goodness... im looking up versions of this song because we are going to be singing this in my middle school chorus... i have the soprano part... i hate those high G's!!!!! there a pain in my ass!
Oh my God! *stares in astonishment* Why didn't I just go to Howard again? Ivies are overrated. I REALLY wished I hadn't listened to so many other people back home. Well done, Howard University [Concert?] Choir. Simply splendid. My school's choirs should definitely take note from you all. =)
@javonnbright This was not even six months before you posted your comment. Sometimes it's easy to miss out on the greatness around us, but rest assured, Howard never stopped sounding like something.
The rendition was VERY true to the form, I will take that into account. But the balance of the sopranos have to do with one thing...and that's blending. Blend is key in the Choral setting more so than any other musical ensemble. After hearing this two more times to capture yout thoughts...I found a MAJOR pitch issue on the long V chord at 1:42. There are just issues that I think could have been done greater than they were presented. I am not saying they arent capable, but work is in order.
I am not impressed with this video from such a great school. Even the band the band is below par over the years have digressed. This particular piece is performed VERY POORLY. Hall Johnson would drop dead again if again if he heard this mess. The rhythms are wrong the tenors are flat, the sopranos are too loud. The Soprano Soloist is GREAT!!! The Tenor soloist needs to Open up sing from the diaphram and use good breath support. I would give this choir a 2 on a 10 scale.
I have to disagree with you. It is true that this piece was interpreted a bit liberally by the conductor, but I find it to be very true to the form. The tenors being flat I can't account for, but I know that the loudness of the sopranos is really due to inadequate microphone distribution, the sound was much rounder in person. You'll notice that from the point when the altos come in on the last phrase, the audio quality changes; that's because of the sound people, not the Choir.
On our very first performance of the fall semester, It is unfortunate that we could not impress you as much as we impressed Jessye Norman and Senator Obama. What Hall Johnson would do can not be argued because he is indeed dead.
It is difficult to fine tune a choir in less than a month when many of the members just like to sing or need an elective. Many have no experience or training or idea of what choral singing requires.
As you must know the spiritual is a form opened to some interpretation. On the issue of rhythm, the conductor a musicologist and authority on the spiritual, would probably say, the rhythms on the sheet of (spiritual)music is a guide-line and the text should be sung in the rhythm of a natural speaking pattern.
The tenors.... I did mention that some people just like to sing. Mrstudent was correct when he said the balance is attributed to audio production. Blending is the key however, that argument can not be applied in a venue where sound checks are pointless. At least you liked my solo :/ I find as a group this was not our best performance of this song, because it was our first. On a scale of 10....2 I don't think so. But we our entitled to our opinions
It is very easy to fine tune a choir in a matter of weeks. I know this being part of a 300 voice choir and orchestra that works on a piece 2 or 3 times and has a 2 hour rehearsal once a week. Secondly in my next statement following this, I did note the rendition was of the style after some reading and asking questions.
Yes people like to sing, but to be in a group that coulminates it's work with a performance they need to be up to standard! I love jessye, my fav; but Obama who has no training would be happy just because someone sang for him. I did take your comments into thought before writing. I am not about a hostile enviroment, just stating my opinion...as you stated before, "we are entitled to our own opinions." Thanks your your respectful response. God's Peace.
I'm certainly not about a hostile environment either. I do agree that you can fine tune a group of "musicians" and a very short amount of time. It is for that reason there is a smaller auditioned group from this choir. Please believe the standards and musicianship of this group is on an entirely different level.
im doing this in my freshmen choir in high school

I disagree. The variation was there, but this isn't a great recording.

A ridiculous comment, qazyies. You are foolish to judge this performance on a youtube clip.

KARIMA IS RAW!!!!... oh yeah buddy, that chord at 1:42 is definitely not a V chord; it's a vi chord-an Eb minor chord in the key of Gb.

Thank you! I wanted to check it against the score and couldn't find mine!
