I have a vastly edited vhs version of this, cut down to about 3 hours and after seeing this, now I have to get the dvd to see what's missing (I can guess, since I've read the book.)
Well, one thing I notice is the preacher in this 1981 min series is the same actor who played Joe the bouncer in the 1954 James Dean starring/Elia Kazan directed "East of Eden."
The trailer is confusing. Jane is on the cover, but the trailer implies that she's just a small side character. I hope she does have a main role, cuz I only want to see it for her.
This was a great adaptation of one of my favourite books. The 50s film was wonderful too - but I loved the fact that this one told the whole story. Jane Seymour was perfect as Cathy. I really hope that whoever plays her in the planned remake is as sweetly poisonous .... Kate Winslet would be ideal as would Natalie Portman or Kate Hudson with Eddie Redmayne and Tom Sturridge as Cal and Aaron.
Yeah she might work. It's not that I don't like Kate. I think her parents adversely affect her and to me she doesn't portray confidence on screen that a role like this requires. Kate needs to ignore her parents and just do her own thing, acting wise that is. I don't know that is the case but that is the impression I get from her movies.
This book was AMAZING! I hated Cathy with a passion, she was an effin bitch on crack, "i can get to be so small you wont even notice me." She set up her own rape scene when she was 10! She had no soul or humanity. Adam was an idiot to have let Cathy control him. But i felt soo sorry for Cal, all he wanted was to be loved. This is Steinbeck's best work in my opinion. The way he intertwined the trasks, cathy, and the hamilton's was genious, making it seem like he was the grandson of sam hamilton.
Wait i thought this was the movie were the boy rapes a girl and took her virginity and he didnt know what love was so he saw what horrible things he did and he bathed in kerosene and lit himself on fire???
I am just done with the book and, like every Steinbeck novel I have read, I am stunned at the authors talent. Would love to see this version of the book.
Hello! Can anyone pinpoint me the Rapidshare AND/OR MegaUpload links for this mini-series, pls? If you like, pm me AND/OR visit me @ Bolt.Org; I am 'The_Ecclectic_One82' there; see my uploaded movies there! ;-)
I haven't seen this version yet, but I hope that it doesn't focus entirely on Cathy/Kate simply on account of Jane's beauty the way the 1955 version focused entirely on Cal because of how handsome James Dean was. If so, that would be a very shallow treatment for such a profound character study and I couldn't stand to see another adaptation do such terrible injustice to one of my favorite novels ever.
It is not a question of 'which version is better'. They are both terrific.
The James Dean version concentrates on Cal Trask. Jimmy Dean was FANTASTIC in that one.
The Jane Seymour-version concentrates on the entire book. She is the one I remember the most, but all the actors were sublime, it is beautifully shot and kept me interested till the last minute.

@MLA786zasy Actually, the character of Samuel Hamilton is based off of his maternal grandfather. So yes, Sam Hamilton actually is his grandfather.
