1) people would still do it, because its part of the aboriginal peoples culture, and some people are just mean and commit crimes

You may think that the way they kill them is inhumane, but it is actually one of the best ways to kill them. A gun shot would not penetrate and kill them in one shot, and so the best fastest most painless way to kill them is a hard blow to the head which knocks them unconscious immediately. It's surprising to see how it is done, it is hard to watch, it looks horrible but it is the best way for the animals sake.

All the non-Canadians commenting I would like you to know that if it was not for this there would be an over abundance of seals. Over many many many years the Inuit and other people of northern Canada have slaughtered the seals in this way for food and warmth. The seals have learned to multiply to overcome this problem. If they were not slaughtered the same way they always have been they would over populate and die slowly from lack of food.

There are bigger things to worry about than seal stealing your land. If their population is too large for the food supply, then let mother nature take her course. @EPVIZZINI Nah, actually, polar bears are finding it harder to kill seals due to glacier withdrawal, which may or may not be linked to increased CO2 emissions (lol yeah thanks US for producing 25% of that!). Therefore, more seals are alive. Therefore, they eat more fish. Fish is a big part of Canada's exports. There are bigger things that must be attended too. Like ending a few wars created by the US. Now, about the whole thing with brutal aerial wolf hunting in Alaska for sport.....

@hove01 i completely agree. but the sad thing is.. we do it here. we do it in so many ways. there are animals being slaughtered just as and worse than these seals are. there are animals skinned alive and left to die. there are dogs and cats that are gassed and worse because shelters cant afford euthanising. besides animals dieing brutal deaths they live aweful lives here in zoos and circuses. its not just canada. if i could id boycott america first.

It is sick! I'm 40 years old and this has been going on as far as I know since I was a little girl. It is sick and it is a complete shame. They kill the baby seals for their white fur!!! They get the most money for the babies but none of it is for meat just pelts. Regular Canadians do not eat seal meat. It is a complete shame on the Canadian Govt but not on all Canadians as most citizens hate this!!!! They SHOULD be punished for this.

My family is from Canada and were ashamed of the gov. and the lack of concern for this hideous massacre. Why it is still going on is a world wide shame. Those defenseless beautiful creatures should be protected. Native populations have existed with and hunted for them for centuries. It occurs to me that many of the people who advocate against the hunt are people who would advocate for the right's of Canada's Inuit people to preserve their cultural heritage and practices.
The seal hunt has formed a sacred part of Inuit culture since time immemorial.
The overpopulation of seals that would result from a ban on the hunt would have seriously negative impacts in the Arctic. The hunt is heavily regulated and sustainable.
Sloganeering and shock tactics tell us none of this.
