  • my fathers truck does that cuz the turbo dont work sometimes. Shes just startin to run bad and its got around 200,000 on it. It had cracked heads when he got it and it had like 175,000 then.

  • I love the old 6.5s. I had one for a while. Now I have a 7.3. Both were straitpiped, But the 6.5 makes such a better noise!

  • my buddy has a suburban with a 6.5 and it's all stock and blows more than the video. it's actually his wastegate that has gone bad that makes it smoke so much

  • If your not running any gauges I wouldnt be runnin her that hard with that much weight behind her at over 200k.....

High EGTs will melt any motor nomatter how solid built they are!!!!!

Clean truck tho, straight pipe sounds great wish I could legally get away with that here but atleast I dont have smog :)

  • Thats a stock 6.5

  • help anybody, i have a 98 6.5l turbo im tryin to save some money instead to taking it to the chevy dealer and rippin me off. and and id like some peoples advice. im having a service engine light which is a PO236-TURBOCHARGER BOOST SENSOR A CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE. and i read some forms online and i replaced the wastegate solenoid. so far it didnt work. so what are my next options? i poped the hose off the wastegate actuator when the truck was idleing and im getting no suction? bad vacuum mabe?

  • @washkin

I am not 100% sure about this, Im very new to the 6.5s but I would check the resistor? I had the same problem on my old work truck and we swapped in a #9 resistor and it got rid of code and ran a few more psi and added about 35whp or so :)

Like I said tho Im no expert on these motors yet, but I would give that a check good luck!

  • @GreaseMonkeyVIPfixed it, had to replace the vacuum pump which went out. i cleard the codes with a code scanner. and hasnt come on ever since driving it. i can tell you its kinda pain in the ass to change it. thanks though. whats a resistor for a truck? is it a fuse?

  • BEASTLY!!!!!!!!!! I LIKE IT

  • my straight pipe lincoln town car almost smokes like that on acceleration except the smoke is blue lol...uh oh?

  • its smoking like that because u have a load on it !!!

  • I never knew that excessive smoke from a diesel engine was cool until I discovered YouTube. I always prided myself on having a well tuned engine that didn't smoke at all, maybe a wisp of white smoke right at startup. Of course, my engine started when it was supposed to, didn't even think about plugging it in unless it was close to 0 F, got wonderful mpg, in fact the engine outlasted the truck, which rusted out underneath. I pulled the engine and looking for a Suburban to stick it in.

  • @mahatma171 haha! all black smoke means is that your truck has big nuts

  • @classiccube

Black smoke or COAL as people call it is just unburnt fuel.....

If you have a truck that is fast as hell and "doesnt" smoke thats MAD props!!!! Your actually using the fuel to make power not just look kool lol

Check out banks trucks, everyone bags on them cuz they dont smoke, yet one runs the quarter fast as hell w/o smoke and another goes over 200mph w/o any smoke either.... and the 200mph truck they also use to tow with!!!!! Now thats what a true performance diesel is !!!!!

  • our 94 6.5L turbo 2wd half ton truck smokes more then that, but it's also got 350 000km's of hard farm abuse on the engine, i've never seen a truck doing a burnout moving about 50km's an hour with the tires spinning at 140km's an hour going up a slight hill on the interstate in georga pulling a header.... 2wd half ton long box with a diesel and 5 speed....bad idea

  • and the video i just posted is pretty much what the 6.5 diesels are worth, and

  • Comment removed

  • what do you mean by the "fuel return" line? i have a 94 c2500 with the 6.5 and have been tryin to get it to blow black smoke

  • cummins is by far the best those 12valves you can crank up so easy and free and they run like a bad outta hell!!! you can easy get 100hp with just messin with the pump and screw! WATCH them EGTs son lol

  • ur right cummins is the way to go and hell yeah you can get at least a 100 hp out a 12vavle just by messing with pump it fun shit

  • does anyone know how these motors are? i can see there not intercooled but how is the power on them and dependable? these are like the cheapest diesels for sale

  • i think he's got a sticky egr valve

  • are a very good idea for people who can't afford a cummins or newer diesel, but the cummins in my opinion is the best off all the diesels, you dont wanna get me started on them. the 6.5's don't have the power or torque of the newer diesels but they are a smat pick for the poor man because they are cheaper to buy an to fix if you know where to get your parts, my dad has one an he got a rebuilt injector pump for $450 not sure where from though, but they are good trucks, i'm tryin to get one myself

  • these engines are very good, they have some minor problems that would cause ignorant people to call them junk, but they are by no means junk, an chances are you see alot an don't know it cause most dont have that heavy duty look to them they just look like a regular 1/2 ton truck, unless you know to look for the holes in the front bumper or the pipe they are pretty much the same as a 1/2 ton look wise, an they even had the 6.5 in a 1/2 ton. but they are cheap to buy an you can make em smoke they

  • Most of the time, smoke like that comes from one of two sources........ No boost, or a performance chip......

  • my suburban does that i think its a bad injector dumping way to much fuel and the unburnt gas is being thrown out the exhaust

  • My 97 1500 6.5l blows black nice and thick when I am hard on the petal I LOVE It!

  • Next time try taking the plastic off the air filter before you install it and maybe it won't smoke this much.

  • you better get ur eyes checked cuz i see them all the time. Maybe you live in a small town or something like that but i PHX AZ i see them all the time. great work trucks

  • no thats pretty much normal on any 6.5 chevy with a load on it ive had 3 and they all do the same thing low boost and really high compression and too much fuel on them dam things good trucks though kinda miss mine

  • maybe the previous owner turned up the pump?

is it faster than most 6.5 diesels?

if its slower u may not be getting full boost or airfilter may need replacing or injector/s.

  • are 1995 6.5L dually does the same we dont know why either in fact ares is worse you can try to keep it in the powerband all you want but if you have a heavy load on and you need to go up a big hill thats all its going to do is smoke it looks like are truck is on fire with all the smoke it makes hauling 10 cows

  • i kind of miss the ol' 6.5 diesels

  • Be careful operating the engine like that. Black smoke means that your exhaust gas temperatures are going to be very high and putting your pistons at risk.

  • Lol.. The black smoke is a sign that it's running rich, or cold. Do some research..

  • any smoke is burning excess fuel than is needed. you get SUPER shitty gas milage when you blow smoke alot

  • Please explain to me how smoke can burn excess fuel. I don't even understand why you attempted to explain that to me, 80K25 is the clueless one. This stuff is months old anyway.

  • i heard that form numerous buddies that had dealt with diesels in the past. one of which is a BIG RIG MECHANIC!! and works on those huge construction combines and backhoes. the black smoke is unburnt diesel. gotta keep it in the powerband, as ive heard before

  • Yeah, the smoke is partially burnt fuel, but I hope you know you said that "smoke is burning excess fuel".

  • close enough. it still makes you get worse gas mileage and wastes fuel. but if you want to go faster and dont mind getting more diesel sooner then go for it.

  • I wouldn't go for it. Matter of fact I've never said I like smokey diesels or that, that is efficient. If I even owned a Duramax I'd do what Banks does, run smaller injectors and pump it full of propane. I'd be embarassed to pick up my girlfriend with something that smokes to be quite honest.

  • thats why you learn to keep it in the powerband. and check out the side mirror and see if ur blowing smoke. thats what i do. but if ur gonna do anything that needs more HP then go ahead and floor it and blow all the smoke u want.

  • It's not a matter of keeping it in the powerband, sometimes even stock injectors are too big for the compression of a certain engine, or the fuel pressure is too high.

  • still i drive my 97 6.5 3/4 ton without making it smoke at all. even when i get on the highway going 70. It is just a matter of giving it just enough gas to get up instead or flooring it. all diesels smoke, its just how they are. look at semis and city buses. Ive been driving my diesel for 6 months and ive got it mastered. it will only smoke when i want it to. just like learning a clutch. you have to know how much to give it to make it work.

  • Not all diesels smoke. Check out some of Bank's trucks. Or Volkswagen TDI's.

  • it will if you floor it. just not as bad as older ones

  • Seriously man, check out the Banks Sidewinder or some of their other drag trucks. No smoke.

  • Banks performance accessories goal is to make a high power engine with little or no smoke at all

which he has achieved that goal very well :D

  • I'm quite aware.

  • @kcole939 I know this is a year later -- But dude, you clearly don't know the first thing about diesel engines! Hearing you call me (a journeyman diesel mechanic, by the way) clueless was just too funny to pass up! Your comment of a rich running diesel threw any credibility you might have had clear out the window. Diesel engines are always running as lean as possible, you can not make a diesel engine run rich, as it absolutely always has excess air, due to no air intake restriction.

  • @80K25 Drop it man, you were incorrect nearly two years ago, contradicted yourself, and still incorrect to this day.

Here is a quote from your own comment.

"Black smoke is caused by one thing, and only one thing -- Over fueling"

WHAT DO YOU THINK RUNNING RICH IS? A low air to fuel ratio! I.e. more parts fuel than more parts air, compared to a higher air to fuel ratio! Christ. Journeyman diesel mechanic? What'd you learn from? "How to become a diesel mechanic for dummies"?

  • I know this is 7 months late -- But clearly you know nothing about diesel engines less what you've read on Youtube.

Black smoke is caused by one thing, and only one thing -- Over fueling. If you are over fueling your engine, you are going to produce high EGTs (common knowledge, look it up) and risk melting the pistons in the engine, or burning valves. A 6.5L has ceramic coated pistons which allows it to handle the exhaust temps better than a 6.2L, but not enough for constant black smoke.

  • Are you slightly dumb, making a mistake, or just completely retarded? You're attempting to seem like Mr. high and mighty now, when you're re-stating what I said.

"The black smoke is a sign that it's running rich"

You imbecile. I stated something that is correct, you were also half way correct. Black smoke does not ALWAYS mean there are high EGT's.

Christ, study up before you reply to nearly year old comments. Or at least learn to read for that matter.

  • i have to agree w/ cole u are fucking dumb, it exessive fuel and its also being scouched wich in term the Black Smoke, so basicly u are just throwing ur money away, just shooting dollars out the tail pipe, yeah the black smoke is cool but it just wasting money

  • man I sure do preciate all the info thats awful nice of ya to relay the advice

  • man I am having the same problem on mind and someone mentioned to me that the waste gate might be getting hung open, dont know for sure but you might wanna check into it cause my fuel milage has dropped drastically because of it

  • No prob, i went with a K&N system on my pickup and that made a huge difference also about every other tank i pour in some lucas fuel treatment sure seems to me it helps keeping the injectors clean

  • i have a 6.5 in fact i always had diesels, i'm around alot of dust and so forth but when they get to pushing alot of black, the air filter is getting clogged up, it looks like you have the fuel pressure at the injector just not enough air

  • I know. I haven't replaced the air filter in awhile and it's pretty nasty. I plan on getting a whole new high-flow air intake for it to go with the open exhaust. Thanks!

  • yep thats normal :)

  • Injectors for the 6.5s dont add shit. The 40 Horsepower claims is just that claims.

I would stick with the stock injectors.

    Go to

    heathdieselDOTcom

    That guy knows his stuff.

  • I think the turbo isnt working. its a common problem. You may have a faulty vacuum pump, cracked or leaking vacuum line or wastegate actuator, or bad wastegate solenoid.

  • your injectors are 100k overdue for a change. When they wear they leak fuel when the truck sits, and the fuel washes away the oil and you score the cylinder wall. Black smoke is somewhat normal upon acceleration, check your lift pump pressure as your pump could be cavitating.

  • I had a feeling that may be the problem. It has been smoking alot more upon startup than before. Thank you for the info. I'll be changing them out for the 40hp marine injectors asap.

  • What r symptoms of cavitating pump?

my lift pump is built into pump, it controls advance andeffects main injection by returning main pressure pistons to BDC in pump.

It missfires at idle, like an air leak but I have no air leak, it wont rev either.

I have ordered new lift pump rotors etc.

    What say u?

its a lucas pump - shit!

  • The lift pump is an electric pump. It is located under the truck on the frame, under the driver's seat. They are cheap and easy to change. If you suspect that it is not running, go ahead and replace it. There is also a OPS or Oil Pressure Sensor. This part fails often on GM trucks. It's designed to shut off the lift pump if there is no oil pressure (like in an accident)so your Injector pump will have to do all the sucking if this fails. These are cheap too, but more of a challenge to replace.

  • how did you get it to smoke like that?

  • i honestly dont know. It's stock with about 230k on it. It may have something to do with having the original injectors in it still. It doesnt always smoke that much. Mainly when its under load.

  • What year make model of truck?

  • '95 Chevy Cheyenne 2500

  • Check your lift pump on the frame. Start the truck, open the tee on the front of the engine (water drain) fuel should shoot out. If truck stalls then it's not working. You have a stanadyne IP.
