happy frier has been properly chastised by the rest of us not studying for a degree in surreal art studies. i wonder what he'd have to say about terry gilliam's animations.
probably that they are highly derivative, and quite silly! missing the fact that they are brilliant, and much more fun to look at.
I really don't understand how people can't relate this to Svankmajer, it is so blatantly obvious it was inspired by his work solely on the use of hand movement, the eyes, the sculpting of the head and the obscure places the mouth and teeth appear, not to mention the surrealism.
Anyone who disagrees it would be interesting to know why, this is a Year 10 pupil!! I found out about Svankmajer in my first year of Uni for Petes sake.
Such a great talent, I hope so much they carried on in this area.
i would of (when the cat when in to the rain water from the cloud) i would of had that sun heat up the water to boil so when the cat went in it, it would cook and then the teeth would eat it...
This is great. I know people are looking for meaning and whatnot- but I have to at least commend you on your skill. I for sure could never do something as awesome.
I can't find a "meaning" per se, but I have to make it clear that obviously, your education didn't help much if it failed to remind you that meaning is what you make it. Humans are meaning-making machines and we put meaning into everything based on the way we see the world. @happyfrier Degrees doesn't mean much when it comes to art.
You have a lot of talent - the scultpting and attention to detail are great. Investing in a tripod is about the only piece of advice I'd have for you - and I'm even loath to say that, as your level of meticulousness far exceeds mine :-)
I agree with Morgan Manno on the topic of association (even inspired) with Jan Švankmajer as described as being a string of experimental clips while, Jan Švankmajer is based on, again, depth of story. Also, I see no likeness (which isn't a problem) to his work including his use of exaggerated sound effects. Personally, I enjoy the film work here however, it would have been nice to simply have Fort Minor's music as the sound track. Golly good, though. Just a little critique.
I think this is good but shouldn't be associated with jan svankmajer, his animations have story and depth... this is just a string of experimental clips.
@TarantinoQ82 Who says it's 'related with' Svankmajer? It says it's 'inspired' by, which is totally legitimate. Being an inspiration for art is likely very flattering for him, and this art isn't the first to be inspired by him. Hell, Tim Burton was heavily inspired by Svankmajer.
Great Effort! I applaud your tenacity to see it through... also it seems a bit contrived, there was no message to tie anything together... could have been just a bit of fun with stop motion. Nice to see people are at least doing something!
Woah! who made this? this is really good! The music fit the animation really well!
Also, not to sound snobby meself lol, not all surreal stop animation has to have a deep meaning. I always thought surreal was something that didnt have a meaning.
@happyfrier It must be nice to be so educated. Years of exposure to art study and the easiest thing you find to do is ridicule a teenager's work? As a maths phd it would be easy for me to ridicule most people's appreciation of numbers and maths, but I don't because it would make me a superior-sounding asshole. Instead I choose to teach and try to help, not disparage.
@happyfrier why everything has to have any "clear" meaning... is not problem of the artist that spectator can't understand... even if it's kind of gallimatic, i think (as J.L. Borges) is enough that artist know what he is doing.
is jan svankmajer

Also, I suggest for those of you who disagree or those who enjoyed this fantastic commemoration you watch three videos entitled,
1. Jan Svankmajer - Food Pt:1
2. Jan Svankmajer - tma/svetlo/tma
3. Jan Svankmajer - Virile Games

Wow. A surrealist major who takes everything too seriously... Boy, would Dali be proud of you. Don't be such an art snob.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Is this supposed to be a joke video?
Svankmjaer's shorts have some meaning to them... This, this is just some stop animation.
I apologise for my ignorance if there is some deeper concept, however, I feel it may be too well hidden if a surrealist major cannot understand it...
