You have missed a few points here. It is revealed in one of the Sonic Advance games that Super forms do NOT need rings aside from gameplay purposes. (Sonic held it for a full week) Shadow required Sonic's help with his four limiters still on to teleport the ARK, but that was his first transformation. Rings are required for flight (Shadow's shoes let him hover) and extreme environments. (Like the Earth's core, inter-dimensions, etc.)
