I used to live in New Guinea--There are people who live in that country that can't live on their small islands anymore because of global warming. (Look up 'Carteret islands'). The sea level is rising and salt water is ruining their crops, washing away the shore. I think as mature adults it's important to realize that 'paradise' (on islands eating coconuts) is not always the fabulous place we imagine.

The Africans here are made to be on the same level as animals. Their life is portrayed as simplistic and "primitive" -- which implies that the Western people are more complex and civilized.

As a South African I think I should know what racism is. I know of incidents where blacks put tyres around whites and lit them, and even today many whites believe all blacks are stupid and want to rape you, and there are many blacks who think all whites are rich. There is no racism in this cartoon, if anything, the opposite is true. You can either see the blacks turning into whites as "racism", or you can see it as showing that there is no real difference between the races at all.

I don't find this offensive because the kids are not behaving in a demeaning, stereotypical or offensive way. It's just two children dancing and singing on a beach. I'm an American with immigrant African parents, I've dealt with my share of racist images and this is nothing to get upset over.

Really funny to see a race issue in a kids cartoon. At the time when the cartoon was made there was no racism in Soviet Union, there were no people of other races - no black population at all. The reason for this was that Russia did not import slaves, like America did. Thus now Americans have to be politically correct out of guilt for the crimes of their ancestors. No such issue exists in Russia, thus no political correctness exists there as well. If you don't like it - don't watch it!

Yes I saw African people. They actually have a face and facial expressions despite being darker. Chunga Changa shows them as not having full face like the Russian kids, but like pieces of charcoal. I don't find this offensive because the kids are not behaving in a demeaning, stereotypical or offensive way. It's just two children dancing and singing on a beach. I'm an American with immigrant African parents, I've dealt with my share of racist images and this is nothing to get upset over.

But than again, when ppl say it's "racist", they usually have a reason, and that reason is of cause the bad history. That 'bad' history wasn't present in Russia at that time, and this video wasn't made in the US, so the comments that this video is racist doesn't apply here. (that means that comments of this type you can post somewhere else). After all, this IS a 'kids' video, and i didn't come here to show my 1yr old so we can also read that nonsense.

Those were happy times for the kids, they knew nothing about cold war, racism, and other b..sh**t. Really funny to see a race issue in a kids cartoon. At the time when the cartoon was made there was no racism in Soviet Union, there were no people of other races - no black population at all. The reason for this was that Russia did not import slaves, like America did. Thus now Americans have to be politically correct out of guilt for the crimes of their ancestors. No such issue exists in Russia, thus no political correctness exists there as well. If you don't like it - don't watch it!

Lovely song! Interesting to see comments about Russians being racist :))) We don't need to be politically correct, like Americans do it, since we were not the ones bringing Africans to our country as slaves... Some Africans are very dark, others are lighter, what's the problem here? As for facial expressions, kids living on an island are different from kids from mainland due to the simple life they lead.

Maybe not in Russia, but in America this would be considered very racist.
Think about , the black kids are too dark, and they sing about singing coconuts and bananas all day (supposedly for free)
Notice also how the African kids have few indications of expressions on their faces, but when the white kids appear they look more human and have normal facial features.

People who find this racist should get a life! This is a simple cartoon for kids, there is no reference to Africa at all. Kids have no concept of race - and this is very good. They also have no concept of money - they get everything for free, in case you did not notice. And this is also very good.

I dont think you read the posts carefully. The black kids have a constant smile on their face and no wrinkles or any skin features that would indicate deep though or emotion such as the white/Russian kids have in the same cartoon. That is messed up.

Katya, they are happy and cute. In American racist cartoons of black people from the 1930s the black people are also happy and cute. That doesn't mean its not wrong to portray them like this. Like I said. Explain to me how it is black kids here have no other emotion except happy, but white kids have multiple emotions and wrinkles on their face. Also there aer no black people so black so only eyes and teeth are visiible.

In 1930's, black people were used as actors for the "show of monkey" in USA, in the USSR, in 30's, blacks were ellected the president of Moscow Soviet, performed classic music concerts and even sang Soviet songs, as did Paul Robeson, and even appeared at classic films like "Tsirk". You're basing your argument based on "there were laws" that doesn't mean there was not racism or that people followed these laws. In addition over the time Russian culture changed especially in years prior to ww2 when USSR forcefully integrated other countries. I proove there was and is racism in Russia by presenting THIS cartoon and by my personal experience. Also anyone can type in google Soviet Racism, there is more than enough racism. Of course mostly its not about blacks

Maybe you never saw movies with black people but they are brown and they have same kind of emotions as white or asian people. No, the cartoon appears racist to me because in America people are more aware about existance of racism. There is not "more" racism in America, people just know more about it than in Russia because there is more black people here. In former Soviet Union there is a lot of racism against Jews or people of Caucaus origin, or non-Russians, probably more racism than any other country.

In Russia perhaps, but not at former USSR, specially because in USSR appeared the first anti-racist laws in 1936, specially the 123 article of the so called "Stalinist Constitution". Together with laws, in the white USSR, there were anti-racist movies as "Tsirk", starred by the famous actress Lyubov Orlova, the "Soviet Whoopy Goldberg". Before the first black president in US, USSR had its first Caucasian(Georgian) leader and a black president of Moscow Soviet, R. Robinson.

I lived there and I know otherwise. All the time I heard how "greedy" the Jews are or how Georgians can never control their sexual temper and rape women, or how Ukrainians are "dumb provincial folk". 1. Sure, even very dark skinned people are not black in real life. Very light skinned people aren't white either, which is how the other children appear. Neither means that there's racism at work. 2. What do you mean they don't have facial features? They have eyes, eyebrows, mouths, noses, ears. What exactly is missing? 3. They show surprise at finding the boat, but otherwise are happy not because they're black but because they live on a "miracle island" where it's said anyone would be happy.

Lol, probably you never met an African then. Lots of blacks in America are brown because they are more or less mixed, but in some places of Africa there are some people who are really black. You can notice it easely at Kenian marathon runners. Btw, a few women are more beautiful than an African woman as dark as the night.

Yes I saw African people. They actually have a face and facial expressions despite being darker. Chunga Changa shows them as not having full face like the Russian kids, but like pieces of charcoal. By contrast the Russian kids have extensive expressions on their face which somewhat indicate a personality. I am sure everyone understands it.
