I believe that nothing can quite live up to mario as an iconic character because almost every system by nintendo has been promoted WITH mario. Zelda has always had Zelda and Link. And if the Wii had really expanded the core base of Nintendo fans, Twilight Princess should have sold more than the original did on the NES.

last I checked it sold around 600k copies worldwide. That's great and all, but I don't think that's revival numbers. I personally believe if the JRPG is gonna come back in the U.S. more games like Resonance of Fate need to be made (less magic circles and stuff like that), and with better marketing strategies. That game is WAY better than FFXIII, yes, but FF is a big name and it has your audience. Why you would release this game with that one is beyond me (looks at SEGA).

@merchent343 some games, as in some TYPES of games. I'm not singling out Zelda or Mario or Metroid. It is better for adventure games, Skyward Sword is the perfect example of that. It's better for first person shooters, see Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. Platformers is debatable, side scrollers and racing games aren't so great which is why no one plays brawl with the wiimote

3. You can list sequels from any system that sold less than the first game. Killzone 3 sold less than Killzone 2. Resistance 3 sold A LOT less than the other 2 titles and the series has been on decline since the first game, sadly.
So basically, any fanbase can say that another doesn't buy their games. And all fanbases can say Series A is growing but they'll have many other franchises that are dying. Both sides have examples of both growing and dying.

1. I'm pretty sure the Mario Galaxies and Brawl were never pack-ins. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've never seen any.
2. You counted the Twilight Princess sales for JUST the Wii. You forgot that it's also on GameCube, which has 1.56 million sales, so together it's 7.56 mil. I also didn't get this point, you said the audience wasn't expanding although the sales for Zelda games were actually going up?
