Ironically, this promo is a testament to Verne Gagne and the American Wrestling Association. All four men in this clip, (Okerlund, Flair, Heenan and Hennig) all had AWA beginnings. Flair's career started there, and the other three were a big part of Vince McMahon's coup to go national, along with Hulk Hogan. WOW.
You can wonder how much money Verne would have made if he only had the vision McMahon had. This would be a different wrestling world.
Ric Flair, one of the greatest. Argubly one of the funniest wrestlers of all time aswell, whenever he was in the ring or on the mic, you knew he was going to make you laugh!
@SawThatComingAgain "Let me just say after you were distorting the belt that proclaimed me the REAL World Champion..."
Flair sent the "Big Gold" belt to the WWF before he debuted. Bobby Heenan would pump Flair's arrival on WWF TV by simply holding up the belt. After WCW Legal stepped in, Vince had to digitally blur the belt. I believe they replaced it with a tag belt later on, I'm not sure.
Flair won the Rumble, putting to rest his claim as the true World Champion.
@davesecx Technically no, not a shot a Sid, but a slam at WCW. Flair implied that to be a true star in the sport, you had to be WWF Champion. Ric never "lost" the belt on WCW TV, but was stripped after he left. Having the Big Gold and winning the Winged Eagle meant that he was to first to possess two of the major world titles simultaneously, which was unheard of at the time. Even Hulk Hogan didn't pull that off. That's why you can sense Flair's genuine satisfaction in this promo.
The Best Promo EVER!!! arguably the GREATEST of ALL TIME!! WITH A TEAR IN MY EYE!!!! i dream about this promo! say it all the time when im drunk! thank you Flair!
One of the greatest promos ever cut in any wrestling organization!! Nature Boy was the best on the mic ever...no question about it. In terms of actual wrestling ability, he was also pretty good. You have to give it up to him, he's like 62 and he still bleeds professional wrestling. He'll never truly retire, he'll die as an active wrestler.
@21Ricde With the amount of financial mess Ric Flair is in right now, dying as an active wrestler could be his only option to avoid complete ruin. The Grantland website article 'The Wrestler - real life' chronicles the matter in great detail.
That article is disgusting and you shouldn't be spreading it. There's no actual "article" content, it's just a clinical of Flair's private financial dealings. It's absolutely disgusting.
And before you answer, think, how would you feel if someone wrote that type of "article" about you? Doing nothing but listing your personal information, income and private mistakes?
@EGarrett01 Well...I can see you are emotionally upset about my passing on information to explain why Flair has to keep wrestling and I can understand your logic. However, the truth is Flair had it all and he had it all for years. He could have retired gracefully but he can't due to stupid things he did and stupid things other people did to him. As a Flair fan, it upsets me more that I know he bleeds all over a TNA ring as a 60 odd year old because he has to not necessarily because he wants to.
@21Ricde With the amount of financial mess Ric Flair is in right now, dying as an active wrestler may be his only option to escape complete ruin. The Grantland website article entitled 'The wrestler in real life' chronicles Flair's money troubles in great detail:
You could be right. Who knows where fact and fiction ends when it comes to wrestling promos. As for Hogan, I think The Royal Rumble result was just a convenient way for him to lose the title to Flair without doing the job for him.
Hogan would rather do a job via a tombstone to the head via a chair and allow Sid to throw him over the top rope vs. Flair pinning him even under extremely dirty and controversial circumstances?
@rlouie05 Yes, from Hogan's perspective it is stronger for him to lose uncleanly or via circumstance (over the top rope) rather than to job cleanly. Not only that but he would have to job to a rival superstar who just turned up from WCW. As well as his ego, Hogan's downfall is that winning is his gimmick. If he lost the gimmick to hulk up and win every time he would just be called Average Hogan and lose credibility, effectively burying him more quickly than the average wrestler.
@BobbyUK1979 Well, if winning was Hogan's gimmick, then why did he put over Warrior cleanly 1 year prior to this happening? Hogan didn't suffer that much from that clean loss I recall, though immediately after that loss, he allowed Earthquake to squash him like a bug and then he was missing from TV while Warrior-mania ran rampant...
@rlouie05 This is just my theory but I believe he lost cleanly to The Ultimate Warrior so he could make time to star in the film 'Suburban Commando' which came out in 1991, Earthquake squashing him would make fans believe he was injured and not off making films. On the quiet, I believe Hogan thought he was going to be a mega film star and 'pass the torch' to The Ultimate Warrior. Fortunately, Hogan had enough sense to remember what happened to 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and hedged his bets.
@BobbyUK1979 I still wonder what Hogan and Vince were thinking when Warrior was chosen to be "the guy" over the likes of Randy Savage, Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, or even Honky Tonk Man (since he's the "greatest IC champion" of all time with his year-long reign)? I know, all these men have flaws, but Warrior's promos largely unintelligible!
@rlouie05 I thought Warrior was probably the most suitable in terms of fan base though I mark out for all of the wrestlers you mentioned. The Warrior's gimmick was that he came from another world so his promos were meant to be eccentric. At the start of his WWF career he made it a point to face the wrong way when doing a promo like he didn't know how to react to a TV camera. The Warrior was a good actor and I find it odd that his gimmick (a highly successful one) made him an easy target.
Mr Perfect and Bobby Heenan play excellent supporting roles here with their smug smiles as Ric Flair gives the promo of his life. I couldn't imagine any wrestler in the WWE nowadays even coming close to anything like that.
@BobbyUK1979 Is it me, or if Hennig & Heenan weren't in the background, this sounds like a face promo as Flair did not say anything personally derogatory about his competition other than defeating them? Am I also the one who thinks this promo had a veiled shots at NWA and WCW with the "this is the greatest moment in my life" and "this is the only title in the wrestling world that makes you #1", which heavily implied his 7 World titles in NWA/WCW weren't as great as this moment?
@rlouie05 I think it was the mock sentiment here that makes this promo wonderful. Flair acting like a face despite being a heel is both entertaining, enforces what he achieved (over one hour of even fake wrestling and making it work is impressive) while still coming across as a slimeball. As for the 'greatest moment' dig at NWA/WCW, Flair had major problems with Jim Herd the executive rather than NWA as a whole, this showed by his return to WCW in 1993 after Herd was fired from the company.
@BobbyUK1979 Even with it was truly a dig at Jim Herd mainly, you must admit that by saying "this is the only wrestling title that makes you number 1", that NWA/WCW title got a buried the moment Flair held up the WWF title while never having lost the NWA/WCW title. It must've been embarrassing for Hogan to indirectly lose his title to Flair this way too.
@rlouie05 Flair was known for putting over his opponents. An example is after he had a great match with Eddie Guerrero on Nitro back in 96, Flair put him over huge in a interview with Gene Okerlund and even went as far as to say he was going to be a future world champion.
Yeah he said it; but I don't think he sincerely believes that. Most wrestlers in WWE have had to peddle that crap because of how much backstage clout HHH has. Truthfully, HHH is great but not 'THE GREATEST'. Maybe the top 30...but certainly not the top 10.
@jake94 , that's the whole point- if Flair had said HHH is the most ego-hungry wrestler and if the WWE had a WCW level competition on TV, that HHH would have killed the WWE a long time ago. HHH certainly has more clout then any wrestler in history, but he has not done it on his in-ring merits but on his marriage.
If HHH were to ever beat or cheat on Stephanie McMahon, then we will see how much clout and power he really has.
@TheBlackRose1991 , and I predict that SHOULD HHH ever beat or cheat on Stephanie, or if Stephanie leaves him for someone else.....how "good" will the Game be then?
I predict he would open every WWE event for the remainder of his contract, jobbing to the Brooklyn Brawler.
@XChupacabras I have no doubt that he will be punished if he does cheat on, or leave Stephanie, but it does not affect how well he performs in the ring. He's a decent wrestler, and I'm just saying he was a multi-time world champion before he got together with Stephanie.
And part of wrestling is keeping things fresh and keeping the fans from thinking it is settled into a rut. If it were real, like the UFC, then a lot of his accomplishments would stand out. In something scripted, where the fans wanted Stone Cold and were told "Nope, you are getting HHH", then no wonder their business is off.
One of the greatest promos ever cut; and coming from Flair, that's saying something. In a two minute span, he buried the NWA/WCW title because he never lost it and basically told the main eventers in the WWF that he's still the man because he has their belt as well. I was marking out like a MFer at Tennessee.
This should be required watching material for ever wrestler who signs a WWE contract. This is one of the ways you get butts back in the seats to watch a wrestling event.
@ratesforless Thing that was always amazing about Flair at this time was he always plugged in his comrades (heenan and Perfect) and made sure they got some attention.
And yup, his promos are as sophisticated yet entertaining as they get. Looking back now, I love this 91-92 Flair.. his style, music, assuredness (like the Big Dog has come home).
Not to mention, at the time nobody had come close to putting on the performance Flair did at the Rumble. It really left a feeling of "Oh crap...if he can stay in there that long and outlast legend after legend, and especially with Heenan and Perfect at his side, who the hell can stop him?" He wasn't stronger or faster than anyone, but he was smarter and that's what made him better.
"let me just after view distorting, the belt....... TO PROCLAIMING THE REAL WORLD CHAMPION! IM GONNA TELL YOU ALL! WITH A TEAR IN MY EYE! This is the greatest moment in my life..... " TO BE THE MAN! YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE MAN! WOOOOOOH!
@guardianshaven not true buddy rogers was nwa champion for two years and he was the first wwe champion in history so ric flair is the second man to win both titles
"I'M GONNA TELL YOU ALL WITH A TEAR IN MY EYE. THIS IS THE GREATEST MOMENT IN MY LIFE." THAT WAS DEEP AND THIS IS INDEED A CLASSIS WRESTLING PROMO. PERIOD!
Man it was great Flair winning the title. However, I thought Piper Might have won It. Could You Imagine Piper winning both titles in one night? That would have been fucking huge! ;D
@JMcauley211 That would have fucking ruled. With all due respect to Flair, and as impressive as it was for him to last 60 minutes, Piper so should have won this royal rumble.
I remember "listening" to this live, because I could not get PPV when I was a kid and so I would watch and listen to the scrambled screen of where the PPV was being broadcasted lol. WOOOOOOOOOOO!
@Mujangga I think it was Gene's lame-ass attempt at trying to insinuate that there was a party going on just outside of the camera view. There was no cigarette.
That was back when the WWE has a respectable looking world title... compare that to the Cena title and you'll get a small glimpse into what is wrong with the WWE today.
indeed it was. The Undertaker beat Hulk Hogan at Survivor Series 91 due to Ric Flair's involvement. Hulk won the title back on 'Tuesday Night In Texas' but because he won through cheating -threw urn ashes in Taker's eyes- Jack Tunney declared the title vacant with the winner of the '92 Rumble becoming Champ. flair came in at #3 and stayed in till the end, eliminating Sid Justice with the help of an already eliminated Hulk Hogan
Gotta love Flair. He comes off classy even when he's a cheating, no good heel. Definitely the man. Him, Heenan, and Perfect were an awesome team, it's too bad they weren't together long or that Flair's WWF run didn't go on longer than it did, but him winning the RR was awesome, especially with Heenan cheering him on the whole time.
Flair was the first ever wrestler to draw a number below 5 and go on to win it. If u watched that royal rumble he was getting destroyed through out the match and still came out the winner. And it was the first time the wwe title was on the line in the Royal Rumble match.
Flair looks so exhausted he's pretty much out of character, otherwise he wouldn't have shook Tunney's hand or would have snatched the belt from him. He also means it when he said it was the greatest moment of his life, if not one of them. Also Henning, Heenan and Flair were real life good friends so they were all legitamately happy and were in and out of character saying the stuff during the interview.
This sounds like a face winning the WWF title for the first time if Heenan and Perfect weren't behind Flair... am I the only who thinks this felt more like a face promo vs. a heel one?
So "put that cigarette out" looked and sounded like a shoot to me, especially with Flair, Heenan, and Perfect looking the same direction that Mean Gene did during that line... was it a work or shoot, or a "worked shoot"?
"When you walk around this world and you tell everybody you're number one , THE ONLY WAY YOU GET TO STAY NUMBER ONE IS TO BE NUMBER ONE!!!!!! " WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!

Wasn't Flair the first guy to be a world champion in both major promotions with this Rumble win?
guardianshaven 1 year ago
@guardianshaven not true buddy rogers was nwa champion for two years and he was the first wwe champion in history so ric flair is the second man to win both titles

Man it was great Flair winning the title. However, I thought Piper Might have won It. Could You Imagine Piper winning both titles in one night? That would have been fucking huge! ;D
JMcauley211 1 year ago 2
@JMcauley211 That would have fucking ruled. With all due respect to Flair, and as impressive as it was for him to last 60 minutes, Piper so should have won this royal rumble.

@Mujangga I think it was Gene's lame-ass attempt at trying to insinuate that there was a party going on just outside of the camera view. There was no cigarette.

and y'all pay homage to the man........... wooooooo.
ross92aimee03 1 year ago
indeed it was.

@ShesterJones You're wrong.
fishaman1980 1 year ago
@fishaman1980 That only happened one time, when Flair won it. It was never a standing rule.
Before this, the winner didn't get shit. Then, starting the next year in 1993, they got a title shot at Wrestlemania.

And it was the first time the wwe title was on the line in the Royal Rumble match.
peterj10880 1 year ago
Flair looks so exhausted he's pretty much out of character, otherwise he wouldn't have shook Tunney's hand or would have snatched the belt from him. He also means it when he said it was the greatest moment of his life, if not one of them. Also Henning, Heenan and Flair were real life good friends so they were all legitamately happy and were in and out of character saying the stuff during the interview.
Bull1908 1 year ago
Probably by fav promo of all time. Why dont we get post match promo's anymore? Check out Flairs promo after Wrestlemania 8 also. Pure Gold
