It's actually both, physical and mental competition. Playing games such as Halo 3 and Call of Duty are seen as sports. It develops your mentality and reflexes. Something you're gonna need. Of course, in the case of football, the players need the physical strength and the coach needs the mentality. All sports need both, physical and mental 'skills'. Since blackjack and poker already have larger corporate sponsors and have already become mainstream, they will not lose sponsors or risk losing future sponsors by claiming they are a sport, whereas MLG would.

It's actually both, physical and mental competition. Playing games such as Halo 3 and Call of Duty are seen as sports. It develops your mentality and reflexes. Something you're gonna need. Of course, in the case of football, the players need the physical strength and the coach needs the mentality. All sports need both, physical and mental 'skills'. Now kid, don't be referring to people as 'nerds' cause, they'll probably have a way better live than your's if you stay like this.

Whether they think it is a sport or not, if they claim it is and society disagrees, MLG immediately loses credibility. Therefore, they must refrain from saying it is a sport until society changes its opinion and can accept it as a sport.

Just because you are sitting in a chair does not necessarily mean it is not a sport. Games such as bridge and chess have been recognized as sports by the International Olympic Committee. You compared Chess to MLG, as an example of something that is not a sport. However the IOC, says that Chess is, in fact, a sport. According to your anology, MLG is a sport as well.

MLG is a business. They are currently attempting to grow out of obscurity and into the mainstream media. If they try to claim that they are a sport, They would lose their credibility and chances with big corporate sponsors. There are too many people, such as senators and governors around the country, that seem to have personal vendettas against video games. Blackjack, however, has already become mainstream. You DO see it on espn and on tv. While gambling may be an issue, there are no legislators trying to ban card games because of poker, as some have tried to do after seeing games such as GTA. Since blackjack and poker already have larger corporate sponsors and have already become mainstream, they will not lose sponsors or risk losing future sponsors by claiming they are a sport, whereas MLG would.

MLG is mainstream though. How can it not be? I don't remember the last time I went to the store and the MLG logo wasn't plastered all over a bag of chips or soda.
And legislators aren't trying to BAN video games, that would be completely ridiculous. They are however trying to create new laws that would limit some video games to minors and will make it mandatory for company's to enforce them.
