  • @5:00 "doesn't leave him much time for his concubines, not to speak of the affairs of state..." ...dry wit at its best...

  • What a great acting by Sir Richard Attenborough...mind blowing!!

  • excellent...don't get it why tht officer general whtever was soo amazed abt concobines...didn't thy hav kings who used to hav concobines in hundreds...

  • @6:52 is interesting. Weston is struck with disbelief, amazement, grief, unwarrantedness.

I feel that he had soft corner for the king...

  • @blurr

and FINALLY the British Raj Rule of India must not be dismissed as the rule of "just another invader in a long line of invaders" because they are back in the region, militarily with 10,000 troops in Afghanistan and military advisors in Pakistan.....doing exactly what the East India Company were doing harvesting Heroin/Opium out of that wretched country, under the pretext of fighting "terrorism".

  • @blurr

and its people...separate clubs; social networking...whereas you will find the previous invaders integrated and mixed with Indian society extensively at all levels, to the point of losing their original identity.

and took the loot to London, turning it into a magnificent city. 3) Killed 30 million Indians through sheer greed and mismanagement ......no other "invader" has achieved such numbers 4) Accentuated the division of Indian society far more sharply...under "divide and rule". 5) Created an inferiority complex within the Indian Anglocised elite, through the Maclauey Doctrine which still adversely affects the leadership and governance/government of South Asian countries 6) They had a loathing

Granted that this is a casual sight where we post without much care to detail and actual facts, but I must correct you on the fact of India's overall wealth pre- East India Company/Raj colonialism (1757--1947). India in 1750 was the second richest nation on earth (China number 1) accounting for 25% of manufacturing in the world.

  • @blurr1000

India over 3,500 years has been invaded by many races such as the Aryans from Central Asia, Persians, Greeks, Kushans, Saka, White Huns, the Turkic/Afghans, BUT unlike these invaders from the near abroad who assimilated and became Indians.......15% of Indians have Iranian genes....Raj Kapoor et al, 1) The British never assimilated into Indian society, unlike the above 2) They looted the country systematically...$1--2 trillion worth of Indian assets.

  • terrific attenborough and Tom Alter exchange

  • A ggod time to revisit this movie. The British marched into a rich India and left it a poor and racially divided nation. They looted, raped and tortured the freedom fighters.. Looks like their Karma is finally catching up.

  • @KDKAPOOR It was poor before the British, Dutch. French, or Portuguese. It had

1000 years of invasions and conquests before the major British conquests.

History is not known in India.

  • @KDKAPOOR

If it were more realistic the Burtonesque "Captain Weston" character would have another family on the side and be running a few businesses off the books...

  • I am with sdy0z. There is nothing wrong being a patriotic. But that should not allow us to become too narrow minded. Slumdog is a good movie. NO Bollywood movie ever portrayed Mumabi in such an excellent and realistic way....Let the world see India in all its diversity..We have nothing to hide like US(37 millions were utterly poor in 2005) or any other developed countries.

  • Dada 9.12 keyal korben

  • The subject matter is relevant historically given that there are now 10,000 British troops in Afghanistan, doing what they did in Bengal under the East India Company, harvesting Opium, and of course the Americans with their neo-imperialism. There are also American and some British 5,000 military personnel in Pakistan, and they are increasing their numbers propping extremely corrupt regimes under Karzai and Zardari....

We must not let history repeat itself, under guise of American neo-colonialis

  • @Mostaqueify

Wow! Your post is very valuable and important to ponder over. Well done friend!

  • Voice of Amithabh..the legend

  • i think movies like these deserve oscar. this movie has everything - politics, social problems, excellent indian classical dance and music, excellent story by premchand. oscaar shud not go to third rate movies like slumdog

  • i agree, i hate slumdog .

  • I agree wholeheartedly

  • this movie particularly did not get oscar , but Ray did. and danny can not come close to Ray

  • Oscar award is inferior since its inception. Why bother about that sort of recognition.

  • slumdog is NOT a third rate movie - they show the truth as it is...for some people though accepting the truth is a big problem....this movie is a classic but slumdog is also good in its own rights....i think you need to open your eyes and also the windows of your mind if you know what I mean.

  • there are many positive side of indian socity which did not get exposer.

  • :) You are rite my friend, we have to show those possitive sides.
