I'm having a headache trying to figure out which is the best stroke in many videos they teach almost to have your elbow in 90 degree as I see this video thorpe doesn't have it that high...
I ever heard about high elbow, but it was ian thorpe who realy gave me the best example of that. it is shocking how high is his elbow under water... first time i saw, just thought "this must be wrong!"
I might be wrong, but i think this it not ian but grant hackett, from the 1998 world championship, when ian also raced but wasnt focused by the camera as much as grant was.
@Jeremygriffithcole32 I tried it once, and it dose seam easier to pull. It was easy because it was not very effective. The pull is so shallow, your missing so much water.
It all matters if your new to swimming and if you are a boy and a girl I know that going 25s in 50 free is good if your a boy and 26-7s are good if your a girl districts is 23s for my school districts boys teams. PS dont forget if your young and new then you got plenty of time to get faster
Im a sophmore and this is my first year of swimming. And i now go 26.37. I run track so i was in good physical shape before and i lift weights, now im not buff but i got some muscle.
I say thats great if you continue to work on sprint drills and do everything your coach tells you to do youll drop tons of time remember to stay flexable & to increase speed and edurance and lastly strength. ps technique is everything practice practice practice.
@TheWTFers Are you Anthony Ervin, cuz hes the fastest 17 year old ever. I got a 22.9 now when I'm 17, I've swam for only a year and about 3 months. I wish I'd started earlier. I hope to break into the 21's this summer season.
@King0Fr0g Technique is everything, some coaches don't understand that. They just make you sprint all practice everyday without any aerobic sets, they pretty much ruin many swimmers that had great potential.
a 26 for the first year of swimming is very good. definitely work on getting the correct technique over going fast for the first year or two. developing good technique is crucial to going fast. muscle mass isn't nearly as important.

please...on ground, I can do 25m in like 3 seconds, come on...newbies are you telling me it takes all of you half a minute to go 25 meters? hahaha...HAHAHAHAHA! like I said, if I raced you and you were in a pool, I'd smoke you everytime

well...that's a different story!!! XD I would get my ass kicked, I have a very low fat index, Im around 8% body fat, and it's really hard for me to swim, Im not you know built or anything, Im just really slim and it's hard for me to go fast in the water =P
wow -considering for 14under boys the top 100meter free time in the US is 51.59 from back in 1987 - you must be incredible and the top 100m fly for 14s was done by michael phelps in 2000, he swam 55.78, i guess you will be the next 8gold medal winner in london
actually the reason for keepin or rather pushin the elbow forward and sweeping the hand underneath is to engage the shoulder better for a stronger and faster catch
notice how there is no out sweep on the catch. His hand pulls shallow and toward the centerline, engaging the forearm earlier in the pull. It is less stressful on shoulders too.

@sirdelrio maybe you are right, you notice that ian doesnt keep his elbow so high in other videos and grant does.

@macouco i know i said that, but i was wrong. It's young thorpe.
