Everyone who is saying that he is risking his life is wrong. He has a safety rope tied around his body that is loosly tied to the main rope. You don't see it because the people who made this video digitally took out the safety rope in order to make the video more entertaining. If you don't believe me, look at the safety rope's shadow on the rock on 1:34.

If you look closely at the footage in question...you'll notice when you can see the shadow of a safety line that the footage is from a helmet cam. But he's clearly not wearing a helmet cam in the rest of the shots. I suspect he did the line several times with a line and a helmet cam to provide an additional angle. This is not a hoax, but perhaps just over-zealous production.

For those actually interested Dean Potter HAS indeed walked this line without protection. There are videos on youtube documenting it. While he does appear to have a harness in some shots shown here, they are simply from practice runs done prior to his no-safety walk. He has walked many highlines without protection and has also done some amazing free climbs. Search for Lost Arrow highline if you want see some more. Or "touching the void".

I can't understand why people would think this is fake. This clip was on TV, I remember seeing it on local news, and the guy had a freaking cam on his head. Why can't they just leave the raw video alone - and not edit out the harness that is trailing him and attached to the rope.  It is enough of a cool accomplishment - and difficult without pretending that he has "no" safety equipment when he clearly does. You get a glimpse of it near the beginning in a shot of a different walk - and near the end of this walk you can see the shadow of the line - but it is edited out of the rest of the clip.
