Just spotted a Quebec flag in the back of that picture at 2:12
I was vaguely aware we had a branch of the IWW, but I'd never seen a banner or flag for it, even in protests involving both unions and red and black flags.
#1) Last count, we had at least 115 million members in the US (they just don't know it yet). #2) Since 1905, there has not been one single day that the IWW and its members have not been out on the street fighting the bosses, supporting their fellow workers, and trying to educate the working class of the power that it possesses. And well keep on doing it 'till the cows come home.
Hey, I got a question. Guy in the black shirt, red tie, and what appears to be a sunglass monocle; what's his name? I assume he is someone influential.
nice vid. check out the wonderful 'Graphic History" of the Wobblies, featuring comic strips by Harvey Pekar, Peter Kuper, Seth Tobocman, Jeffrey Lewis, Sabrina Jones and others...
@dufvasven We got lazy and apathetic. The bosses are looking for ways to corner us every second. When we make some gains in the workplace we can't just sit back on our laurels, we have to keep fighting because you know they are going to keep coming after us!
@dufvasven The workers have endured hell these years because Regan and Thatcher crushed them in the late 70's. But the class war is far from over and its coming back.
When I heard on NPR that he had died I screamed. I had the good fortune to see one of his concerts it was so funny my sides were hurting from laughing so much
IWW What we stand for: MORE WAGES Better Working Conditions Shorter Hours EMANCIPATION S O L I D A R I T Y Abolition of the Wage System Abolition of Unemployment Shop Democracy GOOD PAY OR BUM WORK Think it over: Joint the ONE BIG UNION, fight for the full product of your labor!
If only someday, workers get it and undestand the power we could have if we unite. Even when I explain it to folks, they don't care, as long as they can save an extra dime, they will shop at Wal-Mart. We need to find a way to get our message to people...it's not working!
Solidarity on the left! I live in a "right to work state" (if I could roll my eyes on the internet, by golly I would), and our workers are screwed out of a decent life constantly. Louisiana needs better unions!

Sorry, I'm new to You Tube....Bruce"Utah"Phillips. I should not have used his name.. I have some of his early stuff on vinyl..My error.........I've just always called him Bruce..I checked years ago to see who penned the Flatt & Scruggs cover, Rock salt & Nails and it was he...I'll try to follow the format as I learn this system.. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.....Randy
OH, No worries man. I figured "Utah" wasn't his real name, so it's obviously me who was ignorant. I can't say I know much of his history, and only know of the albums sold through IWW.
Hey RedCeltic, I too wondered who "Bruce" was & I heard him on Pacifica Radio for years
in this part of the country. Here's a little bit info from Wheat Wiki:"... took on the nickname U. Utah Phillips in honor of his favorite country singer, T. Texas Tyler. Phillips was active in labor and leftist politics in conservative Utah during the 1960s and ran for the U.S. Senate in 1968 on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket.
"He received more than 6,000 votes; not enough to be elected, but enough to get himself blacklisted in the state. Unable to find employment because of his radical views, he left Utah in 1969 and hopped freight trains to get to his coffee house and campus gigs."

Yep, everybody should just give up because progress requires struggle and sometimes we lose. No use fighting greed and inequality. We're all screwed.
Go home and hide under the covers. I'm going the the next fight.

Damn right he's influential. He's a working stiff just like the rest of us.
Benjammin911 2 years ago 3
Couldn't influence working stiffs meaningfully unless he was a working stiff himself. But who is he?
