration anxiety can fuck a guy up. I'm just trying to help.

    Nice song, btw

  • Just what is your name??? If you don'T mind telling me...

  • Totallybarefoot, you fool. It's right up there in blue above each one of my comments. You never noticed that before?

  • no no no what is your actual name???

  • Totally Barefoot. It's how I was born. Only my father was surprised, btw. He witnessed my birth, then after my vitals were taken, and the mandated drops put in my eyes, he was given me wrapped in a blanket, counted my fingers and toes, and finally said to my mother, "Oh, look at her, she's...totally barefoot". And that's what they named me. My surname, of course, is private, but its not an uncommon name, and certainly not a famous name. It's my legal name on birth cert, passport, dl, etc

  • so i know this might seem like a stupid question but, your real name is totally barefoot? like that is what it says on your birth certificate? i mean i just have to ask. because i'm in disbelief. but i think that's aaaaawesome if that's your real name.

  • BTW, I was too old to enlist, even in the regular army, even when they raised the age limits. So you can't blame my laziness or my cowardice for my lack of service. When I was prime officer training material, Reagan was in office. We were doing nothing but being slaughtered in Lebanon and meddling in central America.

  • @totallybarefoot ur a fool ,,,, shut the fuck up

  • all soldiers get treated this way by the country they fought for

  • A crappy reward for a Marine, like Tommy said

  • semper fi!

  • semper what?

  • please tell me what you meant by this comment

  • semper fidelis...

  • Hoorah! Devildod

  • Thank you SF Brother

  • Ira Hayes, as many Native Americans, didn't have to join the fight during WW II; however, he,as others, did join and fight. As a Marine, and part Onondaga Iroquois I'll rememeber him for what he did.

  • Any "people" on line? I have just become "retired". The land is not ours anymore. Isn't it crappy?

    Laurette

  • Hi Tim!!!

  • I've been gettin really pissed lately about how big of assholes people are to not even defend the land our forefathers killed for, wiether right or wrong, when are we gonna take the power? And not disrepct indians/Natives/mayans/ why did he get drunk? cuz he was instinctual as most indians are, and his senses said," I got fooled, lied 2, and his damaged his soul, god bless him pls!! His people got screwed but he stood up for you pls chk into what's goin on now, pls join the RTR website

  • a shitty reward for a Marine.

Ira Hayes was found dead outside. cause of death was most likely alcohol related but what probably killed him was exposure.

nice way to say thanks to a guy who helped make sure we still get to speak english.

  • You said it!

  • Especially considering how we forced the First Nation peoples of this land to learn English.

  • That is anciant fucking history get over it it is that damn course of life let it go and quit ur complaining

  • Not ancient fucking history. It was very recent, unless you have the attention span of a gnat which you seem to.

Why don't YOU go enlist in the Marines? Can't pass the exams? Maybe we should send YOU to a boarding school so you can learn English, freak.

  • Johnny Cash was the best!
