  • Although I'm a Proud American, I wonder what would have happened if Lee DID listen to Longstreet, disengage from Gettysburg, position the Confederate Army between itself and Washington in a well fortified area, thereby forcing the Union to attack it.

We're Lucky Lee didn't listen to him but you got to feel for him. A LOT of his men are going to Die, he knows it and can't Disagree cause it's Robert E. Lee..

  • @castortroy176 He would have been attacked as he manuevered. It would have been a melee of 5 Rebel Corps against 7 Union. Not even Meade was going to allow the Reb army to manuever so nicely right in front of him. He would have attacked while the Southerners were on the march.

  • It took everyone in America a hundred years to figure out that Longstreet was correct the entire way along, from prewar to armistice & reconstruction.

  • @centurion180ad damn right like he foresaw it

  • I actually received a great tour at Gettyburg a couple of years ago and the tour guide was pretty insistent that the plan was sound, but the execution was terrible. Poor communication lines and inaccurate Union cannon fire (which landed beyond the Confederate artillery, thereby pushing extra ammunication farther away from the battle) did the South in...

  • Despite that the fact the Pickett's Charge was an overall failure, I have to admit that the battle strategy for the attack on the Union center was well thought out.

  • Yes, and boy did he get buried by southern leaders after making his conversations public after Lee's death. Longstreet was labled a traitor to the South for many years...

  • @jreydel I feel so terrible for so many of the Southern Generals, and especially Longstreet. Completely willing to bury the hatchet after the war ended, and began to support the healing...and instead was treated so poorly. Forget about him being right here and potentially wrong on day 2, such a hero should never have been treated so

It's funny, I find myself wishing so much that Lee had listened to him after Day 1 and left,,,,but I support the Union...the civil war is a complicated matter

  • @SakaNaomi It's ironic because Longstreet was Northerner in many ways. He supported civil rights, opposed slavery, and even led black troops against racists attempting to take over New Orleans. He was a very good man whose viewpoints, both militarily and politically, were unfortunately ahead of his time.

  • Such a heartbreaking moment for Longstreet
