Yes I think he was in the habit speeding up his old songs far too much. I'm very fond of Zappa's early live Mothers, and his late Synclavier music... but the last 6 years of his live concerts, he was clearly "phoning it in..." with the fast tempos, I guess he either he thought he'd hide his boredom or just wanted to get through them more quickly

@WattDeFalk I disagree. Frank never took a live performance casually. He'd arrange songs faster/slower, wildly different orchestrations... alway trying keep bring something fresh to the music. He consistently pushed musicians to their limit. Given how hard the material is, it's not surprising that it didn't work every time, but it often did and every concert was unique. You don't get that from "phoning it in". Some of his finest guitar work also happened late in his life.
