Joe didn't take Galento seriously until he got hit by him.
Then Joe realized that the guy looked like a bum but was very dangerous. So he tightened up and boxed him and was VERY careful about not getting in tight with him.
Galento blamed his corner for him losing, he claimed if he was allowed to fight his fight (punch him in the nuts, knee him, head butt etc. ) he would have won.
Joe Louis is an ALL TIME great, meaning he would be great in ANY era. People keep comparing old time fighters to the modern time fighters without considering that if the old timers were around today then their style would have improved as well. Plus, they most probably would be bigger. Joe Louis is among the RARE fighters who hit an opponent and they don't move. They look as if they were dead on that canvas. Can't say the same for Larry Holmes, etc...
Galento vs Earnie Shavers. I pick Galetno because he had a great punch but also great endurance. Shavers had a tendency to fade in latter rounds plus he lost to journeyman Bob Stallings who I think was around 5'8'.
@WHITEBOYxOFxAMERICA seriously, with all due respect earnie shavers would ktfo Galento, Larry holmes even said " I don't think Joe Louis could take punches from todays boxers"( meaning 80's) let alone tony galento who keeps his hands low. and both fight at a slower pace than boxers from 80s or 90s
My gf was watching this over my shoulder, and she asked if they had deliberately found the world's handsomest boxer and the world's ugliest boxer, and got them to fight each other.
(I said no, and that if she ever called Joe Louis ugly again, I'd knock her out).
I think Joe knew that Galento was just trying to hype the fight. Galento was a game boy though. As tough as they come. He could murder you with one shot. My dad went to his bar a few times and saw Galent throw some guys out. Real tough guy. My dad could fight like nobody I've seen but he said he'd never try to take on Galento!
@sweetcandii5 Unless he landed a KO punch (always possible, as Galento had heavy hands) he was going to lose. He was always in lousy shape, his defense was simply non-existent... and Louis was a great and complete fighter.
I can't believe that the crowd was cheering for that fat asshole!!! That racist prick was as mean as they come. Joe should have extended the fight and break every bone in Galento's extremely ugly, fat face!!!
@bismarck1234561 You're right! Leading up to the fight, Fatboy called Louis's house and insulted him and his wife. Joe planned to stretch out the fight to torture Fatty, but after the knockdown he buckled down and ended it.
How come at the end of all Galento's fights, his face looks like a dish of wet bacon. The worst was his fight against the slugging Max baer....
He does have a hell of a left and pretty good timing for a rollie pollie fat ass. Great earlier Louis fight, really shows Louis could move when he has to, he wasn't a mummy like many younger people or non-boxing fans think Louis was, but he really could move, he just always taunted his opponent and forced his fight.
Tony had a wicked left hook all right but, judging by this performance and the one against Max Baer, I wouldn't have wanted to have been hit by his right, either!
