I think someone abandoned their dog near my neighborhood. It's a husky and look completely lost. I've seen it around the last 2 wks and fed it today. I feel so bad and people who do this are despicable

I'm from Madeira and I have 4 dogs, and I would never dare to leave any of them. I love my dogs.

If I could do anything about the abandoned dogs here in Madeira, I would, because I love animals. But unfortunately I can not do anything: \ It's sad . .

Many thanks for your feedback. Yes, the situation is not good for the abandoned dogs. But there should not be the circumstance of an animal being abandoned in the first place. It is an indicator of serious problems with that peculiar society. Again, lots of moneys invested in service sectors (hotels, restaurants, etc...) but relatively a minor fraction on education. Madeira is a turist façade, behind which you will find all sorts of social problems from abandoned dogs to infatile prostitution.

I can even name an event about what is wrong with that society, witnessed by someone that was my professor in college, directly connected with the president of that local government, that throws scientific, education, and so on kind of important long term projects into the drawer of his office, preferring to use the money only on big entertainment to fill the ignorant people's eyes, and so on...

I commend you for your noble cause. We have recently adopted a Weimaraner from a local shelter who was abandoned most likely for a possible hip dysplasia. She is still young and does not appear to be in any pain so far but we will be checking it out soon. It is absolutely appalling how dogs are treated in some countries-- especially those who have painted themselves as a perfect vacation destination. Good luck!

Hello! Many thanks for your interest regarding our Husky. Victoria is doing well. Her condition improved a little bit, maybe because the amount of space she got to play and the fact that we try and avoid exercising her beyond a certain limit. Her operation is still in our agenda but unfortunately we still have not managed to accrue the necessary budget to that end. But we will manage some day. She still young and the dysplasic condition will not get much worse before she is at least 7 yo.

Unfortunately, Madeira is exporting the image of a paradise island, but the problems we have been facing here are of paramount importance. Just a few days I went to "MeiaSerra", our main dumping site. I was appalled to find body parts and general hospital waste piling at 3000ft, as a result of a malfunctioning incineration plant, hence compromising our water aquifers.

I couldnt believe it, I asked the staff at our hotel if Madeira had any kind of animal rescue etc - ofcourse the answer was no - I couldnt believe that all the poor dogs had to fend for themselves. It upset me so much I doubt I would return, unless I was returning to open a dog shelter!! One evening we were eating in the centre of Funchal when an elderly small dog lay at the side of our pram, was so covered in flees and flee dirt that he was bleeding because he had been scratching so much....

I fed him a pork chop and he followed me back to the hotel! Igave him water, he was so so so thirsty...he lay in the doorway of the hotel all night. The following morning I was flying home and was gutted to leave him behind. And all the hundreds of others. I was shocked that EVERYONE just walked past sick and injured dogs without a second thought. What can we do?!

The reason I am closing her mouth in the movie is because of the antibiotics she had to take on daily basis due to the infection in her paws. She is now recovered from that condition. It is a beautiful island but the social fabric is very weak, the civic notion is still an unforeseeable endeavour (with the same politician in power over more than three decades, a unique case for Europe!). Huskies are indeed the very tip of this Atlantic inselberg...

Well, that is a good question, perhaps because people are completely unaware of breed specific requirements. Unfortunately this is not only directed to dog breeds. Children are often overlooked here. The schools externally are beautiful and benefited from a huge investment from the European Social Fund, but due to lack of investment on formal human training the percentage of school evasion is around 40% before students are 16 years old!

A new approach must be taken to both raise awareness and facilitate adoptions (free consultations for animals that are adopted from SPAD, treatment vouchers in exchange of pet food bought directly from SPAD, etc...)

This is the only way to help the animals and revitalise the institution...

Unfortunately, the law in Portugal is very condescending to animal owners. Animals are considered as assets, property, subject to treatment at the discretion of their owners. Moreover, animals are "protected" but from the point of view of human sanitary health.

Even if it were possible to have a lawsuit against such citizens, it is not easy to find this people as they normally abandon the animals far way from their homes. Also there have been cases where the electronic tags (which became enforced in the EU), are brutally removed from the animals before they are abandoned, so as to render impossible the tracking of their owners.

Unfortunately, animals are treated as material objects by many people. I regret that more often than not domestic animals are subject to abandon, especially when the holiday season approaches.

People then realise they have no one to leave their animals with and they are not prepared to give up their holiday for their pets... This is why I am of the opinion domestic animals must not be chosen as a surprise gift to anyone. They must be a personal choice instead. For they imply a lot of responsibility and dedication. Love to all.

Yesterday I went to SPAD and during the short period of time (15 minutes) I was there in front of the reception desk the telephone rang 5 times from people who wanted abandoned dogs removed from their door steps. SPAD has more than 300 animals in cages, the situation is absolutely terrible and the institution is in collapse administratively.

This beautiful Husky had been abandoned in our neighbourhood. When my wife and I found this animal, it was then apparent she'd been ranover by a car; she also had a few bruises, fortunately no broken bones, but she was left with her back paws in bare flesh. We took her home to look after her. It's been a few days now and nobody is looking for her. So we suspect she'll be with us for good... She is now eating better and more. She still shows signs of pain. We named her Victoria, she's a WINNER!
