I'd say it's generally a bad idea to go for whites unless you have an immediete strategy for getting rid of them (like, say, an empty column). I have often been stuck in bad situations without any paint because of whites. Full row of whites = DO NOT WANT.

Yeah I tend to avoid the whites when I can, but when I play as the Vegas character, I hit them a lot in hopes of shuffling and getting some of them to disappear.

Funnily enough, the Vegas character is all about luck. I've had absolutely amazing rounds by just hitting everything and shuffling once in a while. And then I've also had completely crap rounds doing the same thing.
