have you gotten the chance to "thump" on this blade? i own the western hunter and am curious of its splitting capabilities, also i used a really thin cord that i got at a fishing store in alaska, to wrap the handle and gave me tons more traction and it also still fits in the sheath pretty well, takes a little more effort to pull it out but still functions great. would it be possible to have someone make a custom kydex sheath?
love these reviews, nutn. just got one of these and a roach belly also. i was wondering if anyone has drilled a hole in the handle for a lanyard? is the tang long enough? keep up the great work!!
Man I just cut my finger on a kitchen knife earlier, it didn't seem shaper than my Roman Dagger because it had a rubbery like edge but I started slicing my finger lol, I'd hate to see wh- well not hate I'd pay to see what my dagger could do... not on my finger though. :P
I actually own a Cold Steel knife made about 15 years ago called the Red River Scalper knife which looks exactly like this knife except it has a 7" carbonV blade, riveted beachwood handle, and simple leather sheath ..You shouldnt underestimate its Survival utility, The flat grind cuts extremely well and weighs the same as many 4" fixed blades yet gives you much more cutting power per oz...As for thin blades, the classic Ka-Bar was only 5./32" thick and arent considered too flimsy by any stretch.
if you know how to use it. ive trained with knives and i could probobly fight of a coyote with a pocket knife due to the fact i could get to the vital points, this knife is more than enough blade for defence if you know what your doing
yes is as ugly as our friend Nutn! hahaha i even think that most of kitchen knives are far more beautyful that this CS and i wouldnt classify it like "combat efficient" or so much "security" but hey, Nutn is right! Much qulity for the price
You can just make a new loop for the knife that goes ower the edge of ur pants and down on ur belt, did someting like that with my cold steel bowie spike with paracord, worked really well! worth a try if you want to conseal a fixed blade
I gotta admit, i dont see the difference between this knife and a chefs knife. Which might mean I have a set of high dollar outdoor knives in my kitchen :)
A thought about extraction from the sheath and creating some more grip (with not much handle being exposed), some carefully applied shoe goo at the end of the handle to from a sort of rim/ridge (like on the end of a baseball bat handle) might provide appreciable purchase. Should work well on the polypro material, too, don't know about duracoat. Just a thought. Might be handy.
Nuntnfacy you should really take a good look at ontarios Old hickory line of knives. I believe the long hunter is an old hickory remake. when you buy the old hickory you will have options of blade shape and lengths. plus and my opinion an up grade in steel 1095 high carbon yes you heard my right 1095. and the prices of the old hickories are only like 6 to 15 bucks
I very much like your philosophy on knives. It's much more intelligent than I have heard from my contemporaries, although, seeing as I'm a teenager, I suppose some lack of intelligence is allowable.
I don't like carrying knives, because in my country, the laws are very strict about such things, and I also don't like the possibility of going stupid when confronted, drawing a blade, and escalating the situation past what I'm prepared for and things getting ugly.
If someone attacks me I immediately consider it escalated to a life or death situation. generally the laws in USA allow people to defend themselves, better to be judged by twelve then carried by six. If you think you cant control your temper and may pull a weapon in anger you definitely shouldn't carry a weapon. The disciple from a military background helps control temper and focus counter attack.
This knife looks very cool, especially for the price. But can you do a field test of the knife? I'm curious to see how that bad boy batons wood and holds an edge.
Bravo Nutnfancy!!! This is one of the reasons I love cold steel. So much variation and value. The Long hunter looks to fill this bill nicely. Love the shinny blade and shape. Great review. It will be interesting to see your take on this steel. And by the way Lynn Thompson needs to make an updated proof video. Jet over and out
i like the way you talk about the history of knive or gun !! thank you i hope you will talk about the GURKHA KUKRI long history !! i like the Cold Steel GURKHA KUKRI !!
You can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig. That there is a kitchen polished kitchen knife its not a dagger nor does it have a crossguard although it would WAY more efficent in a combat situation. And for 20$ its worth it.
Needn't be a downside, but i just wouldn't buy it as there are other knifes that ould be just as good and look better too.
I like Cold Steel for their Price, Quality and most of the Designs (own a force recon, ti-lite and black bear classic) but sometimes....just take a lok at that "special forces shovel"....good god.
Yeah it does and it could function as such. Has thicker spine shouldn't bend as easily and form follows function. Very functional for the tasks I mention.
should have looked to see it was a nutnfancy vid before I clicked.
such an idiot.

nutn could try filing some grooves into the handle for increased finger grip. or drilling some holes in it.

alucard5628 1 year ago
another option for concealing a knife like this is simply tie it around your waist
with a strap or some paracord, or maybe a leg drop type of thing, and then just cut out the seam inside your pocket so u can stick your hand trough.
in cargo pants smaller knives are near invisible, and the larger ones
just look like you have regular items in your pocket.
put your hand in the pocket and surprise the shit out of everyone by pulling out
a knife that couldn't possibly fit in there.

Most good hunting/skinning knives are basically butcher knives because that is what this type of knife is used for

Just kidding...I just ordered one of their SOG-knockoffs in the same steel. Anxiously waiting to see how it'll perform.

My concern would be the sheath. the knife is it-self would be great for the out doors . is there a sheath you could buy that would hold that knife??

Personally I wouldn't call 7 inches overly long for skinning. My knife of choice for skinning 1400-pound steers is a 7-inch Green River butcher.
AwakeAndDangerous 3 years ago
You could put some grip tape on that handle to make it a little more sticky.

I ordered a Cold Steel catalog, can't wait for it to come in. I enjoyed your Spyderco catalog video.
Nice Nutnfancy adventure patch, I want one.
I'm definitely going to have to order a long hunter. You simply can't beat the price for what you get.
The handle looks nicer in the video then in pictures I've seen.
Looks like it would make a great camping knife. As well as a quick defensive/offensive knife.
I like the backdrop, cool!
Wow, awesome concealment tip.
Great review 5 stars!
