@mmankt Either way, don't be such an ass about it. When you're better at something than someone, you don't look down on them or give them shit. You encourage them to learn and give them advice. That is the mature thing to do.
@DrunkenWaffle lol u take jokes really bad. u're the one dropping the glove by saying 'go make better'. i didn't give u any shit, looked down on you or anything like that - just stated the fact that calling an animated sprite a smoke particle system is funny and a terrible idea. i hope that u'll keep perusing your game making hobby. cheers.
People who dislike this video have no idea how much time creating actual game takes. People who have no idea about any kind of programming at all. Good job Alan explosions are awesome no matter how they are used lol
@YouKondziu Or they just don't like the game he's making. I can make this kind of games in just half a hour. I just dont post crap on YouTube, especially if it isn't finished. He's certainly bragging about the smoke explosions and parallax while the gameplay sucks alot. It's like playing tetris with crysis 2 graphics. It just doesn't suit.
@tibbert1234 1) Half hour? That's physically impossible unless you simply copy finished engine code and the sprite frames were already made in advance. 2) "Isn't finished" + "gameplay sucks" -?- ... the title implicitly indicates it's a HAL game-engine - not a game - so we would expect to see test-code not the actual gameplay. Ppl post their progress all the time for the sake of those interested. Why so many ppl feel the need to object to this?
@tibbert1234 Depends on how you make it. If you're using Game Maker, then maybe. But if you're using a combination of SDL and C++, then no. He's using SDL, an API that gives you a huge amount of control over the program that you make. The game may not look impressive, but it's definitely not "30 minute work".
Overall, game development isn't necessarily about the quality of the game, it's what you learn from doing it.
@YouKondziu I do know how hard it is to create a game and still I personally didn't like the style (and the quality a little) of the game, but what really brought the video down was the music, but that's just my opinion...
I always have resisted box2d because I would have to use directdraw or OpenGL.
Box2d requires the ability to rotate sprites around arbitrary points. That way boxes can strike geometry. To the best of my knowledge SDL doesn't have sprite rotation to accommodate box2d. Have you found away around this?
@rodentwizard SDL doesn't have sprite zoom/rotation built in but that's where SGE or SDL_gfx come in. They both have the ability to rotate/zoom (rotozoom) images.
@AlanMMW if you could share mine is tomerl(at)tomasbrazao(dot)com, it's really good (not kiding if i was i wouldn't even give you my email... duh!) heh JK!

Achei uma coisa um pouco ruim. A velocidade do jogo está muito baixa.

@rodentwizard
hi, with SDL_gfx it's possible. use the function rotzoom.
AlanMMW 1 year ago
@AlanMMW doesn't that only rotate around the middle?
rodentwizard 1 year ago
@rodentwizard SDL doesn't have sprite zoom/rotation built in but that's where SGE or SDL_gfx come in. They both have the ability to rotate/zoom (rotozoom) images.
ldicker 1 year ago
@rodentwizard Also have a look at pyglet and/or rabbyt. They are simplified API's atop of OpenGL.
Btw, using 3D acceleration for 2D graphics is sort of how it's done these days since the 3D is faster than 2D in a modern GPU.
hornetpalooza 1 year ago
@rodentwizard Conversely, you can assign Box2D bodies to not rotate. Check docs for SetFixedRotation.

@rodentwizard says: "I always have resisted box2d because I would have to use directdraw or OpenGL"
>What? What does physics engine have to do with rendering? Just because there is debug draw available, nobody says you have to use it.
Viking009 1 year ago
@rodentwizard OpenGL can rotate objects easily with glRotate (must be called befora draw the object).
srogeriof 10 months ago
@rodentwizard
There is also SFML. Which is way better than SDL imo.

No offense, but graphics are worthless if the gameplay isn't good, you should dumb down your graphics so that they match the gameplay,
I know that this isn't the final thing or anything, but I am just trying to be helpful :)

Lua can load resources as sound files and person images.
too can write the AI, calling C++ functions using Luabind
and more...

objection! it's true that lua is better (a beast) for embed but for RAD, no embed, i prefer python u other scripting language instead lua.
