  • I would grow loots of pot. Sell that and buy myself something normal to eat.

  • wow this is really interesting... i have seen some bigger projects such as the lilly pad project...... you should check that out... and Cuba after the fall of the soviet goverment pretty much ripped up the city and grew pretty much everything..... so I dont think it should be to difficult to do it on a boat..... however if you do succeed... I'm sure the gov. will want to "TAX" you somehow....... jajajajaj they seem to be good at taxing everything ........ cheers and good luck

  • She took the movie "water world" to serious!

  • where's the trained butcher who will not freak about killing a chicken so they can think a little more clearly lol

  • Comment removed

  • lol@ 1:15 a hydroponic system used for legal vegetation

  • bok bok bok bok.........

BOOOOOOOOOOOOK BOK BOK BOK BOK BOK!!!!!!

  • You are delightful when you are not doing politcal stuff. Neat idea too, we could all be more self sufficient in our daily lives if we really tried.

  • Reminds me of the man made island by Richie Sowa

  • Cool pod, cool video, cool gals

  • Lori is she really that dumb. The earth is getting colder we are going into a ice age. Lori I can't believe that you believe what she belives. You are a lot smarter than that. We need to send all enviromentalists to Europe.

  • If the earth is getting colder why are the ice caps melting and there hasn't been a real winter in New York city since like 2002?

  • i know this sounds typical, but the reason the world would be getting colder is because if the ice caps melt that much they disrupt the ocean currents which have a big effect on the temperature of some areas. and also where im from (scotland) it has gone from being snowy all winter, to snowing about 3 days a year. all in the space of 40 years.

  • I look at the sat views of the ice caps every week and they are not melting. Also NY had the coolest summer since 1929. Read something besides Al Gores book. Try Unstoppable global warming every 1500 years, The deniers, Eco Freaks, Climate of Extremes. This names a few. Please do your homework before you challenge me, I studied Global warming for the last 4 years. I have read all sides of the issue and it is all about control and money. We need to be Americans not D or R.

  • send an environmentalist to france and have her argue something wrong about eating meat so you can figure out how to pollute less, got over vegetarianism while trying to get college degree

  • What a sad story that we've come so far.

Cuz maybe this is one of many signs for the beginning of the end, and now we deal with it so easily, unconcerned...

  • Don't worry, yo! I've just found a great way to rise your confidence in future. Start to do smth yourself. Ride a bicycle, waste less PVHs, grow your own plants etc. Do something what can realy help to preserve our land. Even if it would be the micro=part in relation with global scale - just do it and be sure it gona be better!

  • theresident congratulations you are awesome,beautiful,smart,polite....i love you...

  • frucking permits, goddamned government interference in every aspect of our bloody lives. Why the hell would you need a permit to have chickens on a boat int he middle of a harbour? Peaceful resistance. Don't act like little kiddies needing permission for everything, licences for lawful acts, (marriage FFS!) They can all stick their application forms where the sun don't shine.

  • The Water Pod might not be your tune

But the effort is worth all they're doin'

The answer I need, just from viewing the feed

Is there poontang on that pontoon?

  • "WaterWorld" here we come!!!!! LOL!!!

  • We're going to need this for 2012.

... and what a sexy scientist.

  • too bad there is only 1

    LOL!

  • we want to clean up the planet we love our mum

  • u reckon theres massive vegetarian lesbo orgies on this boat? i do... thinkin bout them now..

  • i wanna eat your fruitsalad (and by that i mean asshole)

  • c-ya in hell, hippy chick!

  • lol, a chicken permit? That makes sense(not much farming going on, but lots of chicken fights). Still hilarious though.

  • FINALLY!!! A hot AND intelligent woman on youtube!!!!!

  • awesome. best story in awhile. I hope it all works out well. I'm really interested in urban farming, and would like to see it catch on like wild fire in not just the major cities. We have co-ops in the south, but nothing like I saw in Detroit a few months back on the news, which was friggin' awesome. City ran farm in the heart run down areas, to provide jobs and food to the residents.

  • this ins't new I even watch scientists create underwater housing it needs work but it has potental

  • The Resident has nice junk in her trunk :)

  • she got nice biscuits in her basket, too! 'specially for a midget.

  • ovens.

  • So-So news cast. I can understand where the lady is coming from with this. However, it seems from this video that she is more frustrated with how things are run and trying to live on her own instead of ligetimantely believeing in what the whole project is about.

  • HELLO WATER WORLD WOO HOO

  • This is a great ,thank you girl

  • shoot a chicken? shoot? really?

  • Damn it, I read the title and thought it was a new underwater iPod.

  • Fail.

  • i think its a pretty cool idea, i like the idea of being self sufficient. plus, vegetable patches for the win, i got some strawberry plants, sooo good :P. dunno why people have to hate on this though they arent doing any harm.

  • Another question: is there a cock onboard? Or are there just female chickens?

  • Are there toilets on board? When they flush, do they flush into the river? Wouldn't that pollute the water? I mean, the last thing New York City needs is a polluted river!

Also, on 2:38 there are bicycles. Huh?

  • "Are there toilets on board?"

    She called it composting.

  • Why would you want to do this? I want a serious reply from anyone who is interested in doing this as to why you would do this?

  • Timbosforporn, an average apartment in southeast Manhattan may run $1 million or more. If you can create a million bucks' worth of real estate for the price of a few permits, hey, why not? That's innovation!

  • "Why would you want to do this?"

So you can get your share of the trillions of dollars being stolen from the US taxpayer and float away when total anarchy breaks out before they install a dictator.

Its dumb enough to get a government grant.

  • This is really cool, Lori, but the website says it's closing this weekend. :( I don't get back to NYC until next week.

  • Whw! the movie water world is reality now...How come you didn't interview Kevin Costner ? he must have been somewhere on that barge :-)

  • This reminds me of The Hatch in LOST. Very interesting.

  • Building a self-contained, self-sufficient environment is a great idea and a personal dream. Congratulations to the people who have created the Water Pod and I wish them continued success. Thanks Rez!

  • This is fucking stupid. At least it beats listening to The Resident's leftist bullshit. Oh, wait...

  • the important question here is, does Papa Johns deliver on board the pod?

  • Desertification will take centuries. I think there will be more advanced technology by then. This project is a sort of scaled down Biosphere,it has scientific merit for small scale experiments.

  • Those green hippies are not realistic. Keep dreaming.

When the end is near, I would hide in a basement. Not on a boat. Silly people.

  • thanks for the report Lori...very interesting.

  • Doesn't Acorn have a job for these people as revolutionary socialists or something?

  • There trying to live in a buble by having tourist and lectures. Right on track for a nut farm.

  • that was cool

  • One of the dumbest things I have ever seen. After war breaks out and nuclear winter sets in because of all the displaced New Yorkers are hungry, the lack of sun leaves no power and the chickens will die faster than you can eat them. First storm and their sunk. Thought I would add to the goofy doomsday scenario. LOL

Anyways, the Resdient looks like she is pushing her tolerance of goofy people to the limit in this interview.

  • Dude she's not talking about surviving after a nuclear fall out.

  • I'm being silly. No she isn't, but if you make all the new Yorkers move because of flooding, there might be. All those middle east cabbies with dirt bombs. LOL

Their idea is something more crazy. Let's say the ocean level rises because the polar ice caps completely melt. How about instead of the floating into the ocean on some tree-hunging self sustained vessel, we just move to higher land? Just an idea. You know like the other less intelligent animals will.

  • hippies that grow food in the city is similar to conservative militia members that grow their own sustainable foods on their small farms. so much in common.

  • they also both smell bad

  • and they both don't like big government.

  • the hippie movement lives on, its like something they would've done in 1965

  • Wonderful concept, thanks for putting this up Lori. But 3 1/2 weeks? What will that tell you? I can spend that long in my apartment. But urban pioneers are cool.

This looks like the first act to a zombie movie - kick off from shore, have the zombies collecting on the docks until they collapse, then walk along the bottom & crawl up the anchor chains...

Many questions - water supply & purification - rainwater or salt extraction? Protection from weather? Chickens? Love the romance angle.

  • If she wants to survive, I suggest setting up the pod at least 100 miles away from New York City.

  • I saw this on rocketboom also. It seems like a cool idea. We need to safely experiment to progress without harming life and the ecosystem. thanx theresident.

  • i liked it better the first time... when it was called biosphere.

and they didn't use tennis balls.

  • Thanks for the post Lori!

    Love Ya!.

  • Wow! What a dumb idea!

  • Hahahaha, not ready for Water World, pongman? How 'bout Mad Max, then? hahaha

  • Pongman, this is neither new nor dumb. In Shanghai, people have been using boats to extend liveable area for centuries. Where have you been?

A serious question though - if a mortgage is taken out on a pod, and the pod is foreclosed on, when the sheriff comes to evict you, can you just give him the finger and sail on? Can the Coast Guard enforce a foreclosure? In today's economy, I might be interested in building a pod off the coast of Dover.
