I`m taking videos of this same engine 4 years later down here in Vineland, NJ. I htought Lakehurst hadn`t seen trains in years. Anyway, feel free to check out some of my railroad videos, and see 3026.
Damn. It would be cool if the track was like a whole Subdivision From Sayreville To Like Camden or wherever the other tracks lead or just build new tracks off of that.
You're like the only person on here with a video from here. I come up here a lot in the summer, but rarely see a locomotive there. Do they ever bring any rolling stock here anymore? And what exactly is that large metal structure in the yard? Anyway, great video, and 5* and a favorite.
Currently the southern Secondary is out of service in Lakehurst again. The SA31 local freight now terminates in Lakewood NJ. The metal structure in the background was supposed to load covered hoppers for shipments to Florida.
Well not Really. This crossing used to have I believe 4 tracks. When the freight train reaches Lakehurst which is the end of the Southern Secondary. The locomotive sits and lays over where the train was when it started moving. The freight train waits the freight cars are kept on a runaround track about a mile or 2 miles away. The tracks that continue South are abandoned. Lakehurst was once a MAJOR Railroad Hub before Conrail.
Yep... it was also a major departure point early in the century for folks heading to Seaside and such. There were only 2 full sets of tracks with 2 additionals used as sidings and for maintainence. One siding still exists to the north of town while the other was removed late 80's. As a child I used to regularly hop a ride south due to the slowdown when it crossed Union Ave.
The track north of town that still exists is called the Ocean County siding. I believe it is used for the SA31 (freight train) to run around to the other end of the freight train to bring the train back up the Southern Secondary to Red Bank and Eventually Browns Yard in Sayreville NJ where the train originates.
That had to be the worst crossing sequence I have heard in my life! Way to late

Why don't the pair up some of the Conrail locos with some old Southern locomotives still in their paint?

Isnt that line abandoned?

@johnyboy087
No. In fact, NJT has grand plans of running passenger service to Lakehurst via this line (the much talked about but little acted upon M.O.M. line)
