Our "imperialism" has done far more then any other to modernize these small indigenous island nations. There's only real independent nation-state left in the south pacific, and they're a monarchy. the Hawaiian islands finally united in the 1800s, and then we moved in and conquered them. I lived on maui for a year and a half and had to put up with a bunch of ignorant fucking natives that intimidated and beat the shit out of us "hales"(whites). And what was my crime? living peacefully.

The history of Hawaii has been erased. Did you know that before we invaded, they had a Parlimentary government similar to the UK? They had a constitution, a flag and a national anthem. Honolulu had electric street lights before some cities in the US. To deprive the native people the right to vote and the right to education made them what they are today. It took a generation or two, but we did eventually destroy them.

I agree to some extent except the people of diego garcia were not indigenous like the polynesians of Hawaii, The British actually brought people to diego garcia (uninhabited) in the early 1900s, mainly from southeast asia, and when the British needed a base, they moved most inhabitants to the maldives, bad, but not as evil as everyone is making it out to be. and really not colonialism, because they didnt have to conquer anyone as there was no one in Diego Garcia.

They could not vote when the decision was made for annexation. THAT IS A VERY IMPORTANT FACT. Then foreign workers were brought into the country to work the sugar fields. Dude, let me explain this to me. I LIVED in hawaii for 2 years. Don't lecture me about something i SAW WITH MY OWN EYES. They brought in japanese, filipinos, and samoans.
