last one... dont read books about dance, dont read critics and reviews.... just go to see good shows, and enjoy it. Once you saw a couple of thousands shows, THEN you can start to read about, just to know why you enjoyed it!
Ps, i did not want to be critical on comments, or offensive. I just work on culture, and i dont like when people hide their lack of direct experience behind pseudocultivated words. Dance, when is well done, is mainly emotional, and if emotions are not passed to the audience, is not good dance, is just a thecnical fake. So, experience emotions and beauty, then analize.
At least write it correctly.... Ridi pagliaccio. And dont do too much intellectual analysis... if you dont manage it. Sorry for saying it so brutally, but Pina was history before you tube, there is not much freedom in his creation, just intelligence and sense of new times. Take a tiket for london and go to Sadderswell, to understand better contemporary dance.
I think what Pina was trying to do was exercise freedom of expression to the point where the freedom has more value than the expression because she was traumatized by the Nazi regime movement Enstartete kuntz of censorship where they burned books and other works of art ( specially jewish) during1935-1940. The excessive freedom in her art reflects this psychological trauma. By breaking away with all traditional structures her freedom becomes a symbol more valuable than the expression.
Pina grew up in a war torn country where most of the infrastructure was reduced to ruins, most of the men were dead and the country was divided by three ocuppying military regimes. All the psychological trauma inflicted upon her by growing up in these conditions reflects in her neurosis driven ultra futuristic attempts to reinvent modern dance to the point of turning it into an irrecognizable form of performance art. You know what would make me really sad? That no one would be able to

What about Rudolf Laban he created the theory of spatial dynamics. The movement within the extension. He also wrote a book "Effort" (1947) about his theory of efficient movement. This character studied the movement of humans and how to make it more efficient. This is the kind of stuff I want to read and not about your psychological problems. If you do not have the guts it takes to be an intellectual then by all means walk away.
What makes Pina such a genius? The violent manipulation of stage props rather than actually have people dance? The other day I was in a barroom fight , tables and chairs were flying; it was better performance art than "Cafe Muller".I am laughing so hard right now my gut is about to explode.Thank you for making me laugh so hard. Or covering a stage with soil? Why not cover it with excrement and call it excrement oriented performance art? OMG LOL.
Pina was talking to Jose Limon at Juilliard back in 1961. Limon was trying to convince her that she was 50 years ahead of her time.Pina replied: I will give you one word that will shed so much light into modern dance, performance art and what I am trying to do that you will be amazed, dumbfounded and awestruck all at once. The word is retard.
Oh are we "Arguing"? I thought we were learning about the history of modern expressionistic dance instead of the fact that labeling people as moronic does nothing for the advancement of western civilization. I never said that Pina was less than a genius. I have my reservations about her "performance art".If you are tired of learning please take a break while I read the enciclopedia Brittanica for the 145th time. The article about "modern dance".
One day in Paris on a sidewalk cafe named "Le recherche du Temps Perdu" Pina was having her favorite apple struddel with beer imported from Berlin when Jean Paul Sartre walks by.He asks: "Aren't you Pina Bausch?" She replies: "Yes, and I think your book, "Being and Nothingness" is more about nothingness than being." Sartre laughed and retorted: "And I think you know nothing about dance but your performance art is outrageous!" If you can prove this anecdote is fake...
Mario Petipa and Lev Ivanov choreographed "The Nutcracker Suite" in 1892.The modern dance expressionistic movement started in 1900.Do the math. The time difference is irrelevant.Suggestion: Read 200 history books before you post your comments on this forum to avoid the risk of being publicly humilliated because of your ignorance of the subject.
Bausch was born in Dusseldorf in 1940. I thought she choreographed ballet because she did work with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Co in NYC and New American Ballet. She studied at Juilliard (NYC) in 1960. Her teachers were Antony Tudor, Jose Limon and Paul Taylor. She choreographed "The Dance of the Blessed Spirits" which was classical ballet (music composed by Christoph Gluck) But after watching most of her work I think what she does can be called modern dance. Please do not call it ballet.
quality that never ceases to surprise and impress?True. That she departs too far away from classical ballet? True. Classical ballet is aesthetically pleasing because you know what to expect. But Pina Bausch choreography is trying too hard to shock and awe. Perhaps I do not like to be surprised or impressed when I go watch ballet. And the suffering of the primma donna? There is enough suffering in the world. Do I have to watch ballet dancers suffering? Innovative yet disturbing.
After watching the performance 12 times and comparing it to classical ballet such as Tchaikovski's "Nutcracker suite" and "Swan Lake" I find it departs too far away from classical. That the choreography has some merit , of course there are moments where the poetry of the body in motion is obvious even brilliant. But the static dancers? Is this some kind of criticism of classical performance. There is no turnout, no arabesque it is all avant garde. That Pina Bausch modernism has an innovative

@tinamc921 Some of the awards Pina has received include the Laurence Olivier award from the UK. The Kioto Prize from Japan and the Goethe prize form her natal Germany. So the fact that her work has been recognized by the international arts community is established. Now you know who you are dealing with.I do my research.I suggest you do extensive research before you write your response so you do not end up feeling intellectually inferior. @MrMultijosefus Yes, I know how to use wikipedia as well. congratulations. you wouldn't compare pina to classical ballet because they are two completely different genres. pina was a genius and the fact that you say you watched swan lake and think she departs from the classical too much is moronic because duh, that was the purpose of her choreography.
@MrMultijosefus swan lake and pina's version of rite of spring are from two completely different time periods. now i'd like a 20 paragraph essay about how you should compare apples to potatoes.
@tinamc921 In 1983 an Italian tabloid reported an intimate relationship between Bausch and Federico Fellini. What was the name of the newspaper? If you can not answer this question then it is you who know nothing about Pina.
@tinamc921 So you think that classical ballet is not dance? Then what is it? Have you seen Cafe Muller? Dancers walk instead of dancing and they are stumbling upon chairs and tables? This is revolutionary modern expressionistic dance taken to such extremes that it can not be called "dance" anymore. That it is some form of modern "theater" or perhaps a breaking with tradition to the point of creating a new artistic genre. I will concede this point. Do not you love all this controversy?
@tinamc921 Even Kurt Jooss Pina's teacher and his colleague Sigurd Leeder were criticized for their "Dance of Death" in 1927 for being too avant garde. They went to Paris in 1926 to study CLASSICAL BALLET with Russian ballerina Lubov Egorova. The theater at Munster changed personnel and programs because of this avant gardism. Many of Jooss colleagues left the WEstfalische Akademie that he later moved to Essen renaming it the Folkwang Schule.
@tinamc921 So even Pina's teacher studied classical ballet and she was a genius of course the choreographer for Tchaikovski's "Swan Lake " and "Nutcracker Suite" was a pathetic fool who knew nothing about "dance"

@tinamc921 It is futile for students to try to upstage their teachers so go back to your books and read about 2000 pages of history before you attempt to apppear more intelligent than me. And can you do this while sharing interesting facts about modern expressionistic dance?

Que le parece si hace un profundo analysis de el baile de Pina Bausch y asi todos aprendemos algo en vez de burlarnos de la inabilidad de los rusos de hablar espanol.
