WOW! Love this one too! This is the best Ive seen Guilford/Pan Am run!!! They are usually coasting along on notch 3 at 10MPH ..YAWN!! This is the first time ive seen them run on run 8 with balls out like a real train... Heavy Metal! good video! Reminds me of my days on dirty tunnel motors grinding up tehachapi at 17 MPH and 40,000 horsepower!
What you're hearing is a mix of 12- and 16-cylinder power.
In the case of this train, the GP35's sound very much like GP40's. However, the GP39-2's have a different engine sound altogether (the lower-pitched "droning" sound heard through most of the video) because they have 12 cylinders rather than 16.
All of these turbocharged units have a deeper, more muffled sound than the "chugging" of a GP38.
I love the sound of EMD engines working up a grade. It was nice to see the 350 lettered for the Boston & Maine. I can remember it running past my house many a times. It is now bearing the Guilford Rail System name and MEC reporting marks under the cab windows.
I've railfanned here many times. in the exact location. GRS never seems to put enough power on their trains. I love the cloud of dust from the sanders... and the sound of those working 645s!
The clip "SP fallen flags works hard up Cajon Pass etc" is probably the best audio clip of EMD's on youtube, but this runs a close second

Look at the dust the traction motor blowers is kicking up! Guilford is trash, a rich man's (Timmy Mellon) toy.

If you mean what looks like smoke coming out from under the engine thats probably dust from the sanders.

a GP39-2 on each end and 2 GP35's in the middle.

I can't figure it out. Is this a mix of 38's and 40's cause a couple look like 38's in the begining but I cleary hear a 645 on the last one.

EMD two-cycle power at notch 8, nothing finer in railroading/railfanning!

They bought them from the NS

Did the Guilford acquire most of it's high hood Geeps from the NW or the Southern?
NSHorseheadSD70 3 years ago
Their High-Nosed GP35s and SD45s were ex N&W units.

The U30C on Gilford was orginally owned by Detroit Edision where it was used on Unit coal trains.

Sounds like they need a tune up

I wonder how often they have to replace traction motors running them like that.
xxch4osxx 4 years ago
I know it seems like running that slow pushing all that amperage through the traction motors has gotta be rough on them.
