  • this song just blows me away every time i hear it

  • What an anthem brill

  • I stand to be corrected, but this was the city which was besieged by German soldiers for over

2 years, before the Russians reclaimed it, marking the turn of the tide during a terrible war which cost the lives of over 50 million civilians, not to mention countless military divisions.

  • @cytotoxix

well, thats stalingrad actually. but i get what you mean. and youre right.

  • Beautiful song from one of music's accomplished sons. A definite CLASSIC. Thank you, Mr Joel.

  • God rest the brave Russians who defended the city

  • My Great Grandfather died there, perished underneath the ice bringing food to the starving people.

  • Billy Joel has always been amazing singer.

  • It is composed by Brahms...i think the titel is all der irren Qualen. But it is only the harnony Structure that is copied

  • Does anyone know what peace of classical music inspired the theme from the beginning and the theme that's played at the end?

  • Я люблю эту песню!!

  • -Where can I buy the ticket to where my friends waiting for me?

    -In a liquor store.

  • As ever Billy sayes it all!!! and in the end I agree with him - lets forgive and forget and please can we just get on with each other and take actions to encourage our governments to do the same - this is the only way we will survive!!!!!!

  • Russian letters remind me of Aliens. Lol. But their our brothers, even if we fought them. Just like Canadians and Americans, Americans and Britts. We're all brothers. Never forget to remember. Ever.

  • Билли класно поёт, и песни у него зыкие.

  • Billy Joel is one of the best songwriters of all time

  • I totally love this song, i think Billy Joel's the greatest songwriter of all time

  • Nice tribute to the people of Leningrad .

  • So beauti real song !

  • a typical Joel song, making a social-political statement in his songs. The state nationalism in the cold war made Americans think all Russians are animals, barbarians. Billy shows that we are all just people, all with good qualities and weaknesses.

  • @thomassios

It was the Cold War that motivated the Americans and Soviets to divide the country of Korea after the Japanese were driven out. Same thing with Germany, only now the cultural and political divide between the Koreas has led to a very hostile situation that the US is pissing themselves over. And they wouldn't have this problem if they and the Soviets had not been so hostile towards each other.

  • @melaniediekranke if i am not mistaking is it the battle of stalingrad.

    bart

  • o so beautiful cry sometimes when i hear this song

  • the begining of the song made me feel all emotional tbh. i could picture people being sent to war nd being killed. but then the end made me feel a bit happier. nut then he mentioned clowns, so i got a bit scared. =S

  • @melaniediekranke

this is panorama from WWII museum in Moscow on The Victory Sqare (Ploshad Pobedi) artist - Dmitry Belukin

  • just beautiful!

  • Leningrad goes to your heart and makes you cry

  • Thanks Bill Dzhoulju for such песьню, I Russian and me have not bypassed it, I know as there was awful, my grandmother was in Lenigrade at this time and told to me. To all West it not to understand, they heroes, those житили this city heroes

  • wanker

  • Liebe das Lied!!

  • As I recently wrote to a very good Russian friend of mine, this song is a kind of man's brotherhood anthem.

Long life to the martyr city of Leningrad (Peter).

    Billy Joel forever!!!

  • @Cazagusanos Leningrad not martyr city, it never fell or died and held on 900 days. Hero City yes, martyr? No.

  • @CrocidileGena79

    It did fall...Stalingrad didn't...Leningrad did.

  • @0B0Eriec Leningrad never fell, it was surrounded but the germans never entered the city.

  • @duvel60

    sorry. You are right.

I thought I'd read somewhere that Leningrad did fall, but apparently I was mistaken.

  • @duvel60 leningrad was not surrounded by germans and the germans almost took whole the city until the russians surrounded the germans and wiped em out of the city

  • @246martijn That's Stalingrad you're talking about sir.

  • what he said

    vvv

  • ///....да...это ВЕЛИКАЯ ПЕСНЯ...

    We did.

Not WW II but WW III with our resistence against warlords like Ronald Reagan an thank god people like Billy Joel where on our side.

    Hast du das verstanden?

  • beautiful song

  • this song is sooo sad it makes go all tingly inside and just want to cry.

  • Debil yourself !

  • Enorm!!!!!

  • this song makes me cry. Our schoolband played it at my graduation and it was so sad to see all those familiar faces of my old school mates filled with tears, knowing that our graduation would probably be our last great encounter.

  • @Nathanderweise8 orgaise a reunion

  • @Nathanderweise8 respect!

  • @Nathanderweise8 we also played it at our graduation ^^ unfortunately it hurts to hear it, as my girlfriend dumped me after 3 years, just after we finished that evening :(

  • Billy Joel has german ancestry ! His family was ripped of by the Nazis (they had a big company) and emigrated to the USA...

  • sehr schönes Lied!!!

  • "In that bright october sun, we knew our childhood days were gone"

replace october with september and this line fits on my generation after 9/11

  • 38th parallel = border between north and south korea

    yellow = asian people

    red = communists

  • Sad and truth !

  • Молодчик, супер!

  • Grass war ja schon immer seltsam, selbst mit K geschrieben bleibt er es.

  • Great song! Thanks!

  • Fraser got it right

  • varsityluverr, he meant cowardly by yellow and the reds were communists. So, he meant cowardly communists

  • I very like this song because is very real.

  • "Yellow Reds"= North Koreans and Chinese...38th Parralel, "Artificial border", created post WW2, between North and South Korea.

  • what were the yellow reds? some1 plz reply!!!

  • Communist Asians.

  • Comment removed

  • Thats a negative.

Yellow red= Communists from north corea and china. 38th parralel (as said in song) is the line where they invaded south corea.

  • not 2 be mean or anything i just wanted 2 say u spelt korea wrong but i think u already knew.

  • coreans say corea; trust me :)

  • k. . . . . -.-

  • I think UrmelaufEis has hit the nail right on the head...it's all about the similarities, two children, divided by cold war politics...their loves, desires, wants, fears and worries we all have despite what nationality we are and what the politicians decide for us in their wisdom Could call it "Baghdad" today, and the meaning would remain. Tremendous song, always brings a wee tear to my eye.

  • My Uncle escaped to Russia in 41 on a bike, joined the Lithuanian Division of Red Army & fought from Gates of Moscow all the way to Berlin..Thousands like him made victory possible.

  • so schön...

  • i think its talking about how the generation of children born from the battle hardened red army.

    correct me if im wrong

  • immer wieder gern gehört! ein toller song!

  • Personally I think it is something that is rediculous to argue.

    Great song.

  • I think you are missing the point,Billy is just making a comment on the futility of war and how men are sometimes forced to do things they don't want to do.

  • Ocuupation includes being inside the city. The siege is just surrounding the city. Nazis never got inside Leningrad. My friend's great aunt survived the siege and now she always has to have fridge full of food. She has phobia on running out of food.

  • Leningrad was under seige, the Nazi's never really infiltrated and took over the city. They surrounded the city, cut off supplies, and performed numerous air strikes and raids. Many died due to harsh winter conditions and lack of supplies. Many were given the chance to evacuate but many stayed because it was there home. They persevered and they lived life as normally as they could. I'm an American and I take high offense to your comment Funiery. It shows that not only Americans can be ignorant.

  • Leningrad was occupied.I know this because I'm live here.Don't argue with me.Amerikans always think that they are very smart but it was not .Occupation 900 days.People was nothing eat.Mams ate their children.Anybody pigeons, cats and dogs were eat.We in Russia said in such cases: "Who's there was not, he does not understand, but who was he did not forget ."...

  • so this is about the coldwar right this song rocks I love it and i get chills everytime I listen to it

  • Yup.

  • LOVE SONG

  • This is a pretty cool song ,I used to not like it but then I just kinda did hehe

  • Don't know, just took it from internet on the search term "Leningrad".

    Chris

  • This picture shows the Leningrad of the Second World War during the German occupation
