Its large, bell - shaped flowers have solid stamens the sonic vibrations of which attract species of bats to feed on the nectar and help pollenate the plants. The local Gebusi tribes regard the trees as sacred, the voices of forest spirits. Tribes will also plant them near their encampments to warn of the approach of enemies, although groves of the trees can be nearly deafening in a high wind.
