it depends how hard you touch with your stylus. if you touch hard it will be darker than if you touch lightly.you can change that in the menu under calibrate.
Late but flipping the picture helps to point out any irregularities. When you're drawing/painting/whatever you become used to the picture, flip it and you might spot that the arm of a character is too long or twisted.
