On his question section on his website, I asked Gene Simmons if the demo would ever be released commercially and his response was: it is entirely up to Eddie and Alex.
A comment and a question. Those were some great photos. I was hoping to see DLR's signature drum throne jump. My question to all you YT/VH fans. Does anyone remember when DLR used to wear the bandanas down his legs, under the knee cap,in layers? I had a friend who used to go to school like that everyday for about a year. Sounds corny but I thought that was cool.
It is slightly fast, not sure if it's just because it's slightly sped up or if they were just doing a demo... i know that i write songs in standard then tune a half step down for recording and shows.... EVH's guitar is a half step down slightly sharp. Thats his signature turning!!! Good find thou.... it's awesome to hear this song a little different that the way it is on the RECORD!!
i remember watching a video Van Halen was making , an answer to the song remains the same, sadly it never came out, heck i still remember MTV was doing that Spend a weekend with rock stars, and they were doing Van Halen back in like 83
Eddie said once in a interview that he learned his guitar most of the time at the edge of the bed when his bro would go out to dates. Thank God for that or we woulnd't have the fingertapping that we do now or had since the new crap has come in.Thank God for VH and Eddie
They ususally tuned down half a step- so I think youre saying up a bit from that ?tuning doesnt still quite sound up to regular e tuning? - but I didnt check and do not have perfect pitch!
Lots of time to kill on the road, lots of downtime between recording sessions. All of that boredom and the sex-drugs-and-rock and roll lifestyle. It's surprising that anyone avoids addiction in those situations. Plus 1/3rd of the population shouldn't touch the stuff to begin with.
When your bass player has a Jack Daniels bass and the lead singer carries a bottle onstage, it's too easy to get. Plus everyone wants to party with you.
Hell I remeber reading stories of Ed saying when he was a teenager and his idea of a great time was sitting there drinking Shlitz tall boys and playing gtr for hours getting drunk and practicing! Started young and just got better as he got older, drinking that is.
Yeah, Ed was an alcoholic from day one (which was when he took that first drink at age 11 or 12) so it has nothing to do with being a rock star. Just born an addict. His father (and brother Alex) were/are addicts as well.
Well, I can't find my original post so i'm not too sure what I said but Alex is an alcoholic just like Ed only he stopped drinking years ago and has remained sober ever since. Unlike Ed, Alex got it right the first time. Way to go Alex! Too bad Ed didn't do the same many, many years ago.
i find it really interesting to do a song-level comparison of the demo-version solos and album-version solos.
For each song, the over-all plan of the solo is very similar, though there is usually not a one-to-one correspondence of notes within any given part of a given solo.
Despite his widespread recognition, Eddie is still under-rated in my opinion.
His style and technique has such a raw power and clarity, and precice timing, also. Nobody I have heard can match his raw edge.

Very cool. I thinks it's a little above "E" is because it may be sped up a little? Awesome stuff! Pure Van Halen magic indeed!

This happens with bootlegs a lot as they get passed around and transfered from sourc to source.
GlenGamble 2 years ago
I dont think it's the tuning-it sounds like the source (probably some source of tape) is playing a tad too fast-sped up.
GlenGamble 2 years ago
actually on the record there is a few songs that are fast and tunded up
frankenstrat25 2 years ago
well they recorder on tape then and the tape probably got sped up, and when you speed up tape it get a higher pitch

it is really strange that someone with such extraordinary mental and physical discipline could become an alcoholic.

YES ... well put dude, agree totally.
EVH should be mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix , Miles Davis, John Coltrane etc. He redefined a genre.
Still unsurpassed , a raw natural ability & deft touch , coupled with amazing song writing rarely found in todays's shredders.
I've been to 2 Paul Gilbert clinics in the last 2 years & the guy would not shut up about how much he loves Eddie
Van Halen ,like Led Zeppelin before them spawned many imitators & pretenders - but none could touch them!
Tharg 3 years ago
I agree.
...as great of a lead guitarist, he is probably a better rhythm guitarist.

Eds solo still sounds very cool but it seemed a little too rushed. The album version had more feeling

@lisannhodges67 ...def'nly better slower. But I like these lyrics = ly !!
