1) Setting Knife in Clamp: insert blade about ¼” to ½”
2) Closing the Clamp: Leave front screw loose so the back screw can torque up and follow the angle of the blade.
3) Finding angle: Run a marker along the leading edge & see if you are removing the color (ie steel). If not, the factory angle is a greater. Jump up one slot and try again or grab the coarse hone and get to work.
4) Ceramics are best for final polishing. Diamonds are best for coarse work
For people who like to sharpen or know what they're doing, they'll use sharpening stones (Like Smith's tri-stone) and such. For beginners who don't want to risk any damage to the knife, they'll use this method. I personally don't think either method is best, but as long as the blades are sharpened by stone, and finished by using a strop or leather, it's fine. This is in my opinion.
what people have failed to mention is that once you have the proper blade angle set all you need is a butchers steel (as in, don't remove any material with it - just re-define the edge that's rolled over) to get back to shaving sharp. my pocket knife gets used daily, but I only have to hit it with the lansky about once a year to keep it sharp - the rest of the time I just hit it with a butchers steel a couple times a month.
@jbauch357 For maintenance, I like to use the Lansky Croc Sticks like in the 4 Rod Turnbox that comes with medium and fine ceramics. Its more effective than the butcher steel because the medium ceramic will remove a bit of steel and do a better job with no hassle.
i think that people ALLWAYS complain to much! i don´t own any sharpening system yet, but i have A LOT to sharpen like chisels, kitchen knifes, swiss army knifes and so on. to bad that you can´t sharpen chisels with this system!
Problems with this system: 1 very difficult to use safely and accurately w/o mount 2. does not easily accommodate knives w/ tapering spine width 3. rods are never completely straight 4. my yellow hone's hole is too large, so rod won't tighten properly. . . I contacted Lansky about this twice and have yet to receive a response. I'm looking for another system and will sell this one on ebay cheap when I do.
Sharpening a blade 95% technique and 5% what kind of system is being used. This system removing the need for the user to have technique. Sharpening by hand, using proper technique and system can get you an edge that you can shave with - but it's MAJOR overkill to sharpen a kitchen knife that much. This tool, and tools like it, will get a kitchen knife more than sharp enough.
lol i sharpen my knives on what ever is around me that i can use nail file, card bord, lether belt, and another knife but 4 the lazzy ppl that dont want 2 take there time 2 learn the skill this wold be perfect
I've just bought this, do you have to use the honing oil every time you sharpen with it or only when it clogges up? In this video it says to use the oil when it becomes clogged up, but in the instructions that came with it says that I must use oil every time I sharpen.
this is truly one great sharpener got mine to day it realy is one great sharpening system . i cant sharpen to save my life but this all ready got my knives shaving sharp.
I used to own that lansky thingy but now it's in the trash. Get a spyderco sharpmaker instead. It only took me 10 min to get a SOG flash 2 knife shaving sharp which is quite a feat considering how dull the SOG come out from the factory.
i bought mine 9 years ago, it still works i would not recommend it for chef knifes over 6inches (because of the length of the blade, the angle change too much towards the tip) but for everything else it works miracles
did anyone ever try the sapphire ? when i bought it diamond was the finest
This dummy is doing it wrong. He needs to hold the hone between the knife edge and the guide rod hole. The way he's doing it allows the guide rod to move up and down in the hole, causing the angle to change.
I've had mine for 10 years, the diamond hones are great as well. The mount is great as well. Check out Lansky's two sided diamond paddle sharpeners too.
i guess i'm lucky, i've never been cut sharpening any knife, with numerous methods...knock on wood.
knife sharpening is an art and should not be left to a jig. Theses thing will get a clean angle on a knife but you then have to find it on your steel. And did you see how he sharpened it? TWO angles the teeth on that knife are going everywhere!
i have the smith system pretty much the same but you you have to practice at either and rather and do that i just use a good whet rock and you can really fine tune your edge this way
Actually, a better way to see if a knife is sharp enough is try to shave some hair off of your arm. It takes a sharper blade to shave hair off of your arm than it does to cut paper.
@boonie1994 Yes, unlike with a whetstone, this will work with a recurve blade. The edge angle will change slightly, but it's not really noticeable. The best way to sharpen a recurve blade knife is with crock sticks or something similar such as Spyderco sharpmaker.
I have a Lansky kit. It works ok, but the pieces are too small for my liking. I can never get an edge that will shave with the Lansky tool. Maybe it's me, not the tool.
I bought a lansky pocket sharpener with a carbine preset edge and a ceramic edge and it sucks. I tried but after seeing how sharp one can get a knife on a benchstone it makes my two preset stones look like a waste of money. Don't go with preset angles whatever you do, i had to find that out the hard way. Though i don't like their preset stone sytems this one seems to work. Still im gonna go and buy a crock stick set and a wet stone.
I borrowed this product to try out and I find it works pretty well but it is time consuming. The results seem o.k. but then I haven't compared it to anything yet. Friends have told me I'm wasting my time and I should be using a diamond wet stone. What's a good test to see how sharp you have your knife?
get a piece of paper a cut it with your knife. The result, if its sharp, should be like a hot knife through butter. Almost like the paper is falling of and the blade should cleanly slice all the way through.
I can vouch for that, I just sharpened a knife for the first time in my life on my own using one of these kits my dad bought YEARS ago and never used. I modified their instructions a bit, but it worked well enough to please me, and I've been USING knives outdoors as long as I can remember.

The trained human hand can not only hold a specific angle with barely any variation at all, but can also return to that angle after sharpening is halted for a short time.
Doing it as directed,maybe defective.
