A ABM site in Poland wouldn´t do shit against the russians. Either the missiles are too close, which means that the time window for interception is too short or (that goes for most of russias arsenal) the missiles will never cross Poland in the first place. Most trajectories from Russia to the USA go over the artic circle, so an ABM site in ALaska or Canada would actually be *more* effective. Same goes for the brainfart of stationing ABM on Cuba.

When you appropriate resources to force the missile shield obsolete you are sending an aggressive message - no matter what justifications you have for doing so, there is no argument of self defense that justifies this. Because the economic groth is exponential the amount of recources will decrease faster and faster. (import now ca. 10 million barrol a day) This is lost money, going to other countries. USA is dependent from Imports.
Only renewable energy is a long term solution. The conversion of energy production has to be smooth and has to provide economic groth. The right environment has to prepared by the goverment. New technologies, education, whatever.

The USA current GDP(PPP) is 14 trillion, but as much as 70% of that is based on consumer spending and it is not a real figure. It is very possible the USA GDP will shrink to 12 trillion or less in the next couple of years due to the massive bubble its government created in the entire economy of the country. As a student of history, I feel realy sorry for the Russian people. They have never had a chance. From the Czars, to the mass murderer Stalin, and all the Soviet dictators who followed, to the new oligarchy and post Soviet aperatchiks like former KGB Putin.
It's a tribute to the human spirit that they have been able to contribute to the worlds music, art, science, literature, etc.
They deserve better. Maybe one day they'll have their one Barack Obama. Putin/Medvedev is NOT it!

1: Cut the oil and gas supplies. And watch Russias own economy go down the drain, too, because their main trade income has just ceased and there´s no other buyer able to take up the slack. Russias economy is utterly dependent on the income they get from selling energy resources to europe.
