I'm watching this again to get in the mood. I bought an old Victor heater (online auction that starts with E) that is similar to the Perfections. I've ordered my paint, and am waiting for delivery! Now, if I could just find REAL red or blue tipped matches like they used to make, I'd be happy.
Yankee i have a kerosene heater i have as backup, i cant use it all the time as its about $10 gal., there is a gas station which pumps it at $5 gal but it has a red die in it, ive heard the red die kills the wick or is otherwise not good for the heater is that true in your experience?
@avi614614 I have seen the price on the containers of kerosene in the stores and it is really expensive. I don't know why that is or who buys it either. I buy my kerosene from Fleet and Farm here in Minnesota (it's a farm store). It's K1 kero and clear as water, for about 4.20 a gallon with no TAX for home heating. I don't know about the dye and wicks. The idea of the dye ruining the wick makes sense to me though, I know they make fliters that can take dye out of fuel.
Being a fellow Minnesotan, where have you found the best place to get kerosene has been for you. I haven't been able to find many gas stations with a pump in the south metro.
OMG I finally took the stove apart found the parts YEA (female here so not really mechanically inclined) I am not sure if ALL of the parts are on the inside I have a 525 model and (the blue one) I need to know if there is anywhere I can see the tank and the thingy with the wick all put together I think myu tank has a small hole in it in the upper part need some advice and some pics if ANYONE will help. If I SEE it I can fix it, thank Yankee for the vid
I got one from Craigslist, in nearly perfect condition, Model 725. Tested it with kerosine from Homedepot for ~$10/galon and found it surprisingly effective! The guy selling it was a local like-minded person. So it was two birds with one stone - a awesome heater and a great connection. Thanks as always!
Hey I really like these heaters and was wondering what a average price of these are in decent condition? I have found many of these lately in decent to rough condition. Most just need a good cleaning and new wick plus repainting. Where do you suggest getting a new wick? I bought a 525 model that is in good condition, just needs a wick and a good cleaning. I only paid $25.00.
Acetone excels in removing carbon and dried fuel residue. (Paint too! Adequate ventilation is a must, as well as lack of open flame!) Works especially well in glass lamp bowls. In the late 1800's, prior to the production of kerosene, oil lamps and heater used coal oil, known today as mineral spirits. In many (but not all) areas, mineral spirits are less expensive than K-1. Haven't run my Alladin Blue Flame on it yet, but all my lamps do. Miles Stair's site has a great article on it.
I have seen two of these at my local flea market for around 35 or 40 dollars, but didnt buy them because I didnt know much about them, fuel type,indoor/outdoor, and parts. This video gives all that info and more. thanks Yankee.
I have an English Aladdin Blue Flame Heater which is also suppose to double as a cooking station. I think its more for boiling tea or something. The question I have is why do those burn yellow and the one I got says to burn blue only?
My friend bought one of these for me for a christmas present years ago but the insides were gone and somebody turned it into a lamp by putting a bulb inside where the heat is supposed to be. I never knew what its original purpose was until this video. Where can I get replacement parts, does anyone know? This was AWSOME. I been watching your vids for a year now and I can not thank you enough for ALL of your knowledge but this was a God send Thank YOU YANKEE you are great!!!
you are right yankee i sell wood stoves everyday. the quality has went down. It was once if you built something that lasted 20,30 yrs you were a great company ! Awesome video. We have one these in our basement. Just part of our antique collection. After seeing this it will be restored. Thank you so much for the great info you have provided on your channel!
@Yankeeprepper Yeah, it hit me that it might be a good idea. The woodstove I have is an England woodstove--just a standard boxy stationary woodstove. BTW, I wrote my question to you as it hit me. Now I've watched this full video. I love the look of those Perfection Oil Heaters, too. I have one of those big modern ones but
@prepperfrau Sorry. Got cut off. ...but my husband thinks it is an eysore and I have to keep hauling it back upstairs to use it. You are one sweet man if you warm up the bathroom for your wife in the morning!
hi, back in the mid 1970s my dad bought one that looked like that. my great aunt also bought a wood burning cook stove with a hot water resavour new at this time..
Quick question, Yankee. I have a woodstove and am wondering if I should buy a couple of those fire-proof bricks to put on the bottom of the firebox. The purpose would be to exend the life of the bottom of the firebox. I'd just build the fire on top of the bricks. I don't use a grate or anything in my woodstove. What do you think? Thanks,
@Yankeeprepper Yet another awesome video my friend. I have one question for you, what type of wood stove do have there? I thought you had done a video on it before. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find it.
Im going to be on the look out now! If i come across one sold! If it takes a while what eve. I use my wood burning stove almost every day during the winter! Luv it! Put a fan near or behind and blow it around my freezing cold shanty! Thanks Yankee keep it up!
Great video. I've been using a kerosene heater for years. Never had a problem with it does require a does of common sense when using it (or as my TI at Lackland would say, "common f*cking sense"). Maintenance is simple (and my heater, a ker-o-sun, has a battery powered ignition element, so no need to use matches to start it, though that is still an option). It came in real handy in the wake of the late October snow storm here in southern new england.
Ok, which one of you grabbed the blue Perfection Heater, Buy It Now, on that certain online auction before I could get it?! Good luck with your restoration!
My wife loves the look of this type of antique stuff. Buying preps is so much easier when they are aesthetically pleasing. Great suggestion, this is going to the top of my shopping list.
Nice heaters, but not an option for me. As the price of paraffin (kerosene) here
works out at £1.81 a litre, or in your money $12.61 a gallon. I remember my parents heating our house in the late 70's exclusively on these type of heaters, back then this type of fuel was dirt cheap, now it's more expensive than unleaded petrol !!
@MrPhreeradical You can only thank your GOV for that. That is a great example of how a GOV can control THE PEOPLE'S choices by using taxation. At the same time take away your ability to protect yourself, for your own good of course. From what I understand, Kerosene heaters are against the LAW in London. Same as New York city here in the states. Yet your neighbors the Dutch are enjoying the warmth of cheap Kerosene. As well as New York's neighbors Vermont and New Hampshire.
the first minute or so in he video I was thinking yankee finally got lost in one of those MN marshes. I very much enjoyed the video, and have found three of these little heaters on craigs list. I'm going to pick up a couple and refinish them. Mrs JJ will like them.thanks for the vid bro
@Bullbunny The main difference in models are mainly aesthetic. The only real upgrade I can find took place between the 500 models and the 600 and up models. The 600 models came with a newly designed converter, it has a "flame spreader". The 600's create more light and heat with less fuel. Having said that there is very little difference and I like the 500 models too. I don't like the "look" of the 700s as much personally. And the glass globes look cooler on some, but are heavy.
Very cool, I didn't know about those models, guess I should have figured there was a predecessor to the current models out there. Gonna have to keep my eye out for one of these in the classifieds, and looks so much better than the modern ones I'm more familiar with. Have you ever used a high pressure, pressure washer for stripping paint?I like using that sometimes to get away from the fumes if the piece allows. Thanks
I don't know how much different these are from the newer kerosene heaters, i had one of the new ones from home depot burn wrong while I fell asleep on the couch and the thing started to soot up, and did it so bad it caused $6,000 smoke damage to my home! I hope these are better than the kerosun heater and those types . Love your videos keep up the good work
@northernohioprepper The track record for oil heaters is almost spotless. With over 100 years use, there has never been a house fire caused from a faulty heater. Compared to the uncountable numbers of fires from electrical and wood heaters. There is not that much difference between the Perfection heaters and the new ones. The adjustments are simple, but if they are not adjusted properly they will smoke. I do not run mine when I am sleeping, but I know those that do.
Hey thanks for posting this, I was looking for a nice portable heater like this. Best part is they are selling for around 50$ on the high side around here in Iowa.
Very nice.. I love the old heaters. The best part of this is doing the work to restore these things your self. I love to restore things and bring them back to life..
@OBXSOLWIND I get that too! I love bringing something back and making it work again. I always blamed that on watching "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" too many times when I was young. Great to hear from you!
Great video--since your yukon stove video, I keep thinking "fuel" - how much do I need ? How easily can I obtain it ? How much of it can I store ? If I'm injured, collecting wood in my area would be difficult - fuel storage is paramount. I ended up with methylated spirits ( denatured alcohol ) - small stoves, each containing wool based absorbing material - 1.5kw for 6Hrs from 1.2 Litres of fuel per stove ( UNTENDED ). A toilet roll, soaked in alcohol, placed in a paint tin may achieve similar.
@DoverPipes Well let me be blunt about. If you have to ask me that question. You don't need to be watching my channel. If you can't do simple research on your own, you don't belong here. I don't want to be responsible for a question at that level. I went to the trouble of putting it in the vid in the first place and if you can't take the info from a 10 minute vid, than I would not even try lighting a match if I were you.
This is what I have been looking for something nice looking and will take the chill off.
we rarely get below freezing and the house is well insulated so this is ideal for when I don't want to start a big fire in the fireplace. Plus in shtf no smoke may be better.
Do we need to have some sort of barrier under it? like tilte or bricks? you said the bottom dosent get that hot so maybe not.
Was the dog doing tracking ? thanks again God Bless you !!!!!
@Machi74005 its not gonna give you a warning to turn it of or something, but you can have carbon monoxide alarm in the room that will tell you,
these things burn so clean that it practicly won,t put out much carbonmonoxide(as he stated earlier if im not mistaken).
i have one, a different later modern zibro model, that goes out if shaken, goes out if too much carbon, goes out if to little fresh air, goes out if fuel is too low, goes out if tank is removed etc it works great too. but expensive
They are so pretty and interesting to look at. Such a contrast to the new ones you buy today. They remind me of old farm equipment and hand tools, refusing to die, rusty but clinging to life in hopes of one day being needed again.
I ran out of space. Dieseal and home heating fuel will work though. I go to steam shows, second hand stores, and such and haven't paid more than $20 for any of my heaters. They work but aren't show pieces. They also give no indication (meaning smoke out the chimney) if you want privacy.
Could we use regular lamp oil in these burners? i have a few 5gallon buckets of lamp oil for all of are lamps that is being used but seems that i haven't put a dent in them not that i'd like to, but just wanted to know if its a possibility.
I have been using Perfection heaters for years. I have several and an Alladin. Two years ago we had a very bad snow storm and I was not only snowed in but without power for a week. I was very cosy with my heaters. I cooked on them and made coffee. It was sort of a letdown when the power came back on. I also have oil lamps that do well on kerosene, they put out some heat as well. You should use K-1 kero though. Dieseal and home heating oil is not refined enough and not too healthy to breath.
I love the look of the old heaters! I haven't come across one before. We had a few of the newer type and yes they aren't much to look at. lol The heaters do make a reasonable emergency cooking source to. I've made quite a few meals on the tops of them.
The house I grew up in had a fuel burning heater in the hallway and was our only source of heat. These are great...would love to have a couple of them. Thanks for sharing ;) c
The boys won their HS hockey game and I purchased a Perfection Heater Model No. 525 in original condition with only surface rust off craigslist today. After seeing this heater upclose I remember my grandfather having one hanging in his workshop. This was a good day. Thanks... Gman
i have the turqois blue model 630. i picked it up at a thrift shop with the intention of using it. all parts seem to be intact, but the inside is rusted a bit. It is also rusted to the point/or something is catching preventing me from raising the wick up ( which is burnt to the metal). does anyone know how i would go about correcting these two situations?
Looks like you started a bidding war on Ebay. I found won on local craigslist last night for $50. I am going to call later and check it out after a HS hockey game this morning. Have a good day.... Gman
You always show us so many unique things and ideas, Thanks, Love the heaters, I had one once but not antique, and they are wonderful heaters. Thanks for your vids
@HalfQ From what I understand the Perfection Heater was sold in the UK as well and Japan. In fact, in Japan kersosene heaters are still widely used and the PERFECTION heater is sold there to this day. Having the name and design bought and brought over seas to be manufactured there in the mid to late 1970's.
@TheFlorist11 I would guesstimate less than 10 lbs. And I personally would not hesitate to use these heater in a cabin tent or ice fishing/hunting shack. They can heat up a small room very quickly. Just make sure you have a little venting in small spaces.
I have one of these in the attic (It was used by my wife's Grandparents on their farm many years ago.) I have been wanting to restore it and get it operating. Thanks for the motivation and info.
@klosnoski They are rated soft or as brass, but thank you for taking the time to nitpik through YOUTUBE anyway. If it was not for henpeckers like you I don't know what I would do. No wonder you don't have time to put up vids yourself. Oh and while we are nitpicking, it's WASN'T, not WAS'NT.
@bellomarco1 I can't answer the "burn time". There is a web site that talks about that though, it's milesstair D0TC0M. (He even talks about how he keeps one burning all night on low flame to take the edge off in the morning.) I can give you this example from my morning. It's 10 degrees outside and it was 60 degrees in the house when I got up at 5am. I lit 2 heaters and the woodstove. By 6am it was 82 degrees and I am stripped to T shirt. I turned the heaters off till evening
Thanks, I've been looking for a good option for my home. This is perfect. I know that a few people have asked how much fuel it uses in a day or so, I'd be curious to find out as well. :)
Thanks! These are beautiful heaters. I see they are readily available online. I feel a project coming on!
A note about the wire brushes for people who may not be knowledgeable about using them, make SURE the wires aren't able to fly off into your body. Keep a flat wheel spinning sideways. I work in surgery and have seen a wire that went through an eye, into the brain, and one in someone's bicep.
A caution, they do put out considerable carbon monoxide, you must have lots of ventilation. You fire one of these in a closed room and fall asleep you will not wake up. That said they are a good heater, I have a couple myself, and they are nice for cooking on, and as a backup heater, but be careful with them. Your best paint for them is commonly sold for grills.
@logcabinlooms With any oil heater you need to use common sense. Using cheap or subpar kersosene can effect the efficiency. With that being said, I have CO sensors and have yet for one to go off in any room. Grill paint is 500 degrees and will not work. The temp on these heater exceed 500 degrees.
@logcabinlooms I was about to mention Carbon Monoxide.I remember the servere headache we use to get by smelling the fume's. He right about they made million of the them but also million's have died and still do .
I really love my old perfection heater, I got mine for free, some one was throwing it away b/c the wick was burned down, you can only find replacements online, I redid the wick, then later bought some fiberglass filters on sale in spring and resized them to fit my heater. the way they work is so simple yet so good, that i made a small version out of oil lamp parts and "tin cans" with some sheet metal that i use for camping, one of the greatest things i found for free, great video as always YP
@MunkeySpaz all the heat goes up the legs dont even get warm, the legs/lowwer body is not even connected to the heat source the tank just sits on a self in the lowwerbody. I use mine in the house all the time, however for safety reasons they say dont place them on carpets or rugs but not because of the legs heating up, but because if the get tipped over (which is hard to do they are very stable) with that said, make up your own mind,
@MunkeySpaz The legs do not get hot. The flame and tank is suspended in the middle of the heater. I use them on carpet and wood floors in my house with 3 kids and a dog running around. Over 6 million of these stoves were purchased and used inside American homes for over 60 years. They are a well built and well thought out heater.
Those are really awesome, great finds! I'll have to keep a sharp eye out for one! Have you ever tried burning the paraffin lamp oil? I'd be interested to. Know how that would cure the smell issue?
two great tricks about the wicks, 1. the wicks once burned down to the metal sleeve just remove the rivits move the wick up on the sleeve then reuse the rivits or replace them with staples (bend it by hand not a stapler) 2. I buy wicks that are bigger in size and just cut them and sew them to the right size with cotton thread. but to save even more time/money i replaced the wicks with fiberglass wicks... this works great as i can find larger wicks a lot cheaper then ordering online. great vid!
Mr. Yankeeprepper, I always find your videos to be educating, but I think this one is one om my favorites. I'm going to keep my eye out for one of those heaters. If it needs to be restored, do you think seasoning the high temp parts (like cast iron) would work as well as paint, or would it get too hot?
i will have to look into them, looks like somthing i would use and enjoy thanks for showing them.I know what ya mean about old things like that, there will be hardly none if any antiques worth keeping or useing from the last 25 to 30 yrs its sad.Person can hardly get the cheap plastic and partical board crap today to last a year or two. God Bless
Thanks for putting this up. I was looking for back up to my fire place and propane. I found one Exactly like your blue one. And one made in 1949 still in the box. How cool is that!
You said something along the lines of fuel efficiencity while using kerosene. Is that K 1 kerosene and I'm assuming that they don't put off enough carbon monoxide to be an issue. I was just looking at some like the new one you have but didn't know enough about them to buy it.
how many hrs does it burn on the gallon of fuel? i remember we had one when i was a kid it was color rust but worked.dad used it in the barn to take the chill out of the air.
@NastyChuck There is nothing you should really ever have to replace. But wicks and parts can still be had on EBAY or milesstair D0T-C0M. Wicks are the only thing you should ever have to replace. Other than that they are bullet proof.
These are absolutely awesome little heaters and can be found at a great price. Just a heads up for anyone interested... there is a #630 on ebay now for $130 with FREE shipping
i will keep an eye open for one I too have the new one unused maybe 5 years still in box. I have only 20 liter pail on hand still have to get more. thank for the infor
Very nice heaters I have 2 of them in my storage. Now because of you I have to get them out and redo them....lol You are right they are truly nice heaters. I like the old things too! Thanks for sharing bro!
@EastCoastPrepper You can get good wicks for them at milesstair-D0t- Com For about 11 bucks. Lots of good info too. They look really nice when they are cleaned up and it would keep you prepper shack cozy warm.
How many hours does one 1 gallon of kerosene last burning, set let's say medium flame, last someone? I'm from the so the winters are little odd here because it was 65 degrees two days ago now its 26.
Cool, I bought one almost like these at a garage sale about 12 yars ago for $5.00 I'll have to put it out and check the name on it and maybe even restore it! I bought it back then because I liked the look of it. Never thought 12 years later I might need it for a SHTF !

MrPhreeradical 1 month ago
@MrPhreeradical You can only thank your GOV for that. That is a great example of how a GOV can control THE PEOPLE'S choices by using taxation. At the same time take away your ability to protect yourself, for your own good of course. From what I understand, Kerosene heaters are against the LAW in London. Same as New York city here in the states. Yet your neighbors the Dutch are enjoying the warmth of cheap Kerosene. As well as New York's neighbors Vermont and New Hampshire.

What are the prefered models?
Bullbunny 1 month ago
@Bullbunny The main difference in models are mainly aesthetic. The only real upgrade I can find took place between the 500 models and the 600 and up models. The 600 models came with a newly designed converter, it has a "flame spreader". The 600's create more light and heat with less fuel. Having said that there is very little difference and I like the 500 models too. I don't like the "look" of the 700s as much personally. And the glass globes look cooler on some, but are heavy.
Yankeeprepper 1 month ago

Love your videos keep up the good work
northernohioprepper 1 month ago
@northernohioprepper The track record for oil heaters is almost spotless. With over 100 years use, there has never been a house fire caused from a faulty heater. Compared to the uncountable numbers of fires from electrical and wood heaters. There is not that much difference between the Perfection heaters and the new ones. The adjustments are simple, but if they are not adjusted properly they will smoke. I do not run mine when I am sleeping, but I know those that do.

Yankeeprepper 1 month ago
This is what I have been looking for something nice looking and will take the chill off.
we rarely get below freezing and the house is well insulated so this is ideal for when I don't want to start a big fire in the fireplace. Plus in shtf no smoke may be better.
Do we need to have some sort of barrier under it? like tilte or bricks? you said the bottom dosent get that hot so maybe not.
Was the dog doing tracking ? thanks again God Bless you !!!!!

@Machi74005 its not gonna give you a warning to turn it of or something, but you can have carbon monoxide alarm in the room that will tell you,
these things burn so clean that it practicly won,t put out much carbonmonoxide(as he stated earlier if im not mistaken).
i have one, a different later modern zibro model, that goes out if shaken, goes out if too much carbon, goes out if to little fresh air, goes out if fuel is too low, goes out if tank is removed etc it works great too. but expensive
ultrabluebear 1 month ago
They are so pretty and interesting to look at. Such a contrast to the new ones you buy today. They remind me of old farm equipment and hand tools, refusing to die, rusty but clinging to life in hopes of one day being needed again.
haymaker1776 1 month ago
@DoverPipes well i guess he already said it in the white texts first in the video.
its as safe as a heater can be, without the fear of short circuits and other malfunctions the electric ones have.
i currently have a zibro kerosene heater on, and it generates an enormous amount of heat.
it does 0,25 liter an hour(so its saving my heating bill also).
i like it a lot, and i bought it originally for my preps, but now i burn it everyday just for ambiance, i bought extra parts for it too.
ultrabluebear 1 month ago

@HalfQ From what I understand the Perfection Heater was sold in the UK as well and Japan. @Yankeeprepper Yankee, What is the burn time with those old heaters? They do look nice Mrs. Marco would not mind one of these in our old farm house.
bellomarco1 1 month ago
@bellomarco1 I can't answer the "burn time". There is a web site that talks about that though, it's milesstair D0TC0M. (He even talks about how he keeps one burning all night on low flame to take the edge off in the morning.) I can give you this example from my morning. It's 10 degrees outside and it was 60 degrees in the house when I got up at 5am. I lit 2 heaters and the woodstove. By 6am it was 82 degrees and I am stripped to T shirt. I turned the heaters off till evening

A note about the wire brushes for people who may not be knowledgeable about using them, make SURE the wires aren't able to fly off into your body. Keep a flat wheel spinning sideways. I work in surgery and have seen a wire that went through an eye, into the brain, and one in someone's bicep.

SouthDakotaPrepper 1 month ago
A caution, they do put out considerable carbon monoxide, you must have lots of ventilation. You fire one of these in a closed room and fall asleep you will not wake up. That said they are a good heater, I have a couple myself, and they are nice for cooking on, and as a backup heater, but be careful with them. Your best paint for them is commonly sold for grills.
logcabinlooms 1 month ago
@logcabinlooms With any oil heater you need to use common sense. Using cheap or subpar kersosene can effect the efficiency. With that being said, I have CO sensors and have yet for one to go off in any room. Grill paint is 500 degrees and will not work. The temp on these heater exceed 500 degrees.

I use mine in the house all the time, however for safety reasons they say dont place them on carpets or rugs but not because of the legs heating up, but because if the get tipped over (which is hard to do they are very stable) with that said, make up your own mind,

hybrid4163 1 month ago
How hot do the legs get on these? Would they be suitable to use in a room with carpet? Or would I run into a fire hazard?
MunkeySpaz 1 month ago
@MunkeySpaz The legs do not get hot. The flame and tank is suspended in the middle of the heater. I use them on carpet and wood floors in my house with 3 kids and a dog running around. Over 6 million of these stoves were purchased and used inside American homes for over 60 years. They are a well built and well thought out heater.

two great tricks about the wicks, 1. the wicks once burned down to the metal sleeve just remove the rivits move the wick up on the sleeve then reuse the rivits or replace them with staples (bend it by hand not a stapler) 2. I buy wicks that are bigger in size and just cut them and sew them to the right size with cotton thread. but to save even more time/money i replaced the wicks with fiberglass wicks... this works great as i can find larger wicks a lot cheaper then ordering online. great vid!
