I have an audition for this next week in San Fransisco! STOKED! my favorite show of all time. Hey whats with the bruises all over the MC? I have never noticed that...?
@totaljekkie In an interview, I believe Alan Cumming said he wanted the Emcee to have track marks all over him, since he believed the character was a huge druggie.
@WhinnieLover28 well i am in cabaret right now im sure u go to nkhs and every cabaret club during this time period had its own distinct look and we weren't trying to copy another productions image our particular club was one that goes from riches to rags because of nazi influence just sayin btw
LOL My school did this play, and.. i'm stunned by how different it is already. The school's cabaret girls looked more like legit cabaret girls, but i think i still like this version more~
Alan Cumming has mastered the art of being very sexual without being sexy... At least, in conventional terms. His portrayal of the Emcee probably isn't what most people think of when they hear the word... And yet... *swoon*
When I was about 13 (now 22) I was obsessed with Cabaret & Alan Cumming. I would listen to the soundtrack every single day for months. I still love Alan. I am so glad I have finally found this!!
I watch this almost every day, and if not, at least more than once a week/month. I am in love with Alan's interpretation of the MC. He is the embodiment of what I want in a man :3
one of the few instances where the original is eclipsed by a remake. AC re-invents the character geniously to fabulous effect. His version of "Two Ladies" far surpasses Joel Gray's in terms of sheer hot sexiness, and he projects such a fierce confidence in his role that wasn't quite there in 1972 (surprised?) JG's feminine elements were playful and almost silly. AC throws it in your face and makes you eat it up. His Master of Ceremonies would make a great stripper!!
@djdatafreak Sally isn't meant to be able to to sing. The actress who plays her can sing wonderfully, but the character is meant to be not great at singing.
@1957arm Joel Gray and Liza Minnelli richly deserved their Oscars for their film Cabaret roles: their interpretations and talents were uniquely theirs. We're all richer for the variety of actors in and productions of any drama--we see a universe of possible interpretations and renderings. This Broadway Cabaret seems great--it more suggests the seediness and debauchery than prior productions in tamer times dared. Yet I can believe Jill & Judi were great & 'd love to see their Sallys & Cabarets .
What's that thing he keeps doing with his hands, the one fist on his head, the other with splayed fingers above the first? Is that, like, symbolic of something, or just a weird dance move he repeats?
@josh1492 well yeah, this is a shitty little night club in a shitty corner of a city in a shitty time. the point is that people tried to get their last kicks in any way they could. its why he keeps the joy going to avoid the truth allllll the way to the last second.
I really like how the cabaret is very representative of Germany, how it seemed inviting mid 30's with its tourism and hosting the olympics. and how they are "happy" to have you in their country. I LOVE this musical for that very reason.
Weirdly, I prefer blonde Sally Bowles over brunette Sally Bowles. I think the blonde hair accentuates her personality more, and sort of makes the atmosphere just a smidge less dark...idk, just a weird thought...
I love it how the audience is like part of the kit kat cafe's clients with the red light lamps ont het ables XD (by the way... next fall, the theatre at my home town is playing Cabaret the msuical (this!) I am SOOOOO getting tickets!!!!! (too bad Alan cant be there XDDD ))
@Oiyuki Mr. Cumming knows how to handle that train whistle. At the same time, does it foreshadow (trains, cattle cars, to) death camps in any way? Just to go with the theme of the whole musical, especially the last scene!
I'm keeping him. (whoa wait that's my line! I'm the excitable one! Not you!) I care not. I want him. (Well no duh I mean so do I but still don't suddenly get all energetic on me it freaking me out!) I apologise. I can not help it.
I think the chorus is playing it a little too ironical...It works best if it's just like they are the real thing brought back to life, seen through time. Not rolling their eyes at their own performance or trying to dance badly on purpose.
@morwenmur Because all musical reimaginings change things. I've seen plenty of changes happen in stuff like Les Mis and Phantom. Word switches or changes. They're glaring sometimes I guess.
Alan Cumming always reminds of the kind of guy who would wait just beyond the light of a street lamp and just sit there...he is the creeper of creeps and I love him!
Why do we, as the new generations always think that what we've been exposed at present was the worthwhile experience? I think Alan Cumming's interpretation is great; he excels at portraying this new Emcee and is sheltered by the new concept in direction. I applaud both efforts, but NOTHING, no matter how good it is will ever top or compare to the original creation.
@thejokerslastlaugh Why? Because the original creation encompasses all the genius of the original creative team. The conception of the original Cabaret was immaculate, unflawed. New interpretations are always welcome, but Joel Grey's Emcee cannot be topped. And in one word, Joel Grey's portrayal was incomparable.
@chrissic21 Joel Gray originated the role on Broadway directed by Hal Prince and Choreographed by Ron Field. Later Fosse would take over and create a fabulous film that included Gray's Emcee because of it's mesmerizing qualities ON STAGE. I NEVER referred to the movie.
