  • Keybord ninjas really need to understand that no move is 100% sure of success, so even if you know a counter move to some technique doesn't mean that the technique is shit. Every move has a counter move and every counter move has a counter move...

  • Erik is the man.

  • he can realy do things like that in real figths because he haves a very fast mind

  • I've just started practicing some locks and have some questions on ankle lock. During training I've noticed two things, first it is very hard to go with successfull ankle lock. It requires a lot of work. Am I doing something wrong, or its just lack of practice? Second, even with successful ankle lock its very easy to defend against it with heel kick on face or pulling opponent and then punching. Again, is there some way to prevent heel kicking and pull+punch when I'm doing ankle lock?

  • @yarpenzirgin81 in practice you are taught to do ankle locks nice and slow so that you don't hurt your partner if you apply any ankle lock as you would in a reall street fight or full speed it is just like doing an armbar that joint will snap real fast. again if you apply them full speed the defense is real hard to do and the ankle will snap. and if you do the technique properly it is suppose to prevent from the punch aspect

  • STEP OVER THE ASS!!!!

  • 0:31 looks kind of kinky.

    Reminds me of BJJ

  • Isn't it funny that youtubers are always questioning techniques from guys like Erik freaking Paulson? I wonder if any of them would do so to his face...

  • Turn his head...step over the ass.....LOL!!

  • when you garb your wrist like that in 0:16 he's gonna go for an arm crush,

he wont leen back like that untill he gets the arm crush.

  • Ankle locks are cheap, but if everyone at a gym agrees on this and wont train them and just leave their legs out trying to catch guard and work sweeps all the while they arent learning how to properly defend against them.

  • LOL at 1:16

  • this is wackk!

  • "step over his...ASS! URG"

    LMFAOOOOOOOOOO

  • And then he pulls out! lol

  • I can find plenty that got ko'd trying to apply wrist control on sweaty opponents. The arms are smaller and faster while the legs are big and slower. Plus anklelocks are the least expected sub of all the techs. My friend got of an achilles from a kneebar in his first match at NAGA in like 10secs. and he got a heel hook from mount also but that was like 6mins. Also, if your ankle or knee is broken then you have to use crutches and I would've prefer a elbow brace over those horrid things anyday.

  • Leg lock are amazing. Hardly anyone can fight with thier ankle broken (or knee) I would prefer them over armlocks any day. Plus holding a leg to me is alot easier than holding an arm. I've seen people man up to a broken arm but a leg you can even walk away let alone run away.

  • spoken truly like someone who has never grappled a day in their life.

  • what are you talking about I grapple all the time

  • what does 'holding on to a leg is easier than holding on to an arm' mean.

seriously, find a competent grappler that agrees with that statement in any way.

  • Just reading some of the comments, Erik also trained under Larry Hartsel who is JKDs top catch hooker god rest is soul. So like every great martial artist Erik crossed trained catch wrestling and BJJ, there are more comonalities than differences

  • hahaha. step over the ass

  • knlk

  • I'm a catch wrestler and never had trouble with BJJ guys on the mat. BJJ guys honestly think that brazilians invented grappling. Jiu Jitsu made it;s way to brazil when the Japanese started immigrating there. That's how the Gracie family got Jiiu Jitsu, Helio's brother helped the japanese start out in brazil and was taught Jiu Jitsi in return. These moves are thousands of years old and no style can claim them as their own. guys like paulson get overlooked just because they don't do BJJ

  • paulson is a bjj blackbelt under the machados

  • owned hahaha

  • fool.

  • Comment removed

  • woah, now!

    keyboard warrior!

  • i agree with you man

  • I've just gotten a lot of negative feed back from the instructors. Because I made one of their favorites look human, and defeated so many others with CSW, I'm making it look like BJJ isn't the only thing. And to them, that's terrible. Though Imust admit, CSW does borrow a lot from BJJ. Particuarly in the Guard. So don't worry, Famarsha. Just my high school style temper and mouth lashing out. Not anyone's fault. I feel bad for being that harsh.

  • If there is one thing I am sick to death of, it's you Jiu jitsu cultists trying DESPERATELY to belittle any other style. I used to do bjj, but after meeting people like you, I felt disgusted to be even related to it, and I trained in CSW under Christen Jensen. i've tapped out various BJJ guys, including some that claim to have trained under the gracies. How's that make you feel? You have no respect for anything. I'm glad we have GOOD people and submissionists like Mr. Paulson, not jerks like you

  • Easy man, some BJJ guys like me love grappling arts, every one has something to offer and Erik Style is great no mather what someone says.

  • Ehh....maybe you got a point. Yeah, i do believe everyone has something to offer. And deep down, I have respect for BJJ. Their ground control and expertise at armlocks and choke holds is unigue. Guess I overreacted, I'm just tired of people not taking me serious just because I don't do THEIR art. Sorry, man. No disrepect intended to the good BJJ with good attitudes out there.

  • No problem I know stupid BJJ guys too, thank God I can go to an academy where everyone"S welcome.

  • I train under Renzo in NYC and we take whatever works and apply it to our game. It's a new age for BJJ/submission wrestling and sorry to hear that you've ran into people that are not a part of it.....

  • Ahhh, it's mostly from the Army. Matt Larsen and about every "combatives" instructor insists that BJJ is the best and anything else is an inferior style. I'm not popular because the Instructors claim a Level 4 combativbes is so skilled in GJJ, he cannot be beat. I tapped out four of them. It's pissed them off BAD. In my only loss, I gained more respect in that than any of my victories. As one of the Sergeants said, "You're the first person to make him look human". That was my company's "champ".

  • this is dumb....anyone who is advanced in jiu jitsu would just set up traingle after you pull your arm out especially if you pull your arm out slow...even if he cant pull your head once he starts triangle the omoplata is also there

  • All about who has the faster reflexes, better timing, and how dedicated the person is to the armbar.

  • So how come he became somebody in MMA-type events if his technique is dumb? What did you win?

  • Jiu Jitsu guys are constantly prone to the ankle lock.

  • Yeah but ankle locks are fucking cheap

  • But they effective.

  • In the art of fighting is a move actually considered cheap if you fall for it? Especially if you fall for it!?

  • yeah because they're easy to do hard to get out of and anyone can do them

  • this video was useless. its not getting out of an armbar unless he actually has u in it. and the best way to get out of 1 is to suprise hit the knee joint thats on ur stomach/chest, itll give u an opening. or u can squeeze his hand with ur fingers wich only works if u have strong fingers (finger pushups work)

  • your not making much sense

  • yea Erik Paulson has NO idea what he's talking about.. I think you, sir, are useless. also, stupid. how about that?

  • stop replying to mad old shit...

  • but if its that easy to get out of armbar why dont pple do it when they kno they are about to get an armbar?

  • The problem is that the arm bar happens so fast in those fights that it is hard to pull off a move like this. But it is good to know that there are counters.

    Timing is key.

  • o i see; i tried to do this move on my friend right in the arm bar position it is too hard cuz u have to sorta push him down and my friend weighed less than me and it was hard

  • There's actually more advantage if you have more weight.

  • yes, gennosuke doesn't seem to know that

  • Erik Paulson sure loves he's knee locks. The majority of his submissions on youtube end with a knee lock of some sort.

  • i wish it were that easy..

  • sweet. i think i'll try that out next time i roll.

  • lol at 0:57 step over his ass

  • Is it necessary to grab the opposite shoulder and crossface? It seems like I could accomplish the same thing by underhooking the head (something that I am more comfortable with and I feel would be harder to escape).

  • Paulson is a great coach.

  • very good tecniqe ...is simple and clear

  • Very impressive techniques!

  • You the man, Erik

  • personally I think it's better to pass the guard at that point, rather than risk the guy coming up and defending the footlock and ending up on top."position before submission"

  • im gonna try that on my sensai at BJJ (Brazilian Jui Jitsu)

  • when someone is on their back it isnt that easy to regain your base. also as soon as a person feels that they are loosing the arm they will most likey square their hips back up to regain gaurd.

  • "and you step over his ass" lol

  • lol, i laughed at that too.

  • does he kiss his mother with that mouth?lol

  • It's not really worthless. It's not a lot more than stacking the guy and clearin the arm then going for a straight ankle lock.

  • The guy applying the arm lock isn't applying any leg pressure across blondies torso. He's not using his hips and he's not securing the wrist properly. This wouldn't work on anyone who knew how to properly apply an armbar submission. Another thing is if someone rolls up you use your leg to crank them acroos there throat breaking their momentum and balance.

    Worthless.

  • that is totally up to the skill level of the practitioner. As are most things...there is no cookie cutter response.

Worthless if you choose to make it worthless.

  • I think it would be worthless against a very skilled guy, but lots of good moves are. I just started doing BJJ and MMA and I put an ankle lock on a black belt in my first grappling class. Because I'm a natural? NO! Because I was a LOT stronger than he was, BJJ is good stuff, but it's not the be all and end all, and it's not worthless.

  • I disagree that the first technique wouldn't work. The stack is a basic armbar defense and the leglock is just a follow up in place of the standard guard pass that would come after the arm is pulled out. However you can prevent the stack by grabbing the same side leg with one of your arms. This is the style armbar that Dave Camarillo and Eddie Bravo employ. But back to the video.. The last two leglocks set ups look pretty rediculious...

  • Sorry dude the first tech does work, got it against a BBJ black belt just last night.

  • You obviously know nothing about blondie aka Erik Paulson. He's one of the best grapplers in the world. Ask anyone of the guys he has trained. Randy Couture, Sean Sherk, Dan Henderson, Josh Barnett, Babalu, Cub Swanson, Frank Trigg, and the list goes on and on

  • I dont think it matters on who is the best grappler because it is something that just cannot be answered in some respects. Many will be quick to pick names and say "He/She is the best" as they won this compeition or this title, etc. To put things in better perspective -- there are many great grappler's in the world and you can learn many things from them. Erik Paulson is DEFINITELY ONE OF THOSE GUYS!! He is a walking book of knowledge and if I got a chance to roll with him, I would take it!

  • nonsense

  • not to mention he was a shooto, and shootwrestling champ for a long time. anyone who doubts erik's knowledge, just buy any one of his tapes...it's no fluff..like 5 of anyone else's tapes.

  • ... and that also, over his achievements! I ran out of characters. LOL.

    ;-)

  • I totally agree with your bro. I'm his personal student and have been for over 3 years now. The man is amazing. His school in CA is 7,000 sq ft and is sick!

  • i was hooked the first tape i saw. he could make 10 3 hour tapes just on how to get a triangle choke. or he could teach the same thing in 30 minutes lol ..and hes studied practically every grappling art available in depth and understands the similarities as well as the differences. but he's just as good at standup thai stuff...as well as street self defense and jkd. talk about well rounded!

  • Or maybe you would like to hear the people he has trained under or with. Gene Lebell, Dan Inosanto, JJ Machado, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Royce Gracie,

Maybe you should educate yourself a little more before making assumptions.

  • the guy is a legend for a reason. plus he's a class act and a great guy i'm told by someone who trained with the man and knows him well. not like you can't tell from his videos anyways. basically if you are worth a damn on the ground, you can see the man is incredible.

  • I believe Josh Barnett (also trained under Erik Paulson) did the same technique in his first match with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Thanks!
