I have used PET bottles for many years and never broken any. I always carry extra water in LAKEN aluminum bottle and hot water in thermo for emergency.
My personal choice but I'm interested to know anyone encountered PET bottle explosion while hiking.
The durability or possible "explosion" factor of a PET bottle is not necessarily enough to deter people from carrying them. They are cleaner, disposable, lighter and cheaper than other solutions. For me it's a couple PET bottles.
A camelback is better. The long straw is nice so you dont have to take your pack off everytime you need a drink. I usually carry a camelback and a 1 liter bottle for boiling water.
I have actually used the PET bottles for many years. I have filled the thinner water bottles with water and slammed them down on the ground and they have never broken. They are extremely tough and durable. I always carry two of them with me at all times wrapped up flat with a rubber band aound them for emergencies.
again, these bottles are very very durable....sabre11004
