Regardless of the quality of food, supposed health benefits and so on, industrial agriculture is not without its faults. I think the motive behind organic food is good for the earth, so it's kind of like a voluntary environmental regulation. It's a free market... If I want to "vote with my wallet" and say that sustainable farming is important to me, then I can only hope I'm not being lied to.
@werdnativ, from what I personally know, the main motivation behind all this is the first world's primary economic sector's reaction to agricultural overproduction. They desperately needed a way to reduce production quantities and at the same time push prices up - don't forget farmers need to make a living, too.
@Tsicar, it's in the description, I chose Minecraft because (besides that it is a good game) Minecraft may be the closest thing many urban kids may actually now about agriculture.
Ever seen that test Penn and Teller did on their show? Taste test between organic and non organic banana except both pieces were actually from the same banana.
There's a very good reason why the scientific process is all about eliminating bias.
when my granpa was alive he used to grow a lot of veggies in our garden and we had our own chickens... i can assure that the taste of the eggs, the meat and the veggies was pretty different from what i find in the supermarket. Pity is that i don't find the same delicious and different taste in the organic stuff... maybe it's the love for the person who grew the veggies that makes them taste better?
I know an organic farmer personally and I buy vegetables directly from him.
Prior to the summer of 2009 there was no regulatory process in Canada to keep this word from being used on everything. Now there are some legally recognized groups that certify products. But unfortunately I believe one of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency authorized Certification Bodies in Italy was involved in the incident you mentioned. :(

And with that organic food thing, they found it.
Organic food is a really interesting topic.
