Sooner or later, the only videos we're going to be able to make or watch, are of people playing with sticks in the yard. Of course until THAT gets copyrighted. Fuck you WMG, and fuck youtube.
Your absolutely right there primmaven.I think 16&35mm should be at least half the cost of what it is.I also think that Panasonic and Sony
should drop the price of the memory cards a 32 minute card in P2 is $1800.You need several to shoot a days worth of filmming.I made the mistake of only having 2.The external hardrive and a laptop crashed we lost several days of data. You really need about 6-8 of them. That way you can dump to say 3 external harddrives and a couple of desktop or laptops.
Anyone really interested in film vs digital should check out the 'red' digital cameras and just that brand in general. Not only do they match film in terms of look and feel, they have the handyness of digital....artists like Peter Jackson are already choosing to film using this tech. Both 'Che' movies were shot with this aswel. It's the way of the future and it is so very affordable.
I own a super 16 EL Bolex and a HVX200.The p2 workflow is a real headache. Problems of loading to hardrive with Final cut. With film I know the image is there.I can concentrate on frame, focus, etc. With digital I'm messing with recorders and worrying about did the data take and will I lose it.The res of film, the colors and exposure latitude of film is far superior to digtal.Cheap too when you take the whole process .Not to mention digital gear is outdated quickly.35mm film arrived 1887.
granted, digital is A HELL OF A LOT EASIER to shoot with (i shoot a lot of 16mm) but before digital will become the standard, certain effects, digital compression methods, and just general picture quality will have to improve.
any digital camera no matter how advanced at the moment can never come close to the look and the effects you achieve with film and a talented DP. as well, shooting film is just so pimp haha
Did you see "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"? That movie was all digital, shot in a very short time, was cheap as hell and look really good. It's one of the best arguments to shoot digital.
well, tbh, no i haven't seen "...mexico" even tho i do like rodriguez. but ok i stand corrected.
i guess even so, it just comes down to personal preference. it is still possible to shoot film cheap as hell and far less stressful. i like the whole idea of film and the whole process involved tho.
i own that film, granted it looks good, but my opinion is that it looks kinda rushed and cheap, sometimes i think the only thing the director cared about was the money making part of the film and it shows. you look at a film like i dunno..schindlers list, and it has class and looks beautiful on screen. i just think film has and will stand the test of time, even if digital does as well.
I think it all comes down to story and how you want to tell it. A movie doesn't just consist of it's aesthetic look, It depends on camera movements and beats, and how they are combined to tell the story. I come from Tijuana, which is basically now turned into the place that Hollywood uses to makes their movies cheaper. There are a lot of talented people Ive meet who can't or won't ever get a chance to do something of their own because of just how fucking expensive film is.
So I say bring on the video and make it better, because after all if you shoot a shitty movie using film, well then you only have a sort of handicap that makes shitty compositions look better.
Once Upon A Time in Mexico has been my reference as to why digital is not up to par with film. That movie had the look of a day time soap opera. Desperado was far more better visually...and script.

Broadcast equipment and filmstock should drop in price like domestic household consumer goods.
Like DVD and BLU-RAY players.Plasmas and home computers.
In my 25+ years of working with movie film and
Broadcast equipment I have only seen it to go up.
