dr z how are you doing hope you are doig great thanks because you answer all questions to everybody i have a quuestion for you can you tell me why if it is three phase system the contactor that you replace it where it goes? to the condensing fan or what is that contactor for it has only two phases thanks dr Z
and if you're getting line voltage, then what? the part that is not clear to me, or where i lack practice is isolating electrical issues past line voltage. where do you go after line voltage? i know it all depends on what the issue is, but i was just trying to get an idea... thanks again for your willingness to share your knowledge with the world. you are sure clearing things up for a knucklehead like me. i guess i am just having to learn the hard way, as usual.
what are the steps you follow when first arriving at a service call for, say, a package unit? great videos by the way. thanks for posting this stuff. as i mentioned before, i have focused mainly on install over the years but now have been presented with a job opportunity which entails a lot more trouble-shooting. i have already benefited immensely from your vids. they are helping me prepare for this new job!! thanks
@elena04able I always first look at the thermostat to be sure that it's calling for cooling or heating. Then I make sure that the system is getting line voltage.
I went to hvac school for 9 months and believe I got more out of your videos this morning and afternnon than I did in that whole nine months...Thanks man! very cool that you are sharing your straight forward knowledge with folks...again thank you
Will I get total different reading with a true RMS meter and a non true RMS meter? Are the differences high enough to reconsider upgrading to a true RMS meter? I need to buy one but I don't know which one to buy, I won't be working on VF motors.
A true RMS meter will give you a truer real time reading. It could be important when troubleshooting systems with line voltage balance problems. And to say that you won't be working on VF motors is seriously restricting your capabilities as most newer air handlers are coming with VF motors.
Good video! I like the way you apply the basics to on-site issues then call out components like the Phase Monitor (which is new to me), and something I immediately Google to learn all the more!
Is there a Delta leg at that location? We always made sure the control transformer wasn't hooked to that leg.
yrtuag 7 months ago
@yrtuag There isn't a high leg in this case.

@theASEtech The condensing fan motor is single phase and the compressor is three phase.

@elena04able You can check the control componets next. That's where the hands on practise is necessary.

What VF motor mean DrZ?
jogacha17 2 years ago
VF means Variable Frequency as in Variable Frequency Drive. They control fan motor speeds.

If you want to replace a contactor, how do you determine which contactor to get for your system?
barlog20 2 years ago
The easy way is to bring in the old contactor to the HVAC supply store and get help from someone there.
Once you understand that definite purpose contactors can be sorted by certain characteristics then it's easy to know what you need.
Just make sure that the number of poles, the amp rating and the coil voltage is correct and you'll have no problem.

yes you right i dont know what i was thinking

Barlog made a good point. C'mon Doc...get your digital thermometer and show the subcooling and superheating on some liquid and suction lines!
GoldRushDutch 3 years ago
Why not do a vid on measuring superheat and subcooling?

dr Z I really need help with reading ladder diagrams is there anything you can suggest that will help make them better

Hey DR.Z love your videos very imformative.
Is there any way you can show the chillers at the school board and how they operate?

I'll try to do a video about that after the Holidays. Thanks.

Phase monitors can save three phase equipment from single phasing.

i notes all eletric furnaces and heat pump air preheater/emer heat use only the nichcrome wire coil kind elements the only time i seen sleath kind
elements same kind on the stove top in hvac is for the r.v and camper heating and cooling units and thay mostly have fins on thim
hdyudu 3 years ago
Sorry. I don't work on camper type of a/c systems.
DrZarkloff 3 years ago
oh yes most techs don't you would have to a repare shop but i just mainly put camper unit down just to show in comments to explane
