  • @neilpettit95 Not quite, lace made from paper... And Nottingham is famous for nothing! Paper lace were the most successful band Nottingham ever produced, and were invited to perform on the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen Mother PMSL! What a joke...

  • The farbee brigade

  • This was the first song I knew all the words to.

  • I was expecting billy to appear at the end tbh

  • Must be about the war in the Trans-Mississippi region.

  • O.K. song, horrible video.

  • This song was written by Pete Callendar and Mitch Murray, who had also written a track called "I Did What I Did For Maria" (sung by Mr Tony Christie) a couple of years previously.

My word ...... I guess that Mr Callendar and Mr Murray must have specialised in composing songs about death and tragedy.

  • Poignant (and excellent) song about the American Civil War ...... with an inevitable heroic ending.

  • im 13 and billy dont be a hero is my ultimate song! i was born in the wrong time!!!

  • Ok... does anyone know the real name of the young woman who was the fiance in this video? Now I have a crush.

  • makes me fill old i remeber when this come out

  • before FM radio was popular =)

  • Good for her. War is stupid. Fighting for peace is like f'ing for virginity. Rich men get richer and the people doing the actual fighting get screwed over.

  • One of the best catchiest songs ever. We all need not be a Hero in Life. But Thank GOD for the Heroes.

  • This Is a very sad song but it's a good song

  • I like this one alot

  • i love the old songs

  • she is a bitch for throwing the letter away

  • @lazyishardwork She threw it away because she couldn't handle it. She was depressed, and angry. she threw it away because remembering how she told him to be careful and he was inconsiderate about that. But most of all, she loved him. And that he died made a bit of her die inside.

  • @lazyishardwork You don't understand the sentiments of the song. War effects so many people. The US Civil War cut deep into American people. Why should she be proud?

  • @lazyishardwork That is a rather harsh judgement, if I may say so. See the pertinent comments made by "ItzOppisitieDay" and "millertas" below.

  • was he a confederat or what

  • @Pogwarts97 No Billy was a Yankee or a Northerner The Confederates were the enemy,

  • @25ghr thanks im english and in year 8 so i dont know too much about the american civil war

In the American South, the Civil influences the culture to a great extent no matter how old you are.

  • @MegaCramer1 Listening to this song as a child was certainly enough to deter me from thinking about becoming a squaddie ...... but I didn't have much bottle ! Thank Christ that not everyone who listened to this song back in the 70's decided not to embark on a career in the military.

  • first time hearing this song! IT FANTASTIC!

  • This song came out when I was in elementary school. The nightly news reports of our guys dying in vietnam was all everybody was talking about. I love this song it is very bitter-sweet . God Please Protect our Troops and bring them home soon.

  • I thought this song was about Vietnam and the soldier blues referencing the Marines.

  • Great song, some of us girls used to sing this on the elementary school bus over 35 years ago. Thank for posting.

  • love the song

  • Why does a band need four guitarists? A lead, rhythm, bass and ??? And, then, the backup orchestra has a bass and guitar, too. Seems overkill.

  • I always loved this song..... from when it came out...

How strange to listen to it again now with all that's going on.

  • i wanna cry

  • this song always makes me think of my uncle billy who died when he was a child.

  • my first favorite song...age 7...still works for me

  • love it!!!!!

  • 2:50 starts the magic...

  • @AceWand Its not a female vocalist. Its one of the guitarists singing in a falsetto voice. The guy second on the left, if you look at the video closely you can see him singing the Billy's fiancee part.

  • @ Dr SBH because the Air Cavalry served in Vietnam, my boss is American, and came to live in the UK after his tour. Also, i don't think it was common for girlfriends to receive a letter telling them how their loved one died during the American Civil War, different values, that would have been for wives, if they could read as an awful lot of people were illiterate at that time. It was standard practice for a loved-one to receive a letter during the Vienam War informing them of the deceased.

  • @droog1967

I believe families got death notices if the fallen were identified. This was often problematic and soldiers often had camp sutlers make up custom tags with their names and particulars so they could be identified if killed. This became standardized in all armies later.

The American Civil War has been called the first "literate" war by historians as for the first time a majority of the combatants could read and write.

  • @pinz2022 i agree that they did get death notices, because i saw a program on the history channel that a family member got a death notice at the same time that he/she got the last letter.

  • it's actually an anti-Vietnam War song... 1974.

  • @droog1967 what makes you say that??...soldier blues are american cavalry....you just made that up did'nt you?

  • i love love love this song.

  • i always loved this song.........and yes i was protesting nam as i do the more recent war games

    PEACE!

  • Since Billy was an idiot, it's probably for the best that he didn't procreate.

  • Wow...atheist and coward. You are a winner in anyone's book! Well...any other atheist/coward's book anyway.

  • You fantasize about having sex with your mother don't you.

  • Is that the only response your pea brain can come up with? That is sad.....did you even go to high school?
