@Carls493 Sadly it cannot mimic instruments from Sonic 3, as those were unique instruments developed through the ones used here, try VOPM it's a Genesis/Megadrive plugin that allows you to create or import any instrument edited from the Genesis's Hardware.
@Carls493 Yes while somewhat limited if used correctly can be quite awesome. I Recommend at least looking into VOPM if you want those Zone specific instruments. I can teach you how to use it if you want.
@124SonicXT You can teach me a bit. I had to use a version of Gens called Gens KMod as well as something called MVS Tracker in order to match certain numbers and parameters up to get the instruments I wanted.
@Carls493 I am familiar with MVS Tracker, but In my opinion it is terribly outdated. I'll try to teach as much as I can but note that VOPM is cryptic as fuck. VOPM is the sound chip that was used in most Yamaha Piano synths. It is the actual soundchip used in Megadrive and Some arcade cartridges. If you can find proper OPM's and Parameters for it, I'm sure you'll make Some very good use of it. In my opinion it's a MUST HAVE for anyone looknig to make Genesis music.
@PurpleMetaKnight2000 None, Sonic 3D Blast used Specific instruments, The Trumpets and Bass are in there though, they sound similar enough to make a Puppet Panic song out of.
@leviwellsysback You MUST have a program like FL Studio. In this case copy this soundfont on the FL Studio directory, more precisely on the soundfont folder.

Hey, I just want to say. This soundfont shouldn't be called "The Ultimate Megadrive Soundfont"
No, I'm not saying its bad or inaccurate, but it seems you've only used samples from Sonic games. Can you try adding in samples from other games? It'd be nice to have the Castlevania:Bloodlines horn in that. More drum samples couldn't hurt either.
The DS is CAPABLE, but MOST video games for the DS use sampled sounds and MIDI-like data to produce music. A DS soundfont wouldn't be that difficult to make if you knew which games used the rendered music rather than MIDI-like data.

@RecFreeMedia I'm using this soundfont with garageband, and the one instrument sounds fine but I can't access any of the other sounds (i.e. drums, brass, xylophone etc) Any advice? I'm dying to utilise this properly!

That certain crash is usually panned to the right (there are 2 crashes, one is center) in most soundfonts. It is panned all the way to the right because on the genesis, DAC samples were able to be played all the way on the left or right (Example: Sonic 3 Hydrocity Act 2), but were mostly played in the center.
kudos for the epic soundfont dude. hey dunno if anybody cud help me ere but any chance somebody cud list the instruments used in these compositions, idk if its me or what but i cant seem to find these instruments in the soundfont :S
The soundfont sounds great, and it'll probably work if you take into account all of the instrument limitations of the system. The first song you played, however, sounds like it belongs on the Turbografx-16 / PC-Engine (based on the notes, not the instruments).
It was written by the Genesis's limitations: 5 FM, 1 DAC, 2 PSG square, and 1 PSG noise (from what I hear, 3 squares and a noise channel are possible but rarely used. I'm not too sure about this though).
It is used commonly in game gear games (Sonic Chaos is game gear) (is the sound chip thats in the genesis in the game gear too?), but not very commonly in genesis games. I've never seen a genesis game that uses all 3 squares and noise.
Some Mega Drive Genesis games do use all 4 channels at the same time in the PSG sound chip which makes the music sound like Master System, it's mostly the American Genesis titles that do that like a game called ''BALLZ 3D'' a game developed by Accolade in 1994 which totally abuses the 8-bit PSG sound chip to it's limit and hardly makes use of the 16-bit Yamaha YM2612 at all.
Also the 4th white noise channel could also be used as a sampling channel just like the YM2612 DAC.
@SonicTheJackrabbit Yep. Alex Kidd The Lost Stars had that voice saying ''I'M THE MIRACLE BALL'' between each level and that came from the noise channel. Lemmings had the ''LET'S GO'' and ''OH NO'' and SEGA Chess also had some voice sampling on the Master System and so did Robocop VS The Terminator.
Everytime a sample was heard the screen was frozen at that exact moment when the voice was heard.
@SonicTheJackrabbit I don't think the two square waves were sampled in After Burner 2 but After Burner 2 did use the PSG noise channel for the sampled drums. The hi-hat cymbals were coming from the FM YM2612, strange set up ay? Usually the drums are FM and the hi-hats are PSG. In After Burner 2 it's reversed and I think that was so they could allow more speech in the FM DAC channel during the game.
No. I just checked with my VGM player. I disabled everything but the first two PSG channels. The Drums and orchestral hits came out of the first channel and sound effects like Gunfire, explosions and the man shouting "FIRE!" came out of the 2nd channel.
@SonicTheJackrabbit Hey you're right, I just tryed it on the real cartridge, I disabled the FM-YM2612 and the square wave channels are all sampling. I didn't know PSG square waves could sample? I only knew the 4th noise channel could.
Oh well you learn something new everyday. It's still a strange set up though, I mean the FM DAC was never used. Kind of wasted if you ask me.
@dissident93 Apparently it can. After Burner 2 on the Mega Drive Genesis uses the first and second PSG square wave channels for drums and voice sampling leaving the FM DAC channel completely unused.
I didn't know any of this until SonicTheJackrabbit told me.
@dissident93 I don't know? After Burner 2's audio programming is very weird and very different to most other Mega Drive Genesis soundtracks. Drums should be FM-DAC and hi-hats should be PSG but in After Burner 2 the drums are PSG and the hi-hats are FM.
I originally thought it was the PSG noise channel sampling the drums and the FM-DAC sampling the voices but the noise channel doesn't even get used and neither does the FM-DAC. It's the 1st and 2nd PSG square wave channels that are sampling.
I'm no expert at the 2 sound chips used in the Mega Drive console but I have studied them quite alot and to my knowledge the 8-bit SN76489 PSG sound chip which was used in the Master System and Game Gear aswell as being a back up sound chip in the Mega Drive had 3 square wave channels and 1 white noise channel which was also shared with the electric saw wave but i've noticed that some music composers on Master system were able to use 4 square waves and 1 white noise channel all at the same time.
I wanted to take a moment to thank you CONSIDERABLY for the fact that you invested so much time and patience into making this. I can still remember three years ago, when I was on a bit of a 4-op FM synthesis kick, and I was looking for soundfonts and MIDI players that would make my .mid files sound like they were being played on a YM2151/YM2612. The closest soundfont I could find just didn't capture that sound like yours has.
It has breathed LOADS of life into MANY a dull .mid for me. <:)
You have to use a separate program for making midis. To play the midis with the soundfont, you should use Synthfont if you don't have a soundblaster card with soundfont support.
I'd just like to go on-record here and say that this is a major contribution for retro geeks like me who have nothing but spare time on their hands. Thank you!
As a way to further thank you, I've linked back to this video in my Genesis-version "Hail from the Past" video, which is also a potential video response here.
I made a Sonic 16bit Medley with this !!!!
Please watch :D

The soundfont sounds great, and it'll probably work if you take into account all of the instrument limitations of the system. The first song you played, however, sounds like it belongs on the Turbografx-16 / PC-Engine (based on the notes, not the instruments).
tkwtube01 2 years ago
It was written by the Genesis's limitations: 5 FM, 1 DAC, 2 PSG square, and 1 PSG noise (from what I hear, 3 squares and a noise channel are possible but rarely used. I'm not too sure about this though).
RecFreeMedia 2 years ago
@RecFreeMedia You're correct, it is 3 squares and 1 noise, and actually it's used quite often. Here's an example: Sonic Chaos uses all three squares.
tkwtube01 1 year ago
It is used commonly in game gear games (Sonic Chaos is game gear) (is the sound chip thats in the genesis in the game gear too?), but not very commonly in genesis games. I've never seen a genesis game that uses all 3 squares and noise.

@RecFreeMedia

@Adam060756
Wait you mean like pre-recorded WAV audio samples like the DAC uses?
SonicTheJackrabbit 10 months ago
@SonicTheJackrabbit Yep. Alex Kidd The Lost Stars had that voice saying ''I'M THE MIRACLE BALL'' between each level and that came from the noise channel. Lemmings had the ''LET'S GO'' and ''OH NO'' and SEGA Chess also had some voice sampling on the Master System and so did Robocop VS The Terminator.
Everytime a sample was heard the screen was frozen at that exact moment when the voice was heard.
Adam060756 10 months ago
@Adam060756
Funny how you should say that, considering After Burner 2 on the Genesis used the two Square Wave channels on the PSG for PCM samples. :P
SonicTheJackrabbit 10 months ago
@SonicTheJackrabbit I don't think the two square waves were sampled in After Burner 2 but After Burner 2 did use the PSG noise channel for the sampled drums. The hi-hat cymbals were coming from the FM YM2612, strange set up ay? Usually the drums are FM and the hi-hats are PSG. In After Burner 2 it's reversed and I think that was so they could allow more speech in the FM DAC channel during the game.
Adam060756 10 months ago
@Adam060756
No. I just checked with my VGM player. I disabled everything but the first two PSG channels. The Drums and orchestral hits came out of the first channel and sound effects like Gunfire, explosions and the man shouting "FIRE!" came out of the 2nd channel.
SonicTheJackrabbit 10 months ago
@SonicTheJackrabbit Hey you're right, I just tryed it on the real cartridge, I disabled the FM-YM2612 and the square wave channels are all sampling. I didn't know PSG square waves could sample? I only knew the 4th noise channel could.
Oh well you learn something new everyday. It's still a strange set up though, I mean the FM DAC was never used. Kind of wasted if you ask me.
Adam060756 10 months ago
@Adam060756 The Genesis PSG could sample?
dissident93 10 months ago
@dissident93 Apparently it can. After Burner 2 on the Mega Drive Genesis uses the first and second PSG square wave channels for drums and voice sampling leaving the FM DAC channel completely unused.
I didn't know any of this until SonicTheJackrabbit told me.
Adam060756 10 months ago
@Adam060756 Oh. But why would someone use three channels for a sample, when they could simply use the DAC?
dissident93 10 months ago
@dissident93 I don't know? After Burner 2's audio programming is very weird and very different to most other Mega Drive Genesis soundtracks. Drums should be FM-DAC and hi-hats should be PSG but in After Burner 2 the drums are PSG and the hi-hats are FM.
I originally thought it was the PSG noise channel sampling the drums and the FM-DAC sampling the voices but the noise channel doesn't even get used and neither does the FM-DAC. It's the 1st and 2nd PSG square wave channels that are sampling.
Adam060756 10 months ago
@Adam060756 I'm gonna check out that soundtrack. haha
dissident93 10 months ago
@RecFreeMedia
Revenge of Shinobi actually did use the noise channel, but they were just kicks, not hats like in other Genesis games.
SonicTheJackrabbit 10 months ago

I've downloaded it, but there isn't anything that came with it to let me make tracks with the Mega Drive soundchip. Am I missing something? =(
