It's sad that we haven't realized that separation only weakens and causes conflict. My roots come from the Basque country. I never knew how bad it was for the Basque people. I thought Spain was united. Que tengan fuerza la gente de Basque.
My father's side of the family has Basque roots. I never knew much about them until now. I am a Californian-born American but I am Mexican, Native American, Irish and Polish with splashes of Scottish as well--my mother being full Mexican (which of course inevitably has Native American in it as well) and my father adding everything else to my bloodline. I feel proud to add Basque blood to that list, their pride in themselves in admirable.
THERE ARE COWARDS THAT ARE AFRAID OF LOOSING THEIR FINANCIAL WELL BEING IN TERM THEY GIVE UP THEIR HISTORIC FREEDOM.... I RATHER DIE FREE......FUCK SPAIN
salam, our palestinian homeland is being oppressed too. We will fight and stay faithful to God and he will make us victorious over the jews in Israel. We will pray for Basque country too so they can be victorious over Spain!
@chaosbringer127 i will ask you a thing and i will like you to reply with the same calm that i am replying you ok? ;)
I personally defend the right of Palestine to be an independent country like Basque Country and Catalonia, but i also defend the right of israel to exists, so why you don't support the two states as i do and stop to spread hate between jews and arabs? ;)
@tontsa911 there is a large difference between nations that have independance and ones that dont. Some with independance, such as South Ossetia, Somaliland, Transnistria or Nagorno-karabakh have minimal if no internation recognition. Some like Basque Country, Tibet or Quebec are not independant but a large majority of it's citizens want it. INDEPENDANCE DAY IS TODAY!
@SamsSpaghetti haha you are pathetic man i said blacks and arabs i want you to go to algeria and find the white man or asian man you wont so its mostly black and arab you idiot you know nothing of any country
@SamsSpaghetti then you are racist and you have no say in who can come to my country i have black friends they are great people and some very funny they do not ruin this country they are people same as arabs i play soccer with many and they are great people aswell and there belief in islam makes them brave and selfless men

I am sorry, my English is rather poor than perfect.:)
My question is the following:
To my knowledge during the Franco's regime the Basque language was forcily oppressed. In other words many of Basques had stopped to spek their native Basque language and changed it to Spanish.
What is the situation now? Do Basque people use again their native mother language or they remained assimilated, please?
Basque Language and nation have a similar history to the one of irish language, they not feel spanish but, as ireland, began to lose its native language in early 20th Century. The situation could resumed as in Ireland as: No one speaks basque as first language, but no one feels spanish, i think now it is about 16% of people that speaks basque as first language in the basque country, altough i think the whole basque country (including the one that is domined
and is part of france had a mininum knowledge of basque, franco's dictatorship forbid to speak basque, to have basque names, to toponimy places in basque...... and this made the basque language to be even less speaked, when the democracy came basque languages was made official in the basque country and navarra (which are the same but are divided by spain) and now you can put names in basque, speak basque, address in basque to the administration, and in the school there is the option of
I am from catalonia myself and we have a similar situation that the one of the basques but the advantage here is that education is ONLY in catalan and in occitan (in the occitan speak part of catalonia) which has made that the almost the whole catalonia speak catalan today and catalan is the first and mother language of 50% of catalans, and that is purely stastic because outside the metropolitan area of
@breizhcatalonia1993 i am basque and just because for what most of stand for does not make me anti basque or catalan i am anti indepence of basque country and catalonia.
I HOPE THE REPUBLIC OF BASQUELAND COMES INTO FORCE ONE DAY BUT NOT BY THE BULLET. USE THE BALLOT INSTEAD. USE THE INTERNET, TOO, TO REACH OUT TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. FRANCE AND SPAIN SHOULD BE FORCEDDTO HAND OVER THEIR PARTS OF THE PYRANEE MOUNTAINS TO YOU AS REPARATION FOR WHAT THEY DID TO YOU OVER THE CENTURIES. LOOK AT WHAT THESE "CIVILIZED" COUNTRIES DID TO YOU. THEN COMPARE IT WITH WHAT THE NAZIS DID TO THE FRENCH. SEE THE SIMILARITIES? SO DOES THE REST OF THE WORLD.
I hope the basque country will achieve the independence, because the Central Power of Spain has always atacked every non-castillian spanish language, so their independence will give them freedom and will protect that ancient and valuable language, euskara. Spanish has discriminated basques, perhaps they want to hide it, but we won't forget what they did. ETA doesn't represent basques or independentists basqs, which don't agree with violence, but for spanish is easier to disqualify them with that
As someone who is half Basque I have to admit that the idea of Basque independence is absolutely ludicrous. It's development is understandable. Franco was a jerk, but those days are over and there really wasn't much of a history of Basque repression before him. Quite the opposite, really. The Basques have mostly enjoyed many privileges within Spain. At one time everyone born in Vizcaya was considered a hildago from birth for crying out loud.
I was thinking the same about how Russia ,dominates it minority's...But those minority's are growing, and Russia's population is failing like a rock... Maybe the Russians need to lay off the vodka and have more children...lol...
@TheDontancredo i have, this is why i tell you, i know Georgians wishto have relations with basques..but we know their origin is a mistery, and every thing are just speculations, anyway who should read is you man, this is why the Research was done and showed a completly diferent conections,im sorry to dissapoint you.as well Vasque people are the first human group in Europa, they share genetic conectios, unlike georgians.i wish you could read more and not base ur ideas in similarities of names
@TheDontancredo the basques may well originate from the first n african people "the pre arab berbers"......its scary but I love any truths revealed by DNA analysis.........of course its far more complex but there is a general trend
@3tangle3 IN GENERAL FRO SURE IS FAR MORE COMPLEX AND AS A CONCLUSION I WILL SAY SOMETHING ABOUT UR COMMENT, AS WE KNOW ALL THE EUROPEAN TRIBES COME FROM AFRICA, SO BE MORE SEIROUS IF U WANT TO WRITE ABOUT THE PROCEDENCE OF A COUNTRY,I WILL EXPLAIN TO YOU IN OTHER WAY,DONT WRITE BULLSHIT, THE ONLY RESEARCH IN WHICH is possible to proove until now IS THAT VASQUES ARE RELATED TO BRITISH,IRISH AND SCOTICH its not better but its the reality.
@TheDontancredo why caps? I am conducting a PhD on the genetical history of the brit isles.............what is your evidence? what is your methodology....the fact you write the word scotch and irish with british together does not fill me with confidence at your qualification lol
@TheDontancredo DNA researches does not matter. In this few, Armenians and Georgians have more common DNA but they still are Indo-European like Celts, ore Germans. Read more about the languages. There are a lot of similarities in Georgian and Basque grammar. Anyway I do not think that Georgians and Basques are relatives, but I do not think either that Celts (which are Indo-european) are similar to Basques. Now we see who wish to have relations with basques...
From the video, "the origins of these people remain a mystery"
Lulz wut? They're simply a people that resisted the the language of the Indo-European migrants. How are they a mystery? The media has to sensationalize everything.
@FlashVirus omg but where did they come from earlier on ? did they live in europe for millenias? did they come from asia or somewhere else to settle in northern spain ?
They came to Europe just like everyone else. Most of them are probably descendants of neolithic migrants. For whatever reason, when Celtic culture was catching on in the areas around them, they remained the same. Perhaps it's because they didn't trade as much as their neighbors (so they didn't pick up a celtic tongue). Who knows really. It's cool they held onto their traditions, though.
@FlashVirus i guess its also cause they had good predispositions to isolate themselves in the unacessable mountain areas of the northern part of the iberian peninsula
@TheMistAnchorite taci dacă ești prost, cum poți sa spui ca bascii vorbesc spaniola. Basca este o limba pre-indoeuropeana, nu are absolut nicio legătura cu spaniola, sau cu ori care alta limba din Europa. /watch?v=wV1WqPv0iWc
well said Neu1983. Good news today though!! For the first time since 2003 ALL Basque people will be able to vote, even though the Spanish fascist state through all they had to stop us we outwit the bastards! Our finest hour is coming, there'll be more pain and Basque blood spilt but is coming! GORA EUSKAL HERRIA ASKATUTA!!
It seems that all the hope, intentios to be independent from Spain is related to ETA. And this is a huge mistake. The majority of the people who want the freedom of the basque country don´t support ETA. The strategy which is employimg for example ORDOÑEZ widow and many spanish people is to confuse people with these methods.
Respects to the Basks and independence for the Basks. In the French Republic identity and origins are not respected and all forced to be French. I am from Normandy we have our own culture, language and identity but the French have for long trying to eliminate our identity.
@Anquetil79 cultural diversity of France is hardest hit than here in Spain, I am Galician and Spanish Constitution recognizes Galicia, the Basque Country and Catalonia as historical nationalities respecting their customs and their own languages,
French central state should be aware of this diversity and respect it. Normans, Bretons, Basques, Catalans, Burgundians, Alsacians ... should have more recognition
Ana Iribar Min 3:12 Euskal-herria doesn't exist? Why doesn't she talk with the hundred thousands of Basque language speakers that make the land of the Basque language a reality everyday of their lives
That kind of prejudice and flat out ignorance is a deterrent to mutual respect and understanding and BTW has anybody ever met any Englishman or Castilian for example, who loathes their own english or castilian languages as much as these "so called Basques" demonstrate towards their own Basque Language? Truly shameful. Hare okerrago!!!
the SAME People fighting over "nationality/culture".
In fact, minority languages & cultures influence majority languages & cultures --
and vice versa....constantly developing and transmuting over time.
Here's a laugh, the Basques will never eliminate the Basques who oppose them....nor the Irish eliminate the Northern Irish....nor the Scots Highlanders eliminate the Scots Lowlanders....etc....ad infinitum! ;D
@Ulansananelan Can't understand why people that have no idea of what they're talking about feel the need to have an uneducated opinion. There is a Basque movement in French Basque Country, there's always been, at one point there was an armed group operating "Iparretarak" but there's a very good explanation to all your questions, if you want the answers get a proper book, if not, shut up you moron!
@21centurynostradamus That's completely false, I'm afraid! The basques are in no way related to either. The Irish are Celtic in origin, as are the people of Scotland and Wales (though I presume that by "British", you effectively meant "English"). The English have quite a complicated history involving Germanic people, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Normans....but they have no connections to the Basque people. The Basques are entirely unique.
@fionnskie the high amount of rhesus negative blood in basques is similar to the celtic irish and cornish people . It is not beyond the realms of impossibility that groups of basques immigrated to the British and irish isles when it was still attached .
I think the fact that 35% of basques have negative blood brits and irish have similar numbers. Not to mention their flag looks a bit like the union jack in different colour's :P
@M1ckyCFC Why?? Basque country is already autonomous, either way theyre going to be Economically, culturally, and politically tied, Especially now with the EU. And thats bullshit Spain encourages the use of regional languages in Spain now like Catalan, the franco years are over. and ETA are criminals
LoL.... "The basque language is the best" do you know what the kid says?
"El vasco es el mejor" guess what language is that... spanish, obviously because, probably the boy doesn't even know how to say it in basque... unlike some catalans almost every single basque speaks spanish much better than basque
"Basque activists"....yeah....Bin Laden was an "Arab activist"...
@M1ckyCFC Come On now, if we gave you guy freedom, it meant that England gotta walk out from Belfast too. And perhaps American have to get the fuck out and let the Native American roam the empty city.
@Insomaniaartist are you serious with that comment! yes get England out of Belfast to fuck! and that american native comment made me laugh clearly your a retard
Well it should exist as it's own country, there wouldn't be any problems anymore if they got independence, no 'terrorism', so many countries fight for independence every century, just let them be their own country, that's where they've already been.
I am a mix of Irish and Basque, born in America. My grandfather tells me his mother was basque. It really is interesting exploring our own histories and how we have ended up in the region we are in... me being in california, it is quite different than in Europe, but part of me wants to accept my basque and irish origins.
Genetics and origins is not such an easy topic and hard to grasp. It's not black and white.
So much history, so much control, too much religion has masked our identity
Good documentary, thanks very much. I'm an Irish student studying in Bilbao actually and I wasn't sure about the whole Nationalism thing. I can relate to it because Ireland has faced a similar struggle under British Rule and still there are problems in Northern Ireland and such.
Nope, they are normal white people like the rest of Iberians, and unlike the retarded and resentful nonwhite Brazilian troll pretending to be a "redneck" from the United States below this post
@RedneckVandal You moron. The Basque Country was the only place not invaded by the moors!! There're things called books, I don't know if you heard of them, but they give you all sort of information and facts!

In what extent has been effective the revitalization of the basque language since the fall of Franco's regime up to the present days please?

@farfromtotalism
I am sorry, my English is rather poor than perfect.:)
My question is the following:
To my knowledge during the Franco's regime the Basque language was forcily oppressed. In other words many of Basques had stopped to spek their native Basque language and changed it to Spanish.
What is the situation now? Do Basque people use again their native mother language or they remained assimilated, please?
farfromtotalism 5 months ago
@farfromtotalism I will answer you ;)
Basque Language and nation have a similar history to the one of irish language, they not feel spanish but, as ireland, began to lose its native language in early 20th Century. The situation could resumed as in Ireland as: No one speaks basque as first language, but no one feels spanish, i think now it is about 16% of people that speaks basque as first language in the basque country, altough i think the whole basque country (including the one that is domined
breizhcatalonia1993 3 months ago
and is part of france had a mininum knowledge of basque, franco's dictatorship forbid to speak basque, to have basque names, to toponimy places in basque...... and this made the basque language to be even less speaked, when the democracy came basque languages was made official in the basque country and navarra (which are the same but are divided by spain) and now you can put names in basque, speak basque, address in basque to the administration, and in the school there is the option of

TheDontancredo 6 months ago

TheDontancredo 6 months ago
@TheDontancredo why caps? I am conducting a PhD on the genetical history of the brit isles.............what is your evidence? what is your methodology....the fact you write the word scotch and irish with british together does not fill me with confidence at your qualification lol
3tangle3 6 months ago
@TheDontancredo DNA researches does not matter. In this few, Armenians and Georgians have more common DNA but they still are Indo-European like Celts, ore Germans. Read more about the languages. There are a lot of similarities in Georgian and Basque grammar. Anyway I do not think that Georgians and Basques are relatives, but I do not think either that Celts (which are Indo-european) are similar to Basques. Now we see who wish to have relations with basques...

@FlashVirus omg but where did they come from earlier on ? did they live in europe for millenias? did they come from asia or somewhere else to settle in northern spain ?
MrKiljeaden89 7 months ago
@MrKiljeaden89
FlashVirus 7 months ago
@FlashVirus i guess its also cause they had good predispositions to isolate themselves in the unacessable mountain areas of the northern part of the iberian peninsula

Anquetil79 9 months ago
@Anquetil79 cultural diversity of France is hardest hit than here in Spain, I am Galician and Spanish Constitution recognizes Galicia, the Basque Country and Catalonia as historical nationalities respecting their customs and their own languages,
French central state should be aware of this diversity and respect it. Normans, Bretons, Basques, Catalans, Burgundians, Alsacians ... should have more recognition

Free the basques from UK.
21centurynostradamus 10 months ago
@21centurynostradamus That's completely false, I'm afraid! The basques are in no way related to either. The Irish are Celtic in origin, as are the people of Scotland and Wales (though I presume that by "British", you effectively meant "English"). The English have quite a complicated history involving Germanic people, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Normans....but they have no connections to the Basque people. The Basques are entirely unique.
fionnskie 9 months ago
@fionnskie the high amount of rhesus negative blood in basques is similar to the celtic irish and cornish people . It is not beyond the realms of impossibility that groups of basques immigrated to the British and irish isles when it was still attached .
I think the fact that 35% of basques have negative blood brits and irish have similar numbers. Not to mention their flag looks a bit like the union jack in different colour's :P
