@KhanTutorials if you have a plain old PCI one, yep. i'd highly recommend getting a board with pci-e x16 on it though so you can put a better card in if you're going to use one at all.
@739199 that was fixed with kernel patches. the data drives are all ext3, the boot drive is ext4. if the boot drive has issues, it's not gonna be more then an annoyance.
You used 32 bit? Why not 64bit... it's a D525 board... You can't utilize all 4GB of your ram. Incase you didnt know make sure to put discard on your fstab for your ssd to enable trim. Anyway nice video other then 32 bit =]
@joshruehlig you've clearly never heard of the PAE kernel. 36-bit kernel that addresses that ram. i've been using 64-bit anyway. this setup has changed quite a bit. that SSD doesn't support TRIM. it's old, lol. that's in my main computer now. the boot drive in the server is a 250GB IDE hard drive now.
@lmull3 I have heard of PAE, didn't notice you were using it =P
Man, I'd think that SSD would support trim since it looks like a newer kingston, hopefully it doesn't lose too much performance over time, ( Either way it should be better then a HDD though).
@OryNider this is why you buy a board with the features you need already on it if you can. for that purpose, i didn't need expansion. the only thing i'd end up using the PCI slot for eventually is probably a raid card to add more then 4 hard drives.
How did you get on with CPU temps after replacing the thermal paste? I have gone from 37-38C up to a constant 40-42C (possibly higher, I've only used the system for half an hour or so after replacing).
Did you apply just to the CPU or the heatsink, too?
debian is fine for a server, also is sl/centos (the new version that's coming out soon should have a decent kernel for these boards). personally, for my home server i use freebsd, which has never failed for me, and even more stable than linux.
but i'd never use ubuntu for a server. maybe the 10.04 lts. maybe..
looks like it has plenty of room for airflow too thanks to a big case and mini motherboard. makes me wish I was at a point in things to build one myself.
I have all the parts for a server pc but I don't have a motherboard :(

Why use EXT4 when it's known for corruption? Or was that Ubuntu specific?

I'd go with LXDE if I wanted a desktop environment on a server. It's even more minimal than xfce is.

How much noise does this mini CPU fan make? I'd like to buy the board because it has 4xSATA, but I want a quiet NAS PC.
alexellis2 11 months ago
@alexellis2 my power supply is louder then that little fan, lol

@Elit3M1ke i'll probably have to do a screencast in order to really do that properly.

also, i recommend putting 'local' or something like that in the domain name. some programs complain about it. ;)
