so english here all, i'm not so good in speeking english: Julie Andrews hatte eine sehr schöne Stimnme und hat Sinn für Humor (Julie Andrews had a wonderful voice and is a good actress)
I love this film, there's Julie tap dancing and singing and being TOTALLY brilliant then we have Mrs Meers... ''Pook.. Shoo shoow..' *she made me and my mother roar with laughter ...
MTM, as the quinticential gorgeous 'Lil Miss Sunshine'... Carol Channing as Muzzy, flying about the place saying .. 'RASBERRIES..'
Oh happy me, I think I shall have to watch it again... Hee hee ... :0)x
I have never heard of this musical, but we are doing it for our school musical so I thought I would take a look. But then I saw Julie Andrews and I knew that this had to be good :D
I know a lot of you are fascinated by the 20s fashion and abhor the "skank" dress that goes on today with girls and "thug" look of guys but if we start bashing on today's dress then we're completely missing the point of Millie's song:
"There are those, i suppose, think we're mad, heaven knows
The world has gone to wrack and to ruin.
What we think is chic, unique, and quite adorable
They think is odd & sodom and gomorrahable
--but the fact is, everything to-day is thoroughly modern."
i really do adore the fashions of that era and personally think that girls look much prettier in those getups than the ass-lenght shorts and skirts they have today. but that's just me.
Although her voice is the main reason why she become a star, Julie Andrews would also be great in silent movies. I adore her facial expressions in this wonderful film about the 20's. Gotta love her.
Wow this just show how western culture is doomed. And don't try to contradict me-LOOK AT THE MESS WE ARE IN NOW ALL BECAUSE HOUSES WERE OVERVALUED BY 60% OF THE POPULATION WHO TOLD THE REST OF THE 40% TO READ "SECRET" WRITTEN BY A WOMAN WHO SAID THAT THE TSUNAMI WAS ATTRACTED BY THOSE IN INDONESIA.
the extra with straw hat and poka dot band passed her about four times.... keeps wanting another look huh? It's now been as long since the movie was made as it depicts 1922 from the mid 60's...and change? hmmm
She was 32 years old when she filmed this movie. So, since it's located in 1922, she should have been born in 1890! But actually the history talks about a 25 year-old girl from the countryside, so her date of birth would be around 1896 or 1897.
@actorjdwilliams Definitely, but what mean is, the 1920s dresses the costume designer selected are somewhat similar to the dresses of the 1960s. Film makers pick and choose what they want to use when constructing a version of the past. Another good example for this could be found in the costume of the 1930s and '40s. When you watch old films from the period, many of the women wear dresses with veils, puffed sleeves, etc. In modern films set in the same period, however, they usually don't.
You should not say that, Julie will live for ever in her legacy. All my favorite artists are from the 1920s, so they are all dead now. They live in our hearts.
You do realize the irony in that statement right? The whole point of this song is that people think that the world is going to hell because women are dressing like skanks, but it's really just a new era of modernity. Everything is relative.
Is it just me or does anyone else think the melody of this song sounds a lot like the 1920s college tune "Doin' the Raccoon"? If you're not familiar with it, you can find it on here.
@Acoontey I realize this is a bit late but, what happened is, her bra got untangled or snapped so her chest wasn't held back anymore. The guy noticed this and stared at her chest for a split second and looked back up at her. What happened afterwards was a rather... awkward silence :P
@DrHasslein "Julie Andrews is a fucking monster!" Just curious but what makes you say that? I don't think Andrews has ever done anything to deserve such disrespect.
i think it was meant in an approving way (like saying that someone is a deadly beauty or a knockout. and the amount of talent stacked onto one woman is simply SCARY and her stardom so bright. i really do think that was the intention, just an unconventional style for a julie lover, but quite common as a show of enthusiasm in others.
our school is doing this for a drama production. Can't wait, but does anybody know where I can find youtube scenes with Jimmy Smith in it. I want to get into character a bit
I wish Julie had kept her strawberry blonde hair from "The Sound of Music" but I suppose that once that movie was done, she'd want to go back to her natural hair color. It just made her so much more unique. Oh well, i still love her and think she's amazing as ever!
4:03 was funny, millie's like "oh crap! what just happened?!"
I really enjoy this movie, this is definitely the best plaay were doing at our school. I enjoy the dances here. I find jimmy a bit too.... wrong. Mrs. Meers was awesome!
Still one of my favourite movies nearly 40 years after having first seen it. I was helpless with laughter the first time I saw them dancing in the elevator to make it go up and down.
@elphabastwin yay! its great that more young people love this too! i saw the musical at my sisters highschool and fell in love with it! theres different songs in the movie version but its still great anyhow! :D

If ever a film title song and credit sequence begged for a snappy dance number, this is it. The song is great, the "idea" of the sequence is so good and Andrews is terrific but they kind of wasted such a good song.

Oh and I love Muzzy too... "Raspberries"... LOL :0)x
What amazes me is how much women's fashion changed from 1912 to 1922 (when this movie is set). If you compare the styles of TITANIC and THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, you can see a drastic change. In just 10 years women's hemlines rose from the ankles to the knees (after having them long for centuries) and they bobbed their hair, which before 1920 was unheard of. Before, women kept it long and piled it on top of their head. They also did away with the corset.
@musicaltheatergeek79 Hemlines were still quite long in 1922, about four inches above the ankle . The costumes for this movie were about seven years off the mark .They are all from 1927-1928 buts thats hollywood for you, Again Not historically correct.
@sterlinggreg hahaha! Someone pointed that out at a forum I post on recently. They had a thread called "Movies that take place in the past but get the period wrong." One of the most mentioned was FUNNY GIRL. Who knew women in the teens wore '60s bouffants and coon eye makeup. LOL!
@musicaltheatergeek79 So true!!! Funny Girl is one of the worst offenders. Worse still is "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte " They tell you the opening party scene is 1928 and yet all the young party xtras have coon eye make up, Bouffant hair and some have 1960's Flips and HAIRBANDS! Did they really think we would'nt notice?
@musicaltheatergeek79 I think this had a lot to do with WWI and women's lib. Short hair, short skirts and going without corsets was more practical, economical and rebellious.
Big fashion mistake in the song lyrics if "This is 1922" The hemlines were't that short yet. The dresses are all more circa 1927-28. They were lousy at doing historical costume research in 1960's movies, have you noticed you can always tell a 60's period movie because the hair and make up are never correct.
I was watching a little 'fashion' show that my store put on, and I made a comment about 'Gee, I wish my fronts weren't so full. They sure ruin the line of your beads' and then later I mentioned 'And her beads hang straight!' Sadly, only one person got it.
@LadyAryun Have you ever found the original soudtrack recording ? In its liner notes about the making of the film its stated that the 1920s look was back in the 1960s-such as short skirts and short hair. So it was thought that not much real period look had to be found-though the films look is really that of the late 60s,even for the mens look.
@newrochellephoenix Actually, my Mother bought it YEARS ago on record because she loved it so much! (We also ask for Roses on 'the fat side') If I remember correctly, Amazon had a copy in the US site for about $12. You just have to ask for the 1967 movie soundtrack. I will say I was sad with the lack of inserts and extras for the DVD, but hey! I've got it on DVD! It could've just been not there! Hope it helps!
@mkervelegan In the North East and on the West Coast, in the 1920's, there were few black people. The two Great Migrations which would bring them there from the South would occur in 15 or so years. In addition, cities then were the high society centers of life, remember, this is before white flight. On the main avenues and streets one would have a hard time finding a black person. Unbelievable or not, it is true.
Just saw this on TV last night on TCM. I'd forgotten how fun it is. TCM said it was the first time they had shown it on TV. Does anyone know if it's the first time EVER on TV? I'd love to see it again, but imdb shows a blank page for tv schedule.
I know it has been on tv at least twice. The last time that I know of; it was on American Movie Classics.
TCM has schedules for the current months and the next two months so you can simply type in the name of the movie and on its page to the side will give the listings of when the movie will air in the period of time.
i love how style was so diffrent back then, when it was atractive to have small breast how ever it was conciderd a scandel to show your legs, I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND JULIE ANDREWS!!!!!!!!!!
Love these clothes so much!!! Even though the silhouette is very 20's flapper, the bold, crisp colors are SOoOOo deliciously 60's mod, and give away when this movie was made. Such a delicious marriage! I'd buy every piece, but I'm WAY too gifted in the tits and hips, I think I'll stick to 40's and 50's...
love those flappers.truly great film should be seen on the big screen

@bobbobato
Actually these are late 1920's dresses, look in Google Images for 1927 to 1929 fashion.
actorjdwilliams 10 months ago
@actorjdwilliams Definitely, but what mean is, the 1920s dresses the costume designer selected are somewhat similar to the dresses of the 1960s. bobbobato 9 months ago
@bobbobato
Oh! That's unavoidable. I also think that 80% of the dresses of this movie are 20's;
but there is still a high influence of 60's fashion on this production. Also, I would
like to add, that a 1920s movie should have more Victorian style costumes! For
example, longer dresses, Chaplin's like suits, etc. Only the rebel girls from the 20's
wore flapper "modern" dresses and bob hair.

They also did away with the corset.
musicaltheatergeek79 1 year ago
@musicaltheatergeek79 Hemlines were still quite long in 1922, about four inches above the ankle . The costumes for this movie were about seven years off the mark .They are all from 1927-1928 buts thats hollywood for you, Again Not historically correct.
sterlinggreg 1 year ago
@sterlinggreg hahaha! Someone pointed that out at a forum I post on recently. They had a thread called "Movies that take place in the past but get the period wrong." One of the most mentioned was FUNNY GIRL. Who knew women in the teens wore '60s bouffants and coon eye makeup. LOL!
musicaltheatergeek79 1 year ago
@musicaltheatergeek79 So true!!! Funny Girl is one of the worst offenders. Worse still is "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte " They tell you the opening party scene is 1928 and yet all the young party xtras have coon eye make up, Bouffant hair and some have 1960's Flips and HAIRBANDS! Did they really think we would'nt notice?
sterlinggreg 1 year ago
@musicaltheatergeek79 I think this had a lot to do with WWI and women's lib. Short hair, short skirts and going without corsets was more practical, economical and rebellious.

"Men say it's criminal what women all do, what there are forgeting is this is 1922"
LOVE this film, LOVE Julie, LOVE the entire cast, and, of couse, the music, songs, art direction and humour...
More films like this one, please!!

Big fashion mistake in the song lyrics if "This is 1922" The hemlines were't that short yet. The dresses are all more circa 1927-28. They were lousy at doing historical costume research in 1960's movies, have you noticed you can always tell a 60's period movie because the hair and make up are never correct.
sterlinggreg 1 year ago
@sterlinggreg well, "this is 1927-28" didn't rhyme so....

@sterlinggreg Whats funny too is that I think the flapper look lasted for only a short time.

I was watching a little 'fashion' show that my store put on, and I made a comment about 'Gee, I wish my fronts weren't so full. They sure ruin the line of your beads' and then later I mentioned 'And her beads hang straight!' Sadly, only one person got it.

@LadyAryun Dontcah hate it when you can quote great lines from great stories and not many people have any idea what youre talking about ?
newrochellephoenix 1 year ago
@newrochellephoenix Oh I really hate it, but then again, it gives me the reason to let them borrow the DVD and get them educated! ^_^
LadyAryun 1 year ago
@LadyAryun Have you ever found the original soudtrack recording ? In its liner notes about the making of the film its stated that the 1920s look was back in the 1960s-such as short skirts and short hair. So it was thought that not much real period look had to be found-though the films look is really that of the late 60s,even for the mens look.
newrochellephoenix 1 year ago
@newrochellephoenix Actually, my Mother bought it YEARS ago on record because she loved it so much! (We also ask for Roses on 'the fat side') If I remember correctly, Amazon had a copy in the US site for about $12. You just have to ask for the 1967 movie soundtrack. I will say I was sad with the lack of inserts and extras for the DVD, but hey! I've got it on DVD! It could've just been not there! Hope it helps!

notice the complete absence of pedestrians of colour...they certainly inhabited urban areas in 1920s America
mkervelegan 1 year ago 2
@mkervelegan In the North East and on the West Coast, in the 1920's, there were few black people. The two Great Migrations which would bring them there from the South would occur in 15 or so years. In addition, cities then were the high society centers of life, remember, this is before white flight. On the main avenues and streets one would have a hard time finding a black person. Unbelievable or not, it is true.

Just saw this on TV last night on TCM. I'd forgotten how fun it is. TCM said it was the first time they had shown it on TV. Does anyone know if it's the first time EVER on TV? I'd love to see it again, but imdb shows a blank page for tv schedule.

me too, i have to learn the lyrics cuz the only thing i know is "thoroughly modern millie now"
gabrieljlivingston 1 year ago
I know it has been on tv at least twice. The last time that I know of; it was on American Movie Classics.
TCM has schedules for the current months and the next two months so you can simply type in the name of the movie and on its page to the side will give the listings of when the movie will air in the period of time.

@Durbelethwen, thank you. The TCM page doesn't have it scheduled, but nice to know I can check there, and that it might be on AMC too.
