Entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 on 04-14-1960, it peaked at No. 5 and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100...
On 12-28-1946 Sammy Kaye's version reached #1 {for 7 weeks} and spent 14 on Billboard's Best Sellers chart...
Two other versions also charted in 1946; Kay Kyser's version peaked at #3 and lasted 11 weeks on Billboard's Best Seller chart {this version was 1st to enter the charts} and Hal Derwin's version made it to #6 {it was Derwin's only record to ever make the charts}
Anyone doing their tourist thing should head for Malvern in England. The council wanted to get rid of our original gas lamps and go all flash modern but we beat them and gas lamps still glow!
@momac71 Catherine O'Leary was an immigrant living in Chicago in the 1870s. It was alleged that a fire started in her barn which went on to burn a large part of the city, an event known as the Great Chicago Fire. After the fire, she was used as a scapegoat by the Chicago Tribune whose reporter admitted that he had made up the story of a cow kicking over a lantern because he thought it would make colorful copy. Many believe that the fire began with the O'Learys' cow knocking over a lantern.
my parents danced their first dance to this song in Martinsburg Missouri in the early to mid 60's. They went to a youth group dance and were matched b/c the girl and boy with the biggest feet were supposed to dance together. I have to chuckle everytime i hear the story.
maureen...i grew up listening to jim, bonnie and maxine...this song....and margo (9th of may)...scarlet ribbons and the three bells of course....and so many more. thanks for remembering this trio....
@mamamialove Hi Mama Lauren, Great to hear from you again! I hope things are going well for you in your new home. Huggie wuggies to you! :D <3 Maureen
Hi Maureen, This is an old favoite of mine too. A few years ago, Alice & I saw him at the Grand Ole Opry. We were on our way to Graceland, and Branson. He still sounds good to me....**********

maureen, i so enjoy these old songs. this is especially beautiful.i love jim ed brown songs. thank you for sharing this video with me. 10stars. god bless you, margie
Jim Ed Brown's voice was always so mellow. The Browns' sound was so just right for this song (and 'The Three Bells', too). As with you and so many others who have responded, this was a real favorite of mine while in junior high......so long, long ago.
They maKE NICE SONGS TODAY, BUT SOMETIMES WE SHOULD STOP AND REFLECT WHEN SONGS WERE MORE VARIED, I CAN NOT IMAGINE ANYONE SING A SONG TODAY (oops taps) about old lamp lighters just isn't going to happen,is it?? songs were much more varied than todays themes are sex drugs and heartbreak. loved it .
I well remember when this song was released. 1959 was a year of fast moving transition. This vintage classic, with it's nostalgic lyrics, brought us back to good 'ol solid ground. What I can't remember, is anyone who didn't like this song.
I think you collected an excellent selection of pictures to accompany this all time favorite. Thanks for a very nice video. We don't have gaslights anymore. Not to worry. I'll light a candle for you. ♥
@santamara Hi! I used to make videos more often but I've run out of ideas and inspiration. I hope this is the first of many...I enjoy making them as much as I enjoy receiving very nice comment like yours. :D

I could listen to Jim Ed all night, and you put together a great package.
I'm not ashamed to say I still get a little 'misty' listening to this.
Thanks again
